Life is a preposterous horror.

Money speaks for money, the devil for his own
Who comes to speak for the skin and the bone?

The law locks up the man or woman
Who steals the goose off the common
But leaves the greater villain loose
Who steals the common from the goose.

"The IDF did not directly deny accounts of people being stripped of their clothing or held in diapers. Instead, the Israeli military said that the detainees are given back their clothing once the IDF has determined that they pose no security risk."

This is, for sure, the most moral army the in the world, yes sir.

Fantastic there's no power in the West that will turn down the money they make from letting this continue.

"Protopias are achievable. They present a realistic, better tomorrow."

"Murdoch could not find a single YA show or book that portrayed a positive vision of the future, at least not a plausible one that didn't involve superheroes or dragons."

"Really, the last time we dreamed about a better future was Star Trek," she said. "It was 1964."

@CelloMomOnCars Does Ian Banks get no love because it's actual post scarcity utopia and not a half-assed Star Trek version?

Beside the point.

Nobody is writing anything positive because we know that steady upward trajectory we've been having for ever is about to come to a vicious end and nothing we have is sustainable and none of our politicians are up to the task of saving us.

PatrickoftheG,
@PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

@CelloMomOnCars So do Star Trek's replicators?

Edit: Which is not the point.

I like Star Trek, genuinely do, well, at least most of Star Trek I liked. It's just not very utopian or post scarcity, which it doesn't have to be.

@oblomov Probably a lot less special than we think, given they would see these things more than we do more often from a lack of light pollution. Most of Europe is North enough to see these on the regular anyway.

The real question is, imagine showing modern city dwellers a proper night sky.

@oblomov That's fair enough. I know Aristotle spent some time writing on them and the Romans did too, I am just not sure if it was down in Southern Europe or from there knowledge of outside of there.

Just made authentic Southern biscuits for the first time in my life, going so far as to order fancy American flour for the occasion. A little disappointed to discover these are just scones, aren't they? I mean they are good. And my breakfast sausage gravy is divine. I was just hoping for more?

Having a bad experience with some glasses I bought from Zenni... I've bought a few sets of glasses there, often the frames are cheap, but they're also of low quality. Cracks. Finishes or rubber peeling off. Hinges never seem quite right.

I think I'll go back to Costco, it will coordinate with my head-to-toe Kirkland look anyway.

PatrickoftheG,
@PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

@johnefrancis Why not something like Eyebuydirect? I bought the cheapest set I could for something like <$10 to make sure it wasn't going to give my face leprosy or something, and then went and bought something a little bit better afterward.

PatrickoftheG,

PatrickoftheG,

@johnefrancis I can't judge a man for how and where they choose to spend their money. Especially since it's a good reason.

I am not sure I have the amount of disposable income to burn on spending it at a small business optician though, with their markup I feel like they are on the level of criminals. They are the kinda of scoundrel Galen aspires to be with his gouging.

The fun thing about ethnic/religious nationalism is that it's really trivially easy for politicians to turn normal people into racist shit. Easier if you have the media on your side.

It's basically a cheat code to win elections and works everywhere.

There's been news articles here and there about the drop in teen sexual activity in recent years. Now this article comes out, about a sharp decline in sex scenes in movies.

So, is it the chicken or the egg? Are the youth of today influencing the movies, or is it the other way around? :

https://www.theguardian.com/film/article/2024/may/02/hollywood-sex-scenes-decline-by-40-percent

PatrickoftheG,
@PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

@WhippoorwillSong It's a good theory I think, I am not sure I agree though.

My reasoning is that sex scenes in movies are awkward, don't advance plots, and are not even titillating. My guess is movies don't even bother with them because they're not worth it to the actors too.

Especially when compared to the totally free bonanza of absolutely hardcore pornography, catering to every hyper specific kink, that practically beams itself into everyone's phones all the time relentlessly.

Kids today may not understand that there was an age in America where Cracker Jack and sundry breakfast cereals came with toys INSIDE the box of shelf-stable food AND that we were almost universally disappointed at what those toys, which were, for emphasis, inside a box of shelf-stable food, turned out to be because we expected so much more of toys packaged in food.

Do whatever generational psychoanalysis of this you choose to. It is totally fair game and I welcome the discourse.

If public servants have to go back to the office 3 days a week... Do they finally get back what they had before 2020?

  • an assigned cubicle?
  • a locker to put their personal items?
  • two monitors when needed?
  • on-site keyboards and mice?
  • a bedbug and bat free office? (haha joke, that never happened, even before 2020)

And also the bribes our politicians take from property developers to keep real estate prices high?

@DrALJONES As a local, let me tell you that McGill University fears nothing but a decline in urban property value.

It was the first place that opened during the pandemic as soon as it could, for the sheer joy of killing its students. It keeps trying to build on top of likely unmarked graves, from when it helped the US with its torture experiments and yeah that sounds far-fetched but here we are.

McGill would pay the police extra for every skull cracked.

I think there's a fairly high number of posters out there who, after leaving a public comment, really only want to see the spiritual equivalent of "YAS KING" or YAS QUEEN" and then get upset if it's anything else, and then call it a day I guess. Surely there's has to be a better place for that than an open forum?

PatrickoftheG,
@PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

@Cassandra I am not even judging these people for having this intrinsic need they want to fill, just questioning the process through which they are seeking it out.

It's probably for the best to avoid folks on that kind of path. I think declining t follow those people is the way forward.

Analysis

US-cable news viewers tend not to believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

Cable-news viewers tend to be:
more supportive of Israel’s war effort;
less likely to think Israel is committing war crimes;
less interested in the war in general.

alternative-media viewers tend to:
generally side with the Palestinians;
believe Israel is committing war crimes & genocide;
consider the issue of significant importance.

@DrALJONES I don't want to come down too hard on the Olds, getting old myself, but a thing I've noticed is this: If you tell me your views on Biden, on climate change, on Israel, and a few other subjects, I can instantly tell if you watch cable news channels.

The news networks, especially CNN and MSNBC, rot brains the brains of the over 60 crowd.

PatrickoftheG, to random

The crazy thing about the American election isn't that people are voting for Biden, listen I totally understand having to vote for a lesser evil and to hold your nose when doing so, but the people who think he has been a force for good ever in his life? Hold your nose, vote, that's fine. But to see his historical record and be proud? The Hell?

I can't tell if it's just good propaganda or that thing where people can't help see the world as my team vs that team, just wowsers shameful though.
