@clive Calm down. This is a 737-300 manufactured 30 years ago. This accident is almost certainly not on Boeing. The left wing caught fire "briefly" after aborting a takeoff at high speed went wrong and they departed the runway (for unknown reasons) where the gear collapsed and the left engine ingested bits of cowling by the look of it. The injuries were all minor according to AvHerald. The headline and picture are sensationalised.

"what do they expect "Mastodon" to do here?"

  1. turn off link previews, if not completely then at least by default, or
  2. have one instance generate the preview then share it with the others instead of each instance generating its own preview, or
  3. randomly delay link preview generation up to an hour or two so that the load isn't all at once, or
  4. restrict link previews to known huge sites which can shrug off the load.

If we have an H5N1 pandemic now, NZers will die in appalling numbers.

  1. Te Whatu Ora (Health NZ) hamstrung by large spending & staff cuts on top of already overworked staff.
  2. govt either apathetic or openly hostile to strict public health measures like quarantine/lockdowns and mandatory vaccination.
  3. govt forcing kids to go to school rather than stay home sick.
  4. cost of living forcing people to work when they should stay home.
  5. zero leadership in govt

Does anyone have any good resources for making a drag-and-drop list reordering interface accessible to non-mouse users? The lists can be nested.

Using a form seems clunky:

  1. Place item at top level OR inside Item B
  2. Place at start OR after Item C

Reveal up/down arrows to keyboard focus? How do I move items in and out of nested hierarchies? How to I keep the primary list interface from not getting cluttered?

benchaotica,
@benchaotica@mastodon.nz avatar

@mez I don't have any resources or web dev experience but I have two thoughts.

  1. Tab/shift-tab is used in word processors to increase/decrease the nesting level of bulleted/numbered list items.
  2. a command (vi) style interface. Type:
    i 6 -4 to insert item 6 before item 4,
    a 6 4 to add item 6 to the bottom of the sub-list under item 4
    m 6 -2 to move item 6 up two places.

I need some mysql help.

I have this piece of code:
$result = mysqli_query($db,"UPDATE FROM pages WHERE status = 'D' AND status_date <= '$delete_date'");

Is there something wrong with the code?

benchaotica,
@benchaotica@mastodon.nz avatar

@bananabob In an UPDATE you'd have a SET clause to specify values to update specific fields to. Instead of UPDATE I would guess either you want to SELECT FROM, so you can see which rows would be affected, or DELETE to delete the rows. This looks like a cleanup function to delete rows which are flagged as D (deletable?) and were flagged(?) before the specified delete date.

I get that ChatGPT & its ilk consume vast amounts of water to train the models. I’ve also heard that it takes N litres per prompt. But is that some sort of estimate based on training consumption or is the computational cost of a server just responding to a prompt that high that it has to be significantly cooled? I figured once the training was done, the rest was computationally cheap? Why is that not the case?

(Bonus Q, how does it compare to general data centre server cooling?)

benchaotica,
@benchaotica@mastodon.nz avatar

@mez this paper
https://oecd.ai/en/wonk/how-much-water-does-ai-consume
implies that it there is a water cost to just responding to a prompt (what it calls an "inference") for cooling of the servers, and in particular the GPUs, which run the model, and separate from the cost of training the model.

@mez nVidia's A100 80GB AI accelerator has TDP of 300-400W or 500W with "custom thermal solutions". There would be multiple of these in a server, as I understand it. Different versions of H100 are rated at 300-700W (max) and the graphic on their website shows a server with 8 of the 300W PCIe version installed.

There's still an addiction, there's an expensive personal product with embodied emissions, and you still annoy/endanger those around you, but a bit less than before.

Fisker ocean form Carwow, 1000miles traveled , added 2.7miles / 863wh. In total..

The solar panels here are roughly 400w

Here's a thought, put that solar on a building and generate good power all day every day instead...

On a house roof in the UK this would generate about 1.2kwh a day

@Rjdlandscapes my feeling is that, as a minor party in opposition to a government that reflexively rejects anything proposed by anyone left of John Key, there's not a lot that can be done in parliament for the next few years. (or until the coalition falls apart.) There's plenty to be done elsewhere.

The government is cutting thirty-nine departments/agencies by 6.5-7.5%

This is purely so our finance minister can give landlords a $3bn backdated tax break and still not resign her position

Pretty much every government service in NZ will become worse through NACT's cuts

Police, Health, justice etc.

A government is supposed to manage the country for the people not wealthy landlords

benchaotica,
@benchaotica@mastodon.nz avatar

@Rjdlandscapes I particularly "like" how ideologically driven this all is. The tax cuts are sacrosanct, an article of faith, and reality must be altered to fit them at any cost.

This is really starting to open up some questions around AI and how we apply laws to it

You learned from copyright material, every book you read, every tv show you watched etc.

You were trained at school/university on copyrighted material, you make money from that training.

Does AI get the same benefits? Or not?
