Emily, an incredible Canadian artist with , is putting together an amazing project to be displayed at the Art Vancouver Fair in April and spread awareness for long Covid. She’s looking for people with long Covid, or who’ve recovered from long Covid to participate by sharing a picture of their face, which will be displayed anonymously (without names) on a hospital gown.

If you’re happy to participate or would like to find out more, contact details for Emily, and more information about the project, are provided in the attached link.

JenMc,

@dave

I sent a pic of cooler morning snuggled in bed (when I was glad I didn’t have to get up), hair in two braids (being the only way it has been worn in many months now because it’s manageable that way), no makeup and an attempt at a smile. I debated sending an older, “prettier” pic but decided I wanted to be true to the new me.

I think it’s important to represent both though. The life we’ve lost and the love we’re now living.

JenMc,

@dave

I’m struggling with seeing the new me as anything but someone trapped in a body that continually lets them down.

I’ve had more interaction in about an hour on my toot about my recent experience regarding no masks in health care settings, and , than I have from my friends in a week on two FB posts on my wall about long Covid.

I’ve been absent from mastodon for a while and I’d forgotten how good it feels to be validated (outside of a dedicated long Covid group on FB) and not dismissed for daring to say the C word.

As I type this my support worker is out picking up medical supplies for me as I’m crashing hard after going out for the first time in six months on xmas day somewhere that wasn’t a medical appointment or rental open house (we have to move).

I’m just as sick as I was when I actually had Covid. Congested, coughing, really sore throat, aching all over, weak, no appetite (I’ve tested negative three days straight). All because I spent a few incredibly chilled hours with 3 other people, none of whom were visibly or audibly sick at the time. This is my life now and my nearest and dearest can’t even be bothered to pretend they read a post or an article and hit the like button to show support. So thank you for reminding me that there are people out there who do still care about it and are taking it seriously.

At the clinic and its 100% sounding like a Tuberculosis ward.

Sounds like covid everywhere.

Sad I forgot my sunglasses but cant be perfect I guess.

I am the ONLY asshole masked -- no other patient or staff in sight wearing one.

And I enter the employee doors so I've got a fair sample size.

"In a sea of ignorance, information is a life raft"

JenMc,

@hannu_ikonen I’ve had three appointments at the local hospital and one at a cardiac clinic in the last two months and I’ve seen two other masks, both on other patients waiting in really busy waiting rooms where social distancing isn’t possible.

I’ve moved several times around the waiting room during my wait to the most isolated possible seat and had my support workers practically laugh at me for it but I really don’t care. I already have from my first bout, I don’t need that to get worse from catching Covid again.

This is a victory for democracy.

It was well past time that Black Alabamians had a fair shot at equal representation. The Voting Rights Act is a thing, and Republicans need to stop suppressing the vote.

Now it’s on us to keep fighting for fair maps, ensuring every voice is heard and every vote counts, and showing up to vote.

JenMc,

@TonyStark @Brad_Rosenheim

Finally some real intervention that is supportive of black communities. I’d put on the dancing shoes too but I note the “this is not over” at the end. At least they be fairly represented for at least one election.

Deglassco, to history

Black-American musical expression during enslavement laid the foundation for blues, jazz, country, gospel, rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, & popular music. Emerging from oppression, it reflected resilience & creativity, becoming anthems for civil rights movements the world over. The emotive force and cultural distinctiveness of those early songs endure, nurturing the ongoing struggle for a more just world.

Thank you so much for this thread. Not only was it fabulously educational (especially as an Australian) and the music beautiful and haunting, but it was exactly what I needed to start a morning where I needed distraction from my pain until my meds kicked in.

JenMc,

@Wester_Hare @DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19

The day after the mask mandate ended mask wearing was down by at least 75% here and within a week it was virtually non existent. I now see another person wearing a mask so infrequently that it’s become comment worthy (to whoever I’m with, not the mask wearer). That happens maybe once every six months.

Virtually nobody cares about protecting anyone else now. Someone asking if you could still get free RATs on a pension was derided in the local FB community group not long ago. Many comments along the lines of “why still even bother testing, nobody does that any more”. Requiring a GP referral for a PCR now isn’t encouraging anyone to test either, especially in a town where it can take three weeks to get an appointment with a GP.

Pretty horrifying that the US political system has mutated to the point where the Supreme Court is now the ultimate arbiter of social issues, they don’t give a shit about precedent, public opinion, or anything else, and they’re controlled by the hardest of hard right wing ideologues.

JenMc,

@Green_Footballs @KenWalkerQB

Watching from afar here in Australia it’s pretty scary. As a kid I thought of the US as the pinnacle of what every country should be aiming for (don’t know where I got that concept from as my parents were pretty anti American, as far as Australia adopting anything that originated from the US). Maybe it was the advent of the internet and social media that shone a big spotlight on America for me, but I now pretty much feel sorry for anyone who isn’t a rabid conservative that still lives there. This is especially since Trump. It makes me grateful to have been born Australian, although we are not without our own faults.

JenMc, to Plants

Despite the physical changes and now just wanting to curl up in my bed and cry, I did manage to get my potted up today.

