To not be aggressively building tens of millions of additional housing units in every city in the global north and opening all borders is to be directly and actively planning the biggest genocide in human history.

Anyone pro national borders is a straight up genocidaire.

A shockingly large proportion of SV technosolutions are band-aids for the "problems" of a techbro who

  • drives to work alone
  • in an expensive car
  • with a good mobile connection
  • through silicon valley traffic

For example:

  • autonomous driving (or gig drivers)
  • food delivery; task rabbit
  • agents to read and respond to your email
  • voice assistants providing emotional validation

my company uses secure channels to send highly confidential documents (which include, for example, clients’ financial information and unredacted social security numbers) to third-party attorneys. what if those attorneys have recall-enabled machines? i can tell you from experience that many of them are not tech-savvy enough to even realize they have it… what if they have a data breach?

so yeah, this is very scary, even if the company disables it on our local devices. https://ourislandgeorgia.net/@Wolven/112553748377817912

The mass exodus from #Windows to #Linux (and #Mac) due to #Windows11 and #AI continues. More and more articles, more and more youtube videos about it, or posts on forums. People are switching. If it continues like that, Linux should have 10% desktop marketshare by the end of the decade (and yes, that's a lot).

A good moment to compare the German political incompetence when it comes to flooding with the Netherlands.

There water management is organized across municipal boundaries and is not really democratic. There are elections for the water boards but nobody cares about them and they’re a fig leaf for a technocratic administration. https://mastodon.online/

alper,

Can Germany reform its political structure and institutions to match?

The Netherlands built up an institutional memory over 1000 years on this topic. Germany’s structures only go back 70 years and there is a paralysis everywhere to reform even the smallest thing.

Next Sunday we have European Elections ( ) in Berlin and this time round I—like many around me—have no idea what to vote for.

Here’s a fast and loose treatment of a bunch of the political parties that are on the ballot here.

alper,
@alper@rls.social avatar

Normally I would vote for the Greens but I think they deserve to suffer for two major mistakes they made:

  1. Their hardline positioning on the Gaza war is not new (Özdemir and others have expressed similar in the past) but it's entirely opposed to their professed values of human rights and equality. A serious case of "Progressive Except Palestine".
  2. Nothing and nobody forced them to take this position so this error is entirely self-inflicted. That is even worse than 1.
alper,
@alper@rls.social avatar

The CDU is politically more or less the same as the Greens but they are a party that has actually been in power regularly. Why would anybody accept the vegetarian substitute?

Still you should only vote for the CDU if you are into quite stupid and corrupt people being in power. The CDU is responsible for Germany being as backwards as it currently is and they benefit from keeping it that way.

alper,
@alper@rls.social avatar

The SPD is a shadow of what was at some point a social democratic party best ignored and left behind in the dustbin of history. Other countries have rediscovered some social democratic elan, but no sign of anything like that in Germany.

The only SPD politicians I can respect are the ones who stand for election in small country-side towns opposing the hordes of nazis. That takes guts and is a service to democracy.

@alper@rls.social avatar

The Linke got gutted after Sarah Wagenknecht left the party to finally start her own thing (we'll talk about that one later) and took half the seats with her.

I haven't heard anything from them after the party imploded so I think they may be dead.

Die Tierschutzpartei is one of many parties (Tierschutz hier!, V-Partei³) for animal lovers.

Unfortunately I don't see them achieve the same success that the PvdD did in the Netherlands who entered parliament as a party to the left of the Greens and became a small but relatively vocal element in Dutch politics.
