Seeing as it is Proms season over here in the UK, I thought it might be fun to repost some of my classical pieces.

So this weekend I'm starting an 8-bit Lo-Fi Proms, posting inbetween doing other things.

Starting with my @arduino tone version of the fanfare opening for Janacek's Sinfonietta.

Background on the Lo-Fi Orchestra here: https://diyelectromusic.wordpress.com/2020/09/19/introducing-the-arduino-lo-fi-orchestra/

It's International Women's Day and a Friday, so we could do a #FollowFriday!

Do drop me your links to all the amazing women DIY synth makers and musicians you know on the Fediverse! Who am I not following that I should be :)

And here is article from Synth Anatomy from a couple of years back about some of the synth pioneers too:

Its Delia Derbyshire Day!

Go out and listen to this pioneering electronic musician and marvel at the use of tape and effects that ultimately led to her iconic interpretation of the Dr Who theme among other things.

I'm Kevin, diyelectromusic in most places. I do MIDI and microcontroller based making, often reinventing wheels just to learn how it is done and writing it all up on my "Simple DIY Electronic Music Projects" blog trying to link music and STE(A)M: https://diyelectromusic.wordpress.com/

I also have a GitHub and YouTube channel with simple demos (home of the ):

Update: My blog and videos are now on the Fediverse (see profile)!

Maybe one day I can go back as part of one of their new ventures.

Ok electronics folks. What do you think is more likely here - that my arduino EPROM reading code is wired up wrongly or that I have a problem with my DX100 ROM?

Left is the hex dump of v1.1 of the DX100 ROM binary, right is my Arduino dump of my own ROM.

The voice data area starts at 0x4DA0...

I have checked and tested my wiring, but I can't be 100% certain at this stage! And could the timing be out? I need a known good ROM to test with!! :)

I was very kindly given a non-working Yamaha DX100 by @cymplecy

If it proves totally beyond my capabilities then I might stick a Pi in it (it was destined for the recycling centre anyway).

But I've decided to use it as an excuse to learn more about digital electronic systems and see how far I can get working out what is wrong with it.

My initial investigations are here: https://diyelectromusic.wordpress.com/2023/12/31/diagnosing-and-attempting-to-fix-a-yamaha-dx100-part-1/

Short version: It still isn't working, but I'm still working on it :)

That ain't engineering.

diyelectromusic,
@diyelectromusic@mastodon.social avatar

@Faintdreams I must admit it makes me smile... wasn't the whole selling point to get the computers to understand the people, not have the people write specifically for the computers...? We already have a word for the latter - it's called programming :)

Wow - that's a lot of bits (at least for me) :)

Finally going to start soldering up one of my pcbs...

diyelectromusic,
@diyelectromusic@mastodon.social avatar

Ok, so first major ramification of ignorance is forgetting that the ESP32 has Strapping pins - GPIOs that are internally pulled high or low on boot.

I've managed to choose three of them for my genuine analog inputs - whoops!

I think I can work around it, but it does mean that the pulldown resistors in my CV circuit aren't really working properly.

Any thoughts?

This the circuit - so what would an internal ~45K pullup/down add to this - should I just go for a stronger external pull-down?

diyelectromusic, to 3DPrinting
@diyelectromusic@mastodon.social avatar

I want to 3d print some button housings for tactile switches - the simple toggle/push buttons we see everywhere in electronics kits...

I actually eventually want to design something for one of those cheap matrix setups to go in.

So this morning I'm off to see what I can find, but if anyone already has an #OpenSCAD design that they can recommend with a good mechanism and mountings I could use as a starting point, I'd be very interested in hearing about it :)

Part 3 of my experiments with Synth_Dexed on a Raspberry Pi Pico is now up.

TL;DR: It plays over MIDI! I have 10 note polyphony, albeit with a single voice, only on channel 1, and at the somewhat Lo-Fi sample rate of 24000.

But it works!
