I‘m wondering if there were still people in Germany in 1933 who loudly abstained from voting because “the choice between NSDAP and everything else is like the choice between pest and cholera” and “voting does not really change anything”.
And did they feel some smug justification that “the political class” failed?

@chris

Because it was Parliamentary rather than our system, it was more about directing their votes for/within the coalitions. Within the analogy you made, this was Thalmann's theory when he was explaining why Nazis were the better option.

Although most parties thought that they would all be "next" after the Nazi collapse, Ernest Thalmann was the one who explicitly sought to ally with Hitler to destroy liberal democracy ("the political class") because he thought it would just hurt "the right people".

For his trouble, he was among the first thrown in prison and was one of the few for whom Hitler specifically ordered the execution.

I desparately need an emergency service to challenge my new-to-me-and-maybe-stupid idea that (the most delicious food) and (the boat) are relatives.
It‘s just too plausible, they are little ships!

I can live with being one of today‘s lucky 10‘000, just tell me it‘s true!

So vaccines are dangerous because is dangerous.
stops mRNA synthesis in the human body very effectively, it is absolutely natural, organic and available for free in wild mushrooms.
is hiding this fact from us and even managed to give the most common of these mushrooms a bad name.
not ” may be a good campaign slogan!

@vampirdaddy But it’s not organic!

I’d like to file a formal complaint on the total lack of documentation for something useful I set up half a year ago for myself.
I have no idea why it works.

For those who like , here's an sql that looks for the currently used spam-images per instance, limited by the last 3 hours and at least 10 hits.
I’ll use this as a blocklist for now.
Edit to clarify: It looks for a hash of the blurred pictures created by mastodon, so it actually looks for the pictures in a way, not hashtags.

chris,
@chris@strafpla.net avatar

@michael I’m not sure about the level of uniqueness of the blurhash, but I think it can be very useful. Needs more exploration.

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@chris yeah, but you could probably make this quite agnostic of individual hashes:

  • get images with same hash
  • get those that tag multiple users
  • and come from the same instance (or small number thereof)

You might even look at whether the account is new-ish, whether it has ever posted ‘normal’ posts etc.

This seems like something that could be automated and allow for tackling the problem with automation which is crucial to combat this wave clearly.

Can we please have a feature that lets us block traffic of Mastodon servers that have not been patched?
The API gives away the version number of the server - I‘m close to hacking a script that creates blocklists based on Server versions.

shanie,
@shanie@tails.ch avatar

@chris Sadly the is not the fault of unpatched instances - it's free, unfettered registration.

: Protect your instance by making your registration "Approval Required" until this all blows over here: /admin/settings/registrations

chris,
@chris@strafpla.net avatar

@shanie thanks for clarification.
Still I think this would be a useful feature.
Maybe Mastodon should expose whether registration is open, too, so we can react on this.

A devboard with for - does it exist? It seems that LoRa is allowed on 169MHz in EU with the usual caveats so it should exist, but I can’t find it.

holgerschurig,

@chris Well. there are quite some ESP boards out for "Meshtastic", a chat system using LoRA. Probably not dev boards, but like any ESP32 quite hackable, I'd say. Maybe you search there?

I had a stupid idea what to do during the holidays: printing funny magnetic applications for s at . Unfortunately my printer jammed, thoroughly, so there is only one in existence, yet.😭😭
If anybody wants to pick up and extend on the idea, that could still be fun!
(Please post pictures and files somewhere and tag them - like animal and mask, that was the plan - so they can be found.)

Now that‘s a cute fishing attempt:
The administrator of my email server writes from administrator@mydomain.tld to mail@mydomain.tld:
I need to follow a link and enter my password to affirm that my email is still in use, or else.
(I‘ve been hosting my email myself for about two decades now…)

@chris if you set up DMARC you can prevent them from sending mail pretending to come from your domain

@chris That's interesting, I also just had this exact conclusion with this instance and a quick search showed me that I'm probably not the only one who has this impression.
