Just a reminder: You should have your own site, with your own links, on a domain that you control. We'll give you that for free on @glitchdotcom (just bring your own domain) and you can set it up in a few minutes. https://glitch.com/glitchinbio
Today is the anniversary of the MOVE bombing. The only thing that’s changed is police are far more militarized, far more funded, and far less accountable, while their supporters fly a desecrated flag to explicitly endorse their violent attacks.
Loved what @cassidoo says here about human curation — it’s a vital part of discovery and inspiration on the web. As she mentions, we’ve been doing it on @glitchdotcom from the start (including experiments with things like print zines) but it’s a big part of what we’re focusing on in the new version of Glitch that we’re previewing now. Read Cassidy’s piece here, and then ponder a bit… how should human curation online work? https://cassidoo.co/post/human-curation/
As people say a lot to me "Look sort-by-date is still an algo but it's a transparent one" I wish we had even more inroads to the nearly twenty-five years of content on MeFi, but not at the expense of the site's current transparency.
Just trying to imagine if people a few hundred years ago had been here to witness, in the span of a few weeks, an eclipse, an earthquake, a supernova as bright as the North Star, and an unexpected appearance of the northern lights.
One of the great curses in technology is that, if you’ve ever built a content management system, especially a blogging tool, you can never stop building better ones in your head, even though the actual products in reality never get any better. Here @mathowie falls down the rabbit hole again. https://a.wholelottanothing.org/a-blueprint-of-my-dream-blogging-cms/
@anildash on the ShopTalk podcast where we discussed the post for an hour, at one point I just said that basically I want MovableType from 2005 but with a few more features
@kimonostereo I’ve been using @eleventy on @glitchdotcom and I love it. I can just write when I wanna write, and there’s fun easy stuff to tinker with when I wanna do that.
I’d asked this in hopes of identifying people who are currently early in their careers, but it’s interesting how many read it as asking who inspired them early in their career. https://me.dm/@anildash/112214630805398084
@anildash I was wondering if I was the one misunderstanding the question, the answers were so off 😅, but I guess correct answers are much harder to produce!
@anildash “in tech” and “early career” can both mean a lot but just thinking about people I’ve met or followed in the last year or so, I’m psyched about Betsy Valu Rohney, Jacky Alciné, Rudy Fraser, and Ben Go (and a bunch of covid tracking alums who aren’t very public but will be doing incredible things)
There's been a ton of conversation about the xz exploit, but the real reason this kind of thing could even happen is because of human vulnerability, not a technology vulnerability. So we have to take a deep look at how we truly support the people who make open source happen. Here's the real, substantive investment @devs has been providing: https://www.fastly.com/blog/what-can-you-actually-do-to-reduce-the-threat-of-hacks-like-xz
@anildash Agree, but I wish they'd run their own instance. Right now I have to trust that potus@threads.net's blue checkmark means something...and we've seen a history of blue checkmarks becoming less credible over time (thanks, Elon).
