PSA: We've been seeing an uptick of spam coming from various Mastodon instances over the last several weeks. Then he goes on to talk about undocumented immigration, but I'm fairly certain that things like gay marriage, & finding out trans people exist are included in the "feeling" of "being conquered" for those this resonates with.

Of course, it makes no sense. See: 'Muslim immigrants spreading communism.'

This is why I don't think "millions of illegal votes" is only about immigration. It's about casting everyone they don't understand as not really "American."

Part of what scares me about right wing politics in the US these days is that if they consider folks whose families have been there for centuries as unAmerican, what will they say about us naturalised citizens. Especially if we're inconveniently queer or believe in democracy and unions or whatever

@Npars01 @reardon15 @TonyStark Agree that wealthy people are doing dodgy shit, but having multiple citizenships is not in itself a red flag.

I also want to highlight that pointing to multiple citizenships as a problem because of "split allegiances" has been used to demonize Jewish people and others across the ages (cf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisemitic_trope#Dual_loyalty )

Why are academics and other university professionals across the on strike?

Pay has fallen in real terms over the past decades, there are gross gaps with respect to racial and gender equality in pay across the sector, the sector relies on casualised labor far too much (and also outsourcing instruction), and workloads are unsustainable.
