New Year Resolutions for Devs who Survived 2023

  1. Seek nostalgia-worthy IP and make games that cater to that built-in audience -- Previous examples include Friday the 13th and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Terminator: Resistance and RoboCop: Rogue City, and even older titles like Rockstar's The Warriors and Ghostbusters: the Video Game. The Running Man, A Nightmare on Elm Street, RoboCop Versus The Terminator, Rambo: First Blood ... Sign me up!

atmanrising,
@atmanrising@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar
  1. Dig deeper and leave no stone unturned -- Consider more obscure, low-budget IP from the '80s and '90s. Don't get stuck on top-tier IP. Tons of incredible B-movies were made back then, with awesome locations and fun characters. We finally have the tools and technology to make these games at a reasonable cost. John Carpenter alone could be goldmine. We really need a new game based around John Carpenter's The Thing!

@atmanrising@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar
  1. Think globally and broaden your horizons -- Assemble a team with talent from all over the world. Study other cultures. Read history books. Bring something NEW to games, something truly unexpected. Think in terms of text adventures, just plain adventure games, the perfect 5-hour action RPG with a twist at the end.

@Lizette603_23 Because motion smoothing usually results in Soap Opera Effect, which makes movies and TV shows look like cheap soap operas.

Here's some good and bad news about the game industry ... from today to 2024 and beyond.

(1/?)

Since #TGA didn't go there, bad news first:

• 8,000 people laid off, with more on the way

• Risk-averse investors taking money away from games

• Slow growth compared to 2022 -- the beginning of this very painful market correction

• Web3, virtual reality and the metaverse failed to deliver (again)

EA should really consider a Syndicate (2012) remaster.

While extremely linear and fairly short, this Starbreeze Studios-developed FPS was quite a looker back then ... and it played well, too. In fact, Syndicate was ahead of its time in terms of gameplay.

atmanrising,
@atmanrising@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@dev_ric If you like shooters, you'll like the 2012 game. It runs well on PS3 and Xbox 360. There's a PC version as well :)

The original game is an absolute classic. It even got a port to the Sega Genesis (!)

So there's a big thing about Unity shutting down Weta and that sucks and etc but buried in the middle is this:

"Unity will no longer mandate that employees work from offices three a days a week and will reduce 'full in-office services' to three days a week in most locations, the company said."

Which amounts to a patent admission at a corporate level that (1) WFH is cheaper, and (2) Return To Office isn't worth pushing at a corporate level.

Wonder if the worker bees at other studios are just meant to ignore this. Cus, er. It's right there.

@glassbottommeg Shit, they're really closing down Weta? All of it?

The polity books are super good. The first series is a 5 book long spy drama about an agent in charge of hunting down humans who want to secede from AI rule, rogue AIs that turn to crime, and investigating aliens who dont make sense to anyone. The second series is a trilogy set on a planet that isnt ruled by the Polity AIs but the planet turns everyone into Davey Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean so the population decided they had to invest in sailboats and everyone wants to know about the virus that makes people into immortal sea creatures. @bookstodon

atmanrising,
@atmanrising@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Montaagge @bookstodon I'm still reading the first book in the series -- read a "one-off" novel as well and really enjoyed it. I love the writing, characters, and world-building.

It's just a bummer that the author went anti-vax/anti-mask during the pandemic (he's an extreme libertarian).

Fallout New Vegas 📌

I haven't played this game in a long time... wanted to get away from work for a bit, so today I played a little...

Got three achievements. 8 left until the complete collection. When will I play next time, probably next year. It's a game I miss a lot and sometimes I start it up just to spend a few hours there, which is very rare because I haven't played much games in the last 2 years

@atmanrising@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@maxim Fallout 3 and New Vegas run like a champ on the Series X.

Pitching your new game to reviewers and streamers? Here are some quick tips:

  1. Put the trailer, genre, and any unique gameplay features front and center when you pitch the press. Don't make journalists go on a wild goose chase for essential info and assets.

  2. Don't embellish -- describe accurately.

  3. Give them enough lead time to get a good feel for the game. Arcade or more straightforward games can use a week. A 40-hour epic needs at least 10 days.

Here's a challenge for you: boot up Mortal Kombat on the Sega CD and play Track 17.

(This is outside of the game, using the CD player interface. It works on normal CD players as well)

A Thing I've noticed is that in addition to high power draw, it seems it's become normal for high end electronics to get so warm that the plastic 'pops' and resettles. I haven't had anything be damaged so far from it, but it's still slightly alarming.

My very expensive monitor does it, my PS5 does it, and to my surprise, my Analogue Pocket does it despite not getting very hot.

atmanrising,
@atmanrising@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@SirTapTap My launch PS5 "pops" as well. It used to freak me out.

Does anyone have a rechargeable battery and charger combo they swear by? I use mainly 9V and AAA batteries with occasional AAs for things like my mouse, keyboard and AC remote. It seems insane to buy single use but I remember rechargeables not being great in the past.
