Why, why WHY do we insist on using inches/miles/fahrenheit in the USA? Why can't we join the rest of the civilized world?

Anyone who thinks we shouldn't go metric should have to declare their height in cubits/rods and swear off electricity.

@lauren I suspect you and I are of approximately the same vintage. I recall the resistance to metrification with people saying things like, "If god wanted us to be metric, he'd have given us ten apostles!"

I know it's become acceptable in current usage, but it still grates on me when I see "invite" used as a noun in place of "invitation."

Every time a car crashes into a building, a pedestrian, a bike, a freaking trash can on the sidewalk, we lower the speed limit 5 mph and put in more bollards until this nonsense stops.

I don’t have dark skies anymore, but if you do, and have clear skies, keep an eye on the night this weekend. A G3/G4 solar storm is predicted this weekend. That could spark Aurora all the way down to the southern US.

@NunavutBirder Waaaaiiit. I just realized. It's not that you don't have dark skies because of street lights or city lights. It's because you're in Nunavut. The skies are bright all day!

I was just thinking about Utqiagvik, when I had this realization. I'm slow, I know. :D

started today with last-second bike switch because a tiny piece of broken glass was in the tire of the tandem project (that hasn't been upgraded to new tougher stuff yet). Every time this happens I'm convinced the glass bottle deposit should go up by $1000.10 😡

Critics of divestment (including the WSJ editorial today) are completely missing the point

It's irrelevant whether a single investor divesting will "work" all on its own to achieve results. What's relevant is that when you have a choice to not fund and profit from apartheid and genocide, you make the right choice. It's not a math problem (it's not even a hard problem)

When I was in the Navy, a lot of my shipmates got to see the world outside the USA for the first time. Many were quite proud of it and wanted to share the experience with their families back home.

One shipmate, Sully from Boston, had a week's leave when we were docked in Scotland. He flew his mom over and he took her to France.

When they got back to the UK, they were in customs and there were two lines. One sign read "UK citizens" the other "Foreigners"

Mrs. Sullivan was perplexed...

Man I love headlines - what’s the “gut punch” for home solar? Solar is generating too much electricity(and the grid can’t handle the amount being put back in), so the prices paid to home users is plummeting. 😂🙄

@Wraithe We experienced that "gut punch" personally with our home in San Diego. We produced far more electricity than we used, and SDG&E rates paid us a tenth of what we would have had to pay them.

So, instead of selling our electricity to SDG&E, we kept it. In an electric car. And never paid for gas again.
