Album of the Day 251: Maar by The Evpatoria Report

https://the-evpatoria-report.bandcamp.com/album/maar

2008 post-rock album from Switzerland. There's definitely a bit of space rock or prog here, with long, meandering songs. At times reminds me of Grails, especially the back half of "Mithridate."

My picks: "Eighteen Robins Road," "Mithridate"

Album of the Day 250: Hellfire by black midi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfAOFyhfZJU&list=OLAK5uy_kUzro9EulGZUsIl-Bvn8hnQmPZU0jpSHw&index=1

https://bmblackmidi.bandcamp.com/album/hellfire

2022 experimental rock album from London, England. A crazy experience that takes from prog rock, show tunes, jazz fusion, and more. A hellish nightmare concept album, at times sung, at other times ranted in a blend of carnival barker and auctioneer; often hectic, occasionally soft, frequently discordant.

My picks: "Eat Men Eat," "Welcome to Hell," "Dangerous Liasons"

@matt I'm a fan of To Be Kind, but I've not got around to listening to other albums by Swans.

I've heard of Daughters, but only really know of the band because of the abuse accusations against the lead singer.

@matt It leaves me a bit divided on whether to listen to Daughters.

On the one hand, the rest of the band wasn't involved in any of this, to the best of my knowledge. Is it right to ignore a band based on the actions of one member?

On the other hand... Well, you know. 🫤

LadyMarth01,

@auzzy At first, I had no idea what I was listening to.

Then I wasn't sure I liked it.

I'm pretty sure I love this now.

Album of the Day 249: Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqPC-BkylxA&list=OLAK5uy_nzNqlLAs3PLitt_FR1-_pO-1Vswhe8ff8&index=1

1959 cool jazz album. Notably uses a variety of time signatures, rather than sticking with the tried-and-true 4/4. (Not that there isn't 4/4 on the album.)

My picks: "Blue Rondo à la Turk," "Take Five," "Pick up Sticks"

The last two full albums I listened to both had Roman numerals in the title, and were both numbered "II".

Anyone have other recommendations of albums with "II" in the title?

Album of the Day 248: Harmony in Ultraviolet by Tim Hecker

https://timhecker.bandcamp.com/album/harmony-in-ultraviolet

2006 ambient album. Glitchy and noisy, droning soundscapes with a bit of a shoegaze feel at times.

My picks: "Dungeoneering," "Radio Spiricom," "Whitecaps of White Noise I"

So last year I watched Batman: The Animated Series, Batman '89 and Batman Returns. A friend lent me a copy of Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. I thought all of those were great.

I recently watched the Harley Quinn animated series. The same friend lent me a copy of Superman For All Seasons, Dark Night: A True Batman Story, and Batman: Hush. Then I bought these through a combo of my local hobby shop and Target's buy 2 get 1 free sale.

I might have a problem. 😆

@JTO_is_Typing I remember watching Batman Beyond when I was young, but I don't remember much. I'll probably get around to watching it at some point after watching some other DCAU shows.

...Valve really nails it in general.

The work to make this is impressive enough but the imagination, especially to think of that spontaneous track placement, is genius.

Album of the Day 247: Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfWJqKIxyGc&list=OLAK5uy_n1hZBrulbR80MHTbeDbNGA3Z25cFg7bFc&index=1

1973 prog rock album from England. A nearly fifty minute epic split into two parts, performed almost entirely by Mike Oldfield, and released just ten days after his 20th birthday. Famously, the introduction to part one was used in The Exorcist.

It's all a bit mad, really, an odd adventure that's stylistically varied, at times beautiful and at times oddly funny, but always impressive.

Album of the Day 246: First Band On The Moon by The Cardigans

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEf9DvfKpp0&list=PLI6kLIhBBwmTus5482Q5VTu6AwnpSPBcX&index=1

1996 indie pop/rock album from Jönköping, Sweden. A fairly strong lounge influence and lyrics that darkly contrast the upbeat music make this a pretty interesting album. "Lovefool" is the big hit, and "Step On Me" is also plenty popular, but the album's got plenty of other good ones, including a great Black Sabbath cover.

My picks: "Your New Cuckoo," "Heartbreaker," "Iron Man"

So a couple of weeks ago my local hobby shop started some renovations. Store's still open, but there's no in-store gaming until near the end of May.

Then this morning, the part of the plaza the hobby shop is in caught fire. Thankfully, the store only suffered smoke and water damage, but they're still going to have to shut down for a week or two.

The universe must really not want me playing games there. 😞

NPR did a fascinating dive through a database of historical markers across the US.

That the markers so badly misrepresent history (especially Civil War and Native American history) isn't surprising, of course. But the specific ways and the mechanics of how they work are illuminating.

Note that while the piece doesn't quote the slurs, if you click through to the database itself, it's uncensored. And the piece describes some upsetting events and racist ideas.

Album of the Day 245: The Old City - OST by Atrium Carceri

https://cryochamber.bandcamp.com/album/the-old-city-ost

2015 dark ambient OST from Stockholm, Sweden. The game itself may be a "walking simulator" that's too philosophical for its own good, but the soundtrack is wonderfully moody and atmospheric.

My picks: "Leviathan," "Childhood I," "Dark End"

You can’t say Chrono Trigger.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9K4m7Sb0jU&list=OLAK5uy_likw4ufA4WpeW7hENb6CipE34szdQRdD4&index=1

2017 jazz fusion album from Los Angeles, California. Drums/guitar/organ trio (and some session musicians) with one fantastic name, and some great song titles to match. Pretty funky stuff.

My picks: "Long Live the King," "Don't Eat Your Fingers," "E.T. AF"
