Me, feeding 2 people and 2 cats on a 60k EUR salary without benefits (because technically self-employed), reading those comments that claim a 501(c)(3) is some kind of nefarious scheme to hide money šŸ˜

@chriswho @QueenieBeanie @Gargron Itā€™s not a strawman. People donā€™t want him to get paid. They donā€™t donate enough and anytime earning money comes up people scream ā€œcapitalismā€ The world doesnā€™t run on free despite what this place likes to act like. A lot of people that came to fedi are also serial harassers that got kicked off of Big Social

I'm almost tempted to go to Mastodon's GitHub repository and submit a feature request for an instance type allowlist/blocklist. The blocklist would exclude all instances of a certain type (project). The allowlist would only allow such.

I'd explicitly state that the allowlist would make it possible to defederate everything that isn't Mastodon.

I'd really like to see the reactions.

@jupiter_rowland @jrp I donā€™t even think itā€™s them. Itā€™s the early Mastodon users. Those that wanted harm to come to Ryan for daring to bridge Bluesky to Mastodon. Those falsely stating they only consented to Mastodon and ActivityPub, failing to realise thereā€™s 14-17 bridges and protocols that make up the Fediverse.

Can someone tell me why and how they view instances as a ? What makes them communities? I see people upset at empowering individuals/users why is that problematic?

damon,
@damon@social.wedistribute.org avatar

@BeAware I understand that but that doesnā€™t mean that have to be communities. Iā€™m just weary of situations that resemble Big Social but because people can use a different instance and or platform (which is a huge difference) people act as if the behaviour and most of the dynamics arenā€™t similar

damon,
@damon@social.wedistribute.org avatar

@BeAware

Yeah, I often find the ā€œreasoningā€ to be lacking, nonsensical and often hypocritical. People feel fedi is somehow best suited for communities, I donā€™t see how.

A few influencers, active both on the ā€œregularā€ Fediverse and Threads, have noted that having a Threads account hasnā€™t given them a bigger audience even though Threads has a bigger userbase than (for example) Mastodon.

Quite the opposite. Thereā€™s more visibility here. People are more likely to interact with your posts. Itā€™s easier to gain followers as well.

None of this surprises me. Thereā€™s always been two types of people who build content for social media: those who engage with people, and those who game algorithms.

@fediversenews

@atomicpoet

I do believe thereā€™s a need for algorithmic choice in fedi. Not just ā€œalgorithms badā€ ā€œ you are your own algorithmā€ Iā€™m working on a blogpost but in short people like content thatā€™s curated for them. Also, safety. Algorithms are tuned to also avoid a lot of the illegal content.

damon,
@damon@social.wedistribute.org avatar

@atomicpoet Yes, Sora does algorithms very well. Memory will use a similar model but more user driven. I agree with your point about gaming the system bur I believe those people that attempt to do that on fedi would be blocked far and wide. Plus, of thereā€™s algorithmic choice itā€™s not like everyone would come into contact with that persons posts

Imagine writing an open source twitter alternative

One that is federated and built on open protocols

Then having to deal with users who are upset you are working with an established walled garden social platform to support those very open protocols

Girl, you can't have it both ways

We can build better mod/safety tools

But

You can't moderate who gets to participate in an open protocol

Maybe let's focus on the important aspect, better mod/safety tools

@thisismissem @usagi @deadsuperhero @dansup Iā€™d say it is not entirely out of scope and one that would benefit admins/mods and devs. A user needs assessment would be great!

Loops + c2s would be a perfect match, few activitypub implementations support the client to server model.

I can't wait to not be effected AT ALL by whatever Meta decides to do with Threads Federation...

It just won't effect me or the way I use Fedi one bit.

Let them adopt Fedi features and then turn off federation....who cares? It'll be their loss...šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļøI'll federate till they give me a reason not to. And when they do, it won't bother nor effect me in any way.

That's the beauty of Fedi. Them federating or not changes nothing about how I use Fedi.

damon,
@damon@social.wedistribute.org avatar

@BeAware whatā€™s weird is people act like this kind of stuff isnā€™t already being done on fedi

Prainbow, to threads
@Prainbow@mastodon.social avatar

Threads is transphobic. Defederation is choosing peace,diversity, and inclusion.

damon,
@damon@social.wedistribute.org avatar

@Prainbow Thatā€™s not true. Itā€™s only inclusion for mostly white people and those that are left and centre left leaning. Go do research and speak to Black and Brown folk harmed by Mastodon. It wasnā€™t so welcoming and inclusive for them

deadsuperhero, to fediverse

One thing I'd really love to see as a feature for most platforms: auto-boost specific accounts.

It would be great if my general social account automatically shared Pixelfed pictures and PeerTube videos and Funkwhale music and WordPress blog posts automatically.

I know Hubzilla and probably Streams have that. It's a good feature.

damon,
@damon@social.wedistribute.org avatar

@gidi @deadsuperhero itā€™s called auto-boost? Can you demonstrate the function?

beardedtechguy, to fediverse
@beardedtechguy@allthingstech.social avatar

Okay . This whole fiasco with letā€™s just keep the name disclosed, that chooses to kick instances out that choose not to defederated with Threads is getting to me.

So myself and @cliffwade are making a list on our Wiki of instance that both federate and defederate from Threads. We feel people so have the choice themselves and not have someone else choose for them.

Stay tuned to https://wiki.allthingstech.social for the coming list.

damon,
@damon@social.wedistribute.org avatar

@beardedtechguy @cliffwade Absolutely. Itā€™s late and Iā€™m in bed but I can send it tomorrow morning

damon,

damon,
@damon@social.wedistribute.org avatar

@cliffwade @beardedtechguy All set to go. As I mentioned itā€™s not the complete list as it got late and the list is long