This week’s newbies are:

  • Echeveria Sea Dragon
  • Echeveria Ballerina
  • Echeveria Tolimanensis Hybrid
  • Echeveria Laui x Strictiflora Nova
  • Echeveria Edgy

I also repotted my Echeveria Neon Breakers that was bursting out of her pot with lots of babies. I forgot to get a pic before she went back out under the frost cloth but she looks little in her new pot despite desperately needing the size upgrade.

I went more than a little overboard online plant shopping this week so next week’s post will be a big one!

Echeveria Ballerina has deep, dusty pink leaves with red edges that get lighter towards the centre of the plant. The leaves are frilly and in a loose rosette shape. The photo is on a pale pink background with white polka dots.
Echeveria Tolimanensis hybrid has long, slender leaves with pointed tips that are light blue/green in a rosette shape. The tips have pointy claws on them. The photo is on a pale pink background with white polka dots.
Top: Echeveria Laui x Striciflora Nova has blue/green inner leaves with a pink tone to the outer leaves. The leaves are thick and in a tight rosette formation. There’s a small pup (baby plant) at the base on the right. Bottom: Echeveria Edgy has mid green inner leaves that tend to red on the outside layers. They are rounder at the edges but still come to somewhat if a point at the tips. It’s in a looser rosette formation. The pictures are on a pale pink background with white polka dots.

Random dude that I don’t recall ever having interacted with on FB just messaged me to say “shut up”. Rather than engage I just blocked. It is going to bug me though (for maybe 5 minutes) not knowing what I was supposed to shut up about 🤣

JenMc,

@alexkidman yeah, that would be exhausting. I think I’ll stick with the instant block.

I’d still love to know what I said though cos I don’t remember commenting on anything on FB today, let alone saying anything that would elicit the need to get all up in my DMs to tell me to shut up. Unless he’s one of the misogynistic idiots whose comments I laugh reacted this morning.

Just finished watching Rain Man on Prime and realised that it was probably the first real, vaguely sensitive depiction of an autistic person as an actual person. Not just someone in the background having a meltdown for plot furthering or just pure entertainment purposes.

Could it have been done better? Yes. Has it been done better since? Most definitely yes. Could it still be improved on? I’m sure it could. But I guess I’d never realised before today that when I first watched it all those years ago was probably the first time I’d heard the word “autistic”.

This week’s potted up. It’s been a tough week with the fatigue hitting me particularly hard so they didn’t get potted up until yesterday afternoon despite having all arrived by Thursday.

  • Echeveria Dream Fantasia
  • Echeveria Pagoda
  • Pachyphytum Bubblegum
  • Cotelydon Choco Line
  • Echeveria Purple Delight Variegata (cutting)
  • Echeveria Purple Delight Reverse Variegata (They are a whole lot lighter in person than the sales pictures and may not survive due to lack of colour through which to photosynthesise. Usually you’d leave practically albino ones like this on the mother plant)
  • Echeveria Morning Light

Top: Pachyphytum Bubblegum is a succulent with small, chubby leaves in rosette formation. There are about five tightly spaced heads with leaves ranging in colour from light green to red/orange on the outer leaves. Bottom: Cotelydon Choco Line has a smaller bunch of leaves in various shapes and sizes in no specific formation. The leaves are mid green with brown edges that have a slight ripple to them.
Top: Echeveria Purple Delight Variegata is a rosette shaped plant with pale pink leaves that have a green strip down the centre of each leaf. There are also two single leaves in the pot that has to be removed from the cutting so there was enough stem to plant. Hopefully they’ll produce babies. Bottom: Echeveria Purple Delight Reverse Variegata has two separate stems with each with a head of very, very pale leaves in a rosette shape. One has a hint of pink at the Center and the other is almost completely ivory. While pretty to look at they may not survive due to their lack of colour.
Echeveria Morning Light Top: A side view of two heads that are connected to each other back to back. They have spade shaped leaves in a rosette that range in colour from the centre of bright green, through pale khaki/brown to orange in the outer layer. Bottom: A front view of one of the heads described above.

JenMc,

@podkaynelives

Thank you so much.

I do feel like sometimes that my descriptions could be improved upon (the level of fatigue and brain fog often limits how creatively I can think and write) but it’s nice to know that they’re appreciated.

Hypothetical: you have one quick save slot in real life. At any point, you may save your existence, and can snap back to that moment in time at will. Your memories stay intact. However, you have just ONE slot. So once you quick save, you cannot go back beyond that point.

Are you saying early or are you saving often?

JenMc,

@daniel https://social.tabathawood.com/@T

I’d save back to when my mum was still healthy (before we lost her and then a year later my dad). I miss my best friend and would kill for just one more of her mummy hugs that had the power to make you feel like everything was going to be ok no matter what was happening.

Also, knowing what I do now I know I could be a much better human than I was at that age. Less selfish, more compassionate etc.

Walk up to a friend, and ask them "Can you name this tune in one note" and then fart.

Growing up, my sister used to wait until all the windows on the car were wound up, drop a silent but deadly, and then ask “Can anyone smell petrol?”.

Belated - when I’m well enough I work as a paraplanner doing the background work to make financial advisers look good & writing docs that nobody ever really reads (except compliance, or the adviser editing it). I have so spend way too much time streaming, reading, watching non trashy reality tv, chatting with friends & on social media. I’m also an and a later life realised I enjoy mental stimulation
