How to tell your OSS is ridiculously popular: people aren't 100% sure they didn't embed it, and tack on the software equivalent of "packaged in a facility where peanuts were also present" to the license list.

This watch contains software, so statistically probably contains at least traces of curl.

dolanor,
@dolanor@hachyderm.io avatar

@danderson well, curl sounds a lot like curly.

As someone who's experienced dating and "cues" from a male perspective and from a female one, I recently had some insights to straight(!) dating:

  • Most women tend to behave incredibly friendly towards a man they're interested in and by letting their guard down; also showing interest in the other person, going out of their way in trying to find time together. Generally just being a really decent person to people they like (duh).

  • Many men (including me, back then) don't get really understand what big sign of trust this is and also that this may be a cue.

  • Most men tend to be rather awkward around a woman they find interesting. Silently observing and not knowing what they should do with themselves. In order to find time together they even sometimes poke fun at the person in question... . Sometimes they get drunk to gather the courage and behave even more shitty. Basically they just behave like idiots.

  • Many women either don't understand that those men are just awkward little children or don't care for those man babies (who can blame them).

I've been on the receiving end of both and tbqh, I do like it better the way most women try to approach me. Anyway, that's just my random experience, maybe someone else has had similar observations or different?

dolanor,
@dolanor@hachyderm.io avatar

@ljrk so how do you figure out if a girl is interested in you because you seem nice/interesting/whatever, or they actually feel that you're dating material?

dolanor,
@dolanor@hachyderm.io avatar

@ljrk Alas, without a friend who acted as an intermediate, I wouldn't have gotten married because I'm too slow to act on those cues.
Also the friend was the drunk one ๐Ÿ˜‚

Trying out a bunch of distros again, the overriding feeling I'm having is: wow, nobody learned anything from distri did they, why is all of packaging still so slow, why are projects that treat the OS as a single whole-ass atomic block still take like five minutes of crunching to make fetch happen?

NixOS builds being slow were always an annoyance, and I assumed bailing would be a breath of fresh air... But, really not that much :/

dolanor,
@dolanor@hachyderm.io avatar

@danderson have you read about the distri experimentation?
https://michael.stapelberg.ch/posts/2020-05-16-distri-release/

I haven't by lack of time, neither for nix, but it seemed a nice project.

We don't like the "SSO tax," where vendors treat a basic security feature like a luxury to charge users for. And yet, we found a whiff of it in our own pricing! So we fixed it: https://tailscale.com/blog/sso-tax-cut/?utm_source=Mastodon&utm_medium=owned-social&utm_campaign=devrel-social

Just spent 30mn on an unknown python script.
Haven't touched python in a long while.

30 mn to experiment/discover that os.environ.get('var_name') for a bool takes 'True', 'true', but still will consider the var as string. And a if my_var that is a string with 'true' in it will pass as bool true.

I don't understand how people can be angry about yaml, and are ok with python.

Can I get those 30mn back?

The more I play around with , the more I wish I had a solution to bundle a application into a single executable instead of having to deal with containers and stuff. This would be very handy for the small and mid sized webapps I built from time to time and also for some of the apps we built at work. May be I should spent some time to investigate this.

@oliverandrich are you using django rest framework, or just plain django?

@optissima @GBU_28 don't want to necropost, but just stumbled upon that discussion.

I take the distance in the rule more like game mechanics.

If we take the description of the magic in the FR, I would say distance depends on the density of the threads of the weave, the dead magic area, etc. So not very dependable.

On the wish spell, I could agree though, that you could get more accurate info via this.

The very idea of a "Files app" is high on my list of world-defeating idiocies perpetrated by technology.

dolanor,
@dolanor@hachyderm.io avatar

@robpike The fact that young people these days don't understand how files and folders work when they get a computer compared to a phone/tablet is quite enraging.

And truth be told, they don't understand the Files app either. It's just the thing that got into their hands. They don't understand how it works, they just click until it seems to do what they want.
They could have learned real FS from the start.

The UX got simpler, but it didn't make it better.
