NEW: Food prices in Europe have been soaring. Earlier this year, the Austrian government said it would build a price database to let people compare costs at different supermarkets. It said this would take months to make and only include a small number of product categories.

Within 2 hours, @badlogic had built a first prototype, pulling the data from supermarket's websites, and open sourced the project. Now Heisse Preise lists 177,000 products from 10 chains.

The transparency has allowed prices to be compared: and the results appear to show supermarkets are watching each other and adjusting their prices based on others. The competition authority is investigating and already said new laws should make supermarkets publish proper APIs with full item data

@timbray yeah, my sense of smell three and a half years on is like an old TV -- sometimes the signal is great, sometimes it's full of noise. But otherwise I'm in okay shape so I consider myself lucky.

This is appalling. I trust, although without much hope, that Amazon will fix this.

EDIT: It seems to have been fixed in this particular case, but one does wonder how many other cases there are that haven't been picked up yet.

every time i talk about the problems with mastodon i get people who seem offended that i am still here even if there are problems, and what it feels like is that i am supposed to couch my problems with the site in a compliment sandwich, as if we are all children incapable of receiving critique

@AskPippa I am, or maybe I should say I was. I used to get satisfaction from solving those kinds of problems, but now I figure I've got other things I'd rather be doing with my time and attention.

@AskPippa I'll always appreciate the appliance sales guy who talked me into the cheap dryer years ago because it didn't have a computer board to fail like the expensive dryer did. I learned a lot from that.
