Which Communism are you talking about? The one where everybody shares everything or the one where there's a dictator making them share nothing?

avlcharlie,
@avlcharlie@mastodon.social avatar

@freemo
I wondered if that was the angle. It is an unfortunate but realistic view.

While not probable I still hold out that there is a possibility, however minuscule, that we can break that cycle.

Gravitational waves reveal “mystery object” merging with a neutron star

The so-called "mass gap" might be less empty than physicists previously thought.

Reminds me of something I've been stewing on lately.. if mass distorts apacetime and light, and we are not Maxwell's demon knowing the position and status of every Mass out there, it makes me wonder how you get a accurate measurement on anything.. I could see things being many orders of magnitude wrong.. but then again I'm not that scientist :-)

Boomer: At your age in 1970 I paid off college and bought a house with hard work.

Millennials: At your age in 1970 college was 5% of median salary—Now it’s 44%. A median home was $24K—Now its $417K. The top marginal tax rate was 70%—Now its 37%. You worked hard—and then closed the door behind you.

avlcharlie,
@avlcharlie@mastodon.social avatar

@QasimRashid
This is also the direct answer to why doesn't anybody want to work today.

It's not the same thing we're working for. We're working for survival and food. Owning a house and the general American dream does not exist anymore.

That's why nobody wants to work anymore.

Copyright is a deeply flawed weapon to use against the generative "AI" companies. But the tech industry's arrogant vacuuming up of everything in sight -- ingesting what others created so it can re-sell it to us -- is moving us quickly toward the worst possible Internet, a pay-per-view system that ruins what we've collectively built.

What is clear, meanwhile, it that Big Tech -- including Big AI -- should be broken up, period.

avlcharlie,
@avlcharlie@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor
I'm all for breaking up the monoliths, but to me the elephant in the room of AI is what data did you train on.

If you back up from that question then you end up with data protection, privacy, and the lack of transparency on personal and copyrighted data.

We are in desperate need of laws regulating the transparency of data and especially personal data.

It's unfortunate it's very unlikely any of that will happen in the US.

Niels Bohr publishes the first paper of the trilogy "On the constitution of atoms and molecules" in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science. This trilogy provides a comprehensive review of the origin and content of Bohr's atomic history. In a longer perspective, Bohr's quantum atom of 1913 gave rise to the later Heisenberg-Schrödinger quantum mechanics and all its relevant consequences.

  • step in and help review a few PRs

  • help the project triage/reproduce bugs

  • if code in the PR looks complicated or is hard to understand, ask for an explanation

  • express your gratitude to the maintainers

  • make your company sponsor projects they depend on

The technology bug hit me in the early 90s and I ended up with a job at a Mom and pop's PC repair shop. I got interested in alternate operating systems and stumbled on Mandrake and the original BeOS.. which was a great little operating system that unfortunately got Microsoft stomped. I made the final jump to Linux somewhere in the early 2000s because I got tired of the Microsoft tax and never looked back.

"I just cut my expenses. Unlike my friends, I didn't go out, I ate at home, I watched free to air TV instead of Netflix and I thrift shopped. Add that to the $500,000 my parents gave me for a deposit, and I was able to achieve my goals in just 6 months"
