I have just discovered that those odd waste/recycling bins that are all over the oldest bits of Bergen, Norway, link to an UNDERGROUND PNEUMATIC WASTE TRANSPORT SYSTEM. The waste collects for a bit and then WHOOSH... it's off to the recycling centre. All underground. No bin lorries (garbage trucks), fewer road vehicles, less noise... amazing. @davidho says that my (considerable) excitement about this is entirely unreasonable. I disagree.

Why go to the trouble of separated receptacles if the material is immediately single-streamed?

Here’s a oddity.. I have an FT857&SignaLink that work fine for WSJT-X. I tried recording the audio with Audacity and even with its mic gain at max, recorded audio was very weak. I changed to FM, and used a low-power Baofeng to transmit some voice. S9+++ signal at the 857… but again, very low recorded audio. Turned up the RX control on the SignaLink, but not much louder recording. Do 857’s just emit very low audio through their “data” connector?

@M0CUV Forgive me, 'cause I'm sleepy, but I think so-called DATA connectors are line-level ports, not speaker level.

Canadian biochemist & organic chemist Maud Lenora Menten was born in 1879.

She made significant contributions to enzyme kinetics and histochemistry, & invented a procedure that remains in use. She is most famous for her collaboration with German biochemist Leonor Michaelis in developing the Michaelis-Menten equation, a fundamental concept in enzyme kinetics. This equation describes the rate of enzymatic reactions and is crucial in understanding how enzymes function.

Does anyone on here know a lot about analog telephones? I am trying to figure out how to wire this telephone up for a friend of mine and I am stumped because there are only three wires and I am used to phones having four wires.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Very cool!

Hook switch is, I think, the o-fishy-al Bell System term and it's on the wiring diagram you posted.

I gather from the docs that this is not Western Electric?

VE2UWY,
@VE2UWY@mastodon.radio avatar

@MLE_online I'm far enough behind that someone has surely pointed you at the "ringer equivalence number" (REN). I think that was something that came out of the destruction of the Bell System ... I mean, the breakup of the monopoly. Not sure older (real) phones have RENs but you can probably find a ref online that lets you estimate what you need to ring what will be the most awesome bell.

VE2UWY,
@VE2UWY@mastodon.radio avatar

@MLE_online

My Mom told me, a long time ago, that when I was a baby -- so, like, late '63/early '64! -- that a Bell (Canada) tech would come around every afternoon at nap time to silence the ringer on the phone. Even if you turned the mech ringer all the way down, they were still loud enough to disturb a baby, I guess. I have NO IDEA if this was just a story or if that was an actual service the telco offered. Hard to believe if true.

VE2UWY,
@VE2UWY@mastodon.radio avatar

@MLE_online No idea! Maybe I should dig into that before anyone who would remember is dead (Mom died at the end of '19 but had been ravaged by Alzheimer's for several years before that). Hmm. I wonder if any phone books are online from that era? Off to archive.org!

I found this thing lying on the sidewalk yesterday. It is atrociously marketed as a disposable vape.

There's not much to it, but it has a usb-c port, so it must have a rechargeable battery. It also must have some kind of heating element, a reservoir for The vape juice, and some way of knowing to turn on the heating element when you're inhaling

I decided to re-enlist (heh) in the . There are small but positive signs of progress there, and I figure that they probably dismiss complaints/observations from non-members out of hand... My hope is that they step up and show some actual leadership with regard to politics, diversity, hate speech, etc. It's a ridiculously low bar but it would be a further step in the right direction.

VE2UWY,
@VE2UWY@mastodon.radio avatar

@croyle I'm a Lifer so sort of stuck. :) DEI aside, they don't do well w/their existing programs, being the most poorly managed, followed by their awards programs. WAY too much manual intervention for the latter, poor vision for the former.

AFAIK, the ARRL Forklift is still running around the ARRL Book Warehouse as if it's 1984.

They are failing on many fronts, sadly.

One good thing they did before the recent ball-dropping was to allow members access to all 4 periodicals.

VE2UWY,
@VE2UWY@mastodon.radio avatar

@croyle is great when it works. When it broke badly in '11, members stepped up. K1MU redid the digital pen used to sign logs (TQSL) & improved it greatly. Their fee structure is broken as it is & could be fixed in a revenue-neutral (maybe even R+!) but they won't hear of it because no one currently at actually knows how LOTW works so they are reluctant to change anything.

They are a "tech club" w/a lot of guys (almost all white guys) running it that don't understand modern tech.

@heliomass @heliomass The plastic covering caught fire c.1976. I remember my Mom had it on the TV when I got home from school. I gather no one wanted to pay to install a new one (it's not like it was a defective sports venue) and it decayed from there.

The roof thing ... woof ... I can remember in the 80s, nearly a decade after the games, the special rubber-tired train that was used to transport the roof from the climate-controlled warehouse in, I think, VStP to the stadium in preparation for finally installing it. The tower was eventually topped out, but at least some of the the sections above the bowl were steel and not the concrete Taillibert specified because the ground couldn't support it as designed!

Why? He said "we're all supporting the democracy coalition", & I explained that many in my replies are angry, not supportive. He accused me of something something Hillary's emails re Biden... not sure what that meant, but it was offensive.
