This tree-planting initiative from Township in partnership with a bunch of orgs and itself is so inspiring!

https://aroundtheregion.ca/dedicated-tree-planters-beautify-rural-roadways-with-22000-trees/

What's that quote about not doubting that a handful of committed people can change things for the better? Maybe this isn't affecting the entire world, but it sure is affecting this corner of it, and hopefully it's inspirational to other municipalities and regions across

I wrote an article for Unsustainable Magazine that is based around my dissertation research findings about what it means to wish for systems overhaul. The consequences of that desire are what I consider now in this article. It gets a bit personal; I am embedded within my own specific context and my observations come out of that situation.

Yesterday, I gave a video tour of our current mulch / garden situation and uploaded it to the @solarpunkpresents YouTube. We lay down a bunch of cardboard to smother the unwanted plants in the places we wanted to make gardens, then re-used wood chips that have been sitting out all winter from the old tree in the backyard. If you're interested, check it out!

Made a garden box on Thursday! Gonna make three more of these suckers this week, line them, and fill'em up. The last frost date is May 16 and I'm gonna be READY.

At "Seedy Saturday" at the library, put on by the Horticultural Society here. This makes me want badly to be a good gardener, the kind that doesn't just sow seeds and then forget they exist for weeks. My lavender experiment haunts me....

Hey and , this mag is soliciting from members and also other forms of from non-members for their second issue. They also pay rather well (comparatively). http://thenewmodality.com/contributor-commitments-rates-guidelines/

For a long time I've been bothered by problems with the Paradise Lost article. Periodically I go try to improve one section or another, but I feel like it needs a group effort. Do I know any Miltonists or sympathizers interested in a mini editathon?? or Milton haters if you've got the receipts!

(? is that a hashtag anyone would use??)

@lawrenceevalyn boosted! I also feel this would benefit from the folks who follow the @academicchatter group.

Pretty excited that the Solarpunk Conference Journal is out! I have a paper in it called "Disrupting the present in a positive way: Solarpunk and learning from the past". I'm so happy to see it out, and amongst such fantastic company!

On a related note: hey friends, if you had to describe what is on the space of a single poster board, what would you write?

(I have my own plan for bulleted points, but want to know what you think is most important to get across to con-goers who maybe have never heard of solarpunk before.)

arielkroon,
@arielkroon@wandering.shop avatar

@vga256 Definitely going to emphasize hope, and I think "aspiration" is also pretty important! Thanks!

Wow, I got a lot of awesome suggestions in response to this post! I just finished making up my own poster board and it manages to not to look totally juvenile due to my complete lack of design and handwriting skills, so I'm taking it as a win.
Hopefully it's intriguing enough that people ask me more about

Y'all I wrote about my this week for my @solarpunkpresents article bc I'm a hopeless lady and also a chronic overthinker, so of course I'm super conflicted about straight-up owning another living being.

Anyone else feel like this, tho? where are concerned are so squishy. I'm glad that the word exists honestly, shoutout to people for being mad wise about with non-human .

Thoughts?

Finally have started to listen to Christmas carols / seasonal music to try to force myself into a more festive mood (never mind that I've had Mariah Carey's version of "All I Want For Christmas is You" as my hellish earworm all month; I must have racked up some bad karma earlier).

Anyway, yearly reminder to myself that I am a cranky git who dislikes most post-1947 Christmas-themed media, so I really should stop trying.

The classics are where it's at. Listening to Mediaeval Baebes' rendition of "We Three Kings" and the line "king and god and sacrifice" goes so hard.

Like, it didn't have to. But it did. And I appreciate that. Give me the songs about suffering, please. It's cold and dark and they are far more relatable.

arielkroon,

@seanbala I'm a fan of The Coventry Carol and Veni, Veni Immanuel, also! But yes, Advent Carols are where it's at. Have any recommendations?

Stoked that the episode on that I recorded with @joey, @hydroponictrash, and @solarpunkcast is live at @podcast

It's a reflection on / continuation of the conversation we started at the last June called "From to Solarpunk "

If you don't already listen to I highly recommend it!

Every year the COP tries to be the Council of Elrond deciding what to do about the Ring (aka fossil fuels), except instead of Boromir, it's Denethor advocating that we need to use it to save/preserve the world as it was, and now he's the host. There are no adults in charge.

Liberating things: saying "I don't actually know yet" cheerfully in response to a question at a conference about a game I was developing. I did this as a first-year PhD and that's a high I won't soon forget. Baffled the older prof asking me too.

Finally saw The Batman last night, and my ice-cold take is that I enjoyed watching a sophomore superhero screw up and develop character. It's the same reason I like Spiderman stories: he fails and then learns and gets good. Also kudos to the film for not beating the dead horse of backstory. I feel like I watched a superhero origin film without it being a superhero origin film. If that makes sense.
