Tourism is projected to make up nearly 12% of the global economy by 2033, but it is also poised to consume a troubling 40% of the world’s remaining 1.5°C carbon budget by mid-century, highlighting what experts describe as “industry dishonesty” in efforts to reduce emissions in line with other sectors

“Because right now, high-risk land is subsidized at the same rate as regular, perfectly productive farmland,” she said. “So, you're encouraging farmers to plant in these high-risk areas like floodplains that are going to result in more loss over time.”

Free market insurance companies, ones backed by investors and not taxpayers, aren’t willing to play those odds. A lot of them are pulling out of disaster-prone regions, even entire states

We can’t recycle our way out of climate change

Just 100 companies are responsible for 71% of global greenhouse emissions. These same companies love it when we focus on plastic bags and straws because that means we’re not focusing on them. There can be no substantive change in the state of global climate change without limits on large scale polluters. Everything else is nibbling at the edges

A few years ago, Impossible and Beyond burgers were all the rage. Now, the industry may have to reinvent itself

As for the health question, Pillan acknowledged that plant-based burgers aren’t always the healthiest option — next to, say, a salad or lentils. But he said what matters is that they’re healthier than beef. They have less cholesterol & fat, & some research suggests they lower risk of heart disease compared to red meat

If the green divide deepens in , this could slow down the existential race we’re in. That risks delaying not so much the decarbonisation agenda, but rather the wider sustainability agenda, focused on biodiversity, agriculture and nature conservation. There is sadly less money to make from this agenda. It is here that a political backlash, coupled with the absence of a profit-driven corporate interest, risks derailing Europe’s role in saving people and planet alike
