I've resigned to the fact that internet privacy doesn't exist.. Once you make that jump and treat the vast majority like a data collection machine a lot more makes sense... And when you do use a service, app, or website you do it eyes open.. my 2 cents..

This is how our government has been corrupted:

  1. Donors give huge sums to elect politicians to office.

  2. Elected officials rewrite the rules in the donors' favor.

  3. Donors make a huge profit.

  4. Repeat.

For the sake of democracy, we must get Big Money out of politics.

It seems that when money was equated with free speech democracy was destroyed. Full Stop.

Across about ten things this week, I'll say this: mastodon has a real toxic reply guy culture going on and it is exhausting to receive this EVERY SINGLE TIME you dare say something that gets attention, as a marginalized female scientist. Worse to me tbh than typical trolling because it is so deeply rooted in credibility deficit "know your place" patterns. You all are worse than birdsite for me, where I have nearly five times more followers. Definitely thinking about leaving.

Big tech now arguing that the platforms they’ve built can’t be held accountable for e.g. racism, as racism has been around for all of human history. Well yes, you know what else has? Nipples. Interesting how easy those were to ban, but racism? “Content moderation is just so hard!”

Get the fuck out of here.

avlcharlie,
@avlcharlie@mastodon.social avatar

@anderseknert
This bumps against one of my probably unpopular opinions that section 230, which treats social media like a telephone utility, should be abolished and never have seen the light of day. By filtering content, selectively displaying content, and foremost advertising, every social media platform should be directly responsible and LIABLE for their content. There. I said it.

The numbers of those who don't affiliate with any religion are surging in the U.S., but only 4% of Americans self-identify as "atheist." And while we may not have an official national religion, Christianity is largely baked into many aspects of our culture. With it comes stigma attached to atheism, which makes many reluctant to embrace it.

But why? Should the lack of religious belief really be looked upon any differently than belief? We unpack that question and more today in The Big Picture: https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/atheism-america-stigma-religion-christianity

@georgetakei

I had a friend tell me he was anti-theist.. it took me a while to figure out he was right. subjugation to imaginary dieties is definitely couter productive and actually detrimental to society. Hard to make that objective call when you grow up with everyone around you telling you eternal damnation or submit.

Okay, word people, help me brainstorm?

I'm trying to think of a better name for cases where improperly joined claims are brought together to seize assets en masse.

"Mass marketplace asset seizure cases" is pretty accurate but it reminds me too much of "mass market."

I suppose I could call them "mass asset seizure cases" or "marketplace asset seizure cases" but the numerosity & the target (online sellers) are key to this phenomenon.

What synonym for "mass" (or other phrase) could I use?

Even though I absolutely love , sometimes I get tired of encountering the same issues over and over again, and of the "it's 99% there" situation.

Let me know if you agree with these issues or not, and if you have others that personally bother you.

(Also, 2nd video out of 4 that isn't edited by me, previous feedback has been incorporated partially, let me know what you thought!)

Longtime yt follower, good to see you here.

The problem will always be that Linux isn't Windows and for the mainstream, without technical interests, just do the things people, it will never be done. (Over 10 yrs on Linux for me btw)

If we could roll back the clock to the early 90s, stop MS from OS domination, and in the break between win 3.1 and 95 had honest competition.. well.. ya.. it might get done.

That's the hurdle.

The Alabama legislature was ordered by the Supreme Court to draw an additional Black majority or close-to-majority Congressional district. In response, they have decided to defy SCOTUS. What do you think should be done in response?

A history of the top marginal tax rates on the wealthiest Americans:

1940: 81%
1950: 84%
1960: 91%
1970: 72%
1980: 70%
1990: 28%
2000: 40%
2010: 35%

For 50 years, corporate backed politicians in Congress have slashed taxes to line the pockets of their wealthy donors.

avlcharlie,
@avlcharlie@mastodon.social avatar

@rbreich does this mean america was great somewhere around 84% tax rate? 😂

“This state” takes ten characters; “Nevada” takes six.

This is a forward reference headline, which goes out of its way to conceal what the corresponding story says.

It’s a consequence of click-based advertising and of course it makes our information streams less useful. The practice started among clickbait junk websites but has spread to CNN, the Washington Post, the New York Times, and others.

avlcharlie,
@avlcharlie@mastodon.social avatar

The Supreme Court also needs expanded. At the time lifelong appointments were granted, the life expectancy was much lower, most likely in the 40s to 50s.. we need turnover at that rate by expansion.

Dear @Gargron,

Please reevaluate your decision to incentivise centralisation on mastodon.social in the official app.

This is the sort of design a VC-funded startup would implement, not a non-profit acting in the interests of a healthy commons.

I’m sure you don’t want mastodon.social to become mini-Twitter and you don’t want to become mini-Musk.

That’s not how we win this.

More instances, not larger instances is the key.
