LOL Rupert Murdoch's resignation letter rails against "the elites."

Rupert Murdoch, the 96th richest man in the world, worth $17.4 billion.

The elites.

I often think that Petunia was manufactured without the default cat software so she has a vague notion of how to cat but not really.

For instance, she understands there is a lap cat category of cats, but has little idea what that entails or how to sit on a lap.

A cat sleeping on the side of a person's legs in an awkward upright position.
A calico cat lying on a lap in a strange uncomfortable position, almost curled up in a circle, but with all the wrong angles. She looks very uncomfortable.

I used Duck Duck Go for the first time a few years ago and ended up stopping because its results were terrible, but I re-tried it again when news about Google's new trackers broke and it is a million times better - it's very usable now and often provides better search results than Google does. I recommend it.

I cannot imagine what it must be like to be an Indigenous person in Australia today and having to live through a very public and large-scale rejection of your right to self-determination and autonomy in your own land by the people who stole it from you.

Sure is interesting how the Western governments' response to seven aid workers being killed is way more indignant than it has been to that of more than 30K Gazans - mostly women and children - being killed. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/4/2/netanyahu-admits-israeli-forces-killed-ngo-workers-in-gaza

It's funny/not funny that practically every company's preference for new customers over prizing their current customers is also demonstrated online where you're always presented with a "get an account" option HUGE and the login button is in tiny print or relegated to a corner or something out of the way.

Who cares about YOU, existing customers??

God I fucking hate right wing governments. The NZ government was sworn in yesterday and one of their first things they did was scrap the generational smoking ban. Priorities. https://time.com/6339910/new-zealand-scraps-generational-smoking-ban/

Like everyone and their dog (literally) I love the new Commanda Bridge to bits but wow if it isn’t ever a demonstration in your cycle network only being as strong as its weakest link - the pathway to get there on the Gatineau side is pitch black after dark and the whole thing feels so isolated and dodgy. I’ve started taking a new route home at night to avoid it.

"The federal government is also calling on major grocers to come up with plans to stabilize grocery prices in the "near-term." Trudeau warned that if grocery giants are unable to produce such plans by Thanksgiving, the Liberals will take steps to impose a solution on them."

A step toward that would be canning the loyalty programs and just making the price the price. People who aren't members of those programs - which are used to spy on consumers - have to pay more to cover the cost to run it.

It honestly is truly wild to me that after Twitter imploded under the tutelage of a billionaire megalomaniac so many people - instead of going to decentralized, community-run Mastodon - chose to grasp desperately onto other platforms started by millionaire or billionaire megalomaniacs, alternatively the one by the guy directly involved in the downfall of democracy (Meta) or the one by the guy who started Twitter (which was always a shit show!) to begin with.

Like, what???

Putting aside the conversation about cities keeping tax rates artificially low forever, I find it interesting that city staff in Toronto would recommend this large of a tax increase when a leftist mayor like Chow is in office. It makes me wonder if they are trying to deliberately screw her, since you can already see that the news outlets are like OLIVIA CHOW TAX HIKE OMG as if it's already a done deal. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/toronto-city-budget-launch-1.7078446

And that's often the thing about the switch back and forth between artificially "fiscally conservative" governments and ones who know what it costs to provide good public services, is that those liar fiscal conservatives just kick the can down the road, knowing that it will force those who know it's not sustainable to bring in larger increases, tanking their popularity, and forcing a changeover back to the liar fiscal conservatives.

@grivettcarnac I feel like people use the concept of “privilege” these days just to note that change is hard and to justify making no effort to change - and it is black and white thinking. Even moving a couple of your shops is still participating in the boycott - it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Sounds just like the argument against bike lanes acting as though that means 1000% of your errands and such need to be done by bikes.

Correction: half a century of auto- and commuter-based city planning resulted in downtown cores like Ottawa being single-industry focused non-bourhoods where the sidewalks are rolled up on weekends and evenings (most businesses even ignoring even the possible patronage of neighbouring communities) had a devastating impact that was exacerbated by the pandemic.

@grivettcarnac It always astonishes me the extent to which people start young in pushing conformity and conspicuous consumption and the way they attempt to bully "weirdness" out of people who won't conform. It's such garbage to watch kids' lights being dimmed as they're subjected to this shit and pushed to get in line.

Let me see if I have this right. For all my life, a (common cold) can't be prevented - you just have to catch them all and then you are immune from them. Your immune system can't help you. It is a virus and you can't be vaccinated against them.

But, for a , if you catch one, you prevent future ones because your immune system reacts. And, you can be vaccinated against this type of virus.

And public health is saying this so little experience with Corona Viruses.

Did I get this right? Sure, these are different viruses, but they behave in completely opposite ways?

    casseagull,
    @casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

@human3500 And actually the first one is NOT true, as it turns out. Lots of the viruses we saw as being "just a cold" or "just chicken pox" now are actually known to cause more insidious things as well. Chicken pox leads to lifelong risk for shingles. Mono caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus can cause a whole host of secondary chronic issues including fucking cancer. There are tons of them and we're learning more and more all the time.
