In other news, I finally managed to replace the hideous modern IKEA lamp in my lab that was left by the previous tenants with something more period correct (a ceiling lamp that I’ve owned since some time in the early nineties). It’s showing some signs of wear from long term use in previous apartments I lived in (plus some yellowing that I didn’t bother to remove) and I love it. Lamp nostalgia. 😅

Twice in the past week I've read scholars who should know better repeat the urban legend that the QWERTY keyboard was designed to slow down typing, and thus, jamming, on early typewriters.

That'd be cool if it were true, but it's not, and the the truth is even cooler. The QWERTY keyboard evolved over time, shaped by two forces: (1) since the early machines were used by telegraph operators, the keys were arranged to avoid common transcription errors; and (2) competing patents of the typewriter slightly arranged the keyboard layout in order to qualify as new (and therefore patentable) designs.

I made an economics simulator in XKCD

A short video of XKCD page 2916 titled "Machine", which is a little inventor game in the style of The Incredible Machine. You build a machine that moves some balls from an emitter to it's corresponding goal, and then hit submit. When complete, it shows your machine hooked up to other entries, showing the balls flowing through. Since yesterday, they added a shot glass and a participation trophy, and I got a panel where there's an emitter of yellow balls at the top of the screen. I made a shot glass stack, and set it up so that the yellow balls are falling into it like a stream of piss. The balls accumulate at the top and then the rest bounce off and get sucked away. The cups at the bottom of the stack never get filled shy of a single stray ball. I named this contraption "trickle down pissenomics".

German physicist and musician Ernst Chladni died #OTD in 1827.

His most important work, for which he is sometimes labeled as the father of acoustics, included research on vibrating plates (the so-known Chladni figures or Chladni patterns) and the calculation of the speed of sound for different gases. He also undertook pioneering work in the study of meteorites and is regarded by some as the father of meteoritics.

Well @#$&!!! My bot blew up again during testing. 😡😡😡 This time I managed to turn off the power before the LiPo caught fire. Looks like one of the drive motor ESCs blew (hard) taking the receiver with it. The LiPo took a bit of damage but appears to be a bystander. Now I'm not sure if I'm going to have a functioning robot by Thursday. I have (different) backup parts arriving tomorrow, so if I can jury-rig something there is a shot, but I don't know... UGH...

Ten years, we've had this car, and I only just realized that it has a CD player.

The slot is hidden behind the touchscreen and it does some cool transformers shit to let you access it.

The tiny 400mAh #LithiumPolymer #battery in this cheap #Bluetooth #speaker turned into a puffed up pillow. I've replaced it with a 350mAh one I salvaged from a single-use disposable #vape device. In spite of the lower capacity, it is significantly larger than the original battery. Hope it can still fit in the available space.

Also fitted a JST connector to the speaker wires in case I need to disassemble again for a future #repair.

Dzisiejsza rozrywka - pozyskiwanie ogniw litowych z jednorazowych wejpów z elektrośmieci. Jeszcze sporo do przerobienia, ale już mnie mdli od oparów aromatów do nikotyny. Oczywiście, pomieszczenie było wentylowane, a wejpy zdezynfekowane przed operacją.

Z jednej strony się cieszę bo super są te bateryjki. Lekkie i wydajne, na pewno się przydadzą. Ale jednocześnie, dobre ogniwa po prawdopodobnie jednym cyklu ładowania idą do śmieci, a banki energii kosztują tyle że hej. Nie wspomnę nawet o koszmarach ekologicznych związanych z wydobyciem litu.
