The cheque said “AMOUNT: two dollars and forty cents BEING FOR: classified ad”, rounded block letters in green ink amid the printed prompts. My mother never wrote cursive. “Thanks Mum“ I said, “I’ll pay you back from my paper round money on Saturday”

“No need” she said, “I’m going out; if you have the ad ready I’ll post it for you.”

I folded the cheque and the form I’d clipped from the newspaper. It had been tricky writing on the newsprint with a pen “HOME COMPUTER Amstrad CPC6128 with monitor, printer and external 5.25 inch drive. Original software plus over 30 games. $425. Ph 551806”.

After Mum left I went to my room and booted up my new PC, with its Extra Beige system unit and Different Beige monitor. I patted my 6128’s screen sitting on the floor under my desk. “Sorry old girl, no room to keep you but I’ll find you a nice home”.

Before I even got Kings Quest loaded the doorbell rang.

The visitor was a woman with amazing purple hair, and cat ears. “Hi, she said, I’m Kit, here about the Amstrad”

“But…it’s not even posted yet. And I only listed a phone number!”

“Never mind that”, she smiled, bouncing on her toes “do you still have it?”

I nodded, too flabbergasted to speak

“Four twenty five, right?” she said, thrusting an envelope at me, “here’s five hundred, keep the change. Now, what I want-“

“Wait, what are these things”. I’d opened the envelope to find five slippery rectangles of plastic bearing “100” in large letters, coloured variously green and yellow with a transparent region in the middle. “These aren’t-“

“Oh shazbot!” my visitor said, snatching the envelope back. “Bee Arr Bee”. Then she vanished, with an electric ZZZZAAPP sound.

ZZZAAAPP. She was back, holding out a sheaf of five grey paper rectangles, the recently introduced but rarely seen $100 notes, thick linen paper with subtle colours - easy to photocopy and colour in with textas, I’d seen on TV. I held the note up to the sky to see the metal thread and watermark. “Are these real?”

“Trust me,” she said, “they were hard to find but totally legit.”

“Okay, uh do you want to see the computer running?”. I felt like I was running to catch up with this interaction.

“No need” she grinned. “I’m giving it to you. Box it up and stash it in Mum’s roof. You’ll be glad to have it when you’re older.”

“Wh…what?”

“Do they speak english in what?” she muttered half to herself?

“what?”

“Exactly! Right on script”. She poked me in the chest. “You’ll be alright kid. Forget about the ‘strad for a couple of decades, OK?”

She ran hand through her brilliant purple hair, vibrating like she was having the best time ever. “Oh yeah, you’ll need these”. She tugged at her cat ears and i realized they were a headband. She handed me the band with its two ears. “One last thing“—a suddenly serious look—“listen to your dreams. You’ll know when it’s time. See ya!”

ZZZAAPPPP

I spent the $500 but I kept the ears.

you ever do that thing where there's some property or behaviour you're generally aware of but generally just ignore as not being particularly consequential, and then you design something where that property is a limiting factor, so you study it in a lot of detail and then become cursed with the knowledge that you really should be accounting for it pretty much everywhere

LMAO, this is so fucking dumb. I am not even 100% against using tools that might be described as "AI" by the hucksters as part of your creative process, but holy fuck, thinking that typing a few words of description into a machine and having it spit out some milquetoast average of all things that kinda sorta fit your description is "creat[ing] your own music" is just ultimate smoothbrain shit.

Like hitting the DEMO button on a synth and thinking you created that.

Video from my last live set at Iklectik online now: https://youtu.be/1EfWWZHavuI?si=2QSbyFI_MK6x02xE
I included various new devices and builds in the performance, some of which worked better than others.

  • worm gear long-loop percussion
  • new modular synth sound sources (slight bugs)
  • magnetic tape record (minor failure)
  • multiple webcams for projection and documentation
  • strobe light kick drum trigger via rotator cuff (mostly ineffective)

Enjoyed the performance though, great atmosphere in a packed room - nice you can see folks dancing in the video. A great send off to Iklectik's Waterloo space (this was the penultimate event there).

@diyelectromusic Ok, since I stumbled down the rabbit hole, but vactrols concern me on another front, I thought I'd at least document in deference to your excellent efforts: https://poetaster.de/blog/2024-04-21/

the tldr is, works fine when the vactrol is not controlled by PWM from the MCU. Driving the LED with PWM produces a high pitched whine. This can probably be easily solved. But I'm out of time :)

Strange science facts: In nuclear power, functional nuclear fission reactors were constructed as early as 1942, yet nuclear fusion remains elusive and can only be achieved for short periods. In jazz, on the other hand, jazz fusion was invented in the early 70s, and jazz fission remains purely theoretical even today

A tiny breadboard hosts a tiny circuitboard and a headphone jack going to a bluetooth speaker. The circuitboard is powered by a phone battery pack via a small red USB cable. A hand plugs the cable into the battery pack to start the sound playing.

I have heard some “decent” (meaning, believable) AI-generated songs, but most of them are cringe in some way.
And none rise to the level of art, because art is about human emotion and experience. At best, it’s mediocre pablum, a synthesized average meant to mimic what’s “typical” in whatever genre. It’s bland content, even when it could pass as human (content, not art).
It’s sad/funny how “prompt engineers” are sharing it as if it’s something to be proud of, tho.

KydiaMusic,
@KydiaMusic@mastodon.social avatar

@rgarner …but it’s depressing to think that a significant # of ppl only want to consume content rather than connect with other people in our shared humanity.
AI music is devoid of experience, emotion, empathy, and inspiration, and I don’t get why so many people think it’s amazing. Art is more than notes or pigments or words on a page. I don’t feel a connection to a piece of content generated by an algorithm—it’s not inspiring or devastating or transformative. 2/

KydiaMusic,
@KydiaMusic@mastodon.social avatar

@rgarner aw man, I couldn’t read the whole article b/c it wants me to “start my free 7-day trial.”
But, even the songs he linked to as examples of “good” AI music are pretty bad.
Like he said, it will improve, this is the worst it will ever be, etc, but it will still only be content, not art. Making and sharing art is about connecting with others. It’s why we go to live shows with friends, follow our favorite artists online & buy their merch. Idk how much of that will change… 1/

KydiaMusic,
@KydiaMusic@mastodon.social avatar

@rgarner

It doesn’t make me feel like someone else out in the world has gone through what I’ve gone through. It doesn’t allow me to experience something I’ve never experienced before. It lacks vision b/c a computer has no eyes or heart.

It doesn’t inspire me to be a better artist or musician or person any more than a calculator inspires me to improve my math skills. That will never change unless AI becomes self-aware. Even then, how could I feel inspired by something that is programmed? 3/3

I needed an audio probe kind of thing to test other stuff with, so I built this. Nothing really new here, it's essentially just a tweaked datasheet example using common basic concepts, and variations of this circuit can be found all over the place. I figured I'd post this anyway, in case someone else might find it useful.
