This July, my alma mater, Univ of Illinois, is hosting a five-day workshop on open science and research software engineering

The workshop focuses on helping early-career researchers (e.g, grad students, post-docs) level up from capable programmers to rock stars of accessible, open science

Best of all it's being organized by the brilliant Madicken Munk!

Oh, did I mention... it's free!

Application deadline is June 6th. Spread the word!

is anyone using the @PyConUS group that was created last year to repost all things ? i just refound it by mistake! it still works.

edrogers,
@edrogers@fosstodon.org avatar

@leahawasser @PyConUS It's not still working, unfortunately. The owner of chirp.social chose to bring down the service a few months ago 😞

The best practice for now is to include the hashtag for visibility. (Also, some folks are following the unofficial hashtag instead, so you could include that for bonus visibility)

Almost all bday party invites for my 4 year old specify "No gifts please" or "No gifts necessary" - and I totally get why, I added it to hers as well. Are we moving towards a society that's not so into gifting? Or is this only a thing at certain income levels?

edrogers,
@edrogers@fosstodon.org avatar

@pamelafox Gifts that tend to be bought for a preschool classmate / neighbor just become junk around the home

We've had success suggesting guests give used books only. Even had a big book swap party for all the kids last year. Everybody leaves with something new (to them) 👍

@nedbat Here in , we were very fortunate to have Sydney Runkle, leading contributor to @pydantic, give a talk at our most recent @madpy meetup. It was a great walk-through of how Pydantic works, and brought out a huge audience of people excited to discuss it

I mention it because she's moving to Boston next week 😢 Wisconsin's loss can be 's gain. I highly recommend recruiting her for a talk!

We're in this liminal state where everyone is waiting on MMSD to decide whether or not to open tomorrow because of the extreme cold/wind chill (even though my wife and kids don't work for or go to MMSD, our schools are intertwined with busing), so now I have to make their lunches...

TIL the passageway in theatres is called a “vomitorium” derived from the Latin verb vomō, vomere, to “spew forth”. You can also refer to them collectively as vomotories. So next time I see you at a conference, meet me at the vomitorium 🤮

SciPy 2024 will be in Tacoma, WA this year! 🎉 (I've been told this is no longer privileged information, and can be shared publicly.)

We'll be in the Greater Tacoma Convention Center July 8th-14th. To celebrate the announcement, I made 2 things:

  1. A chirp.social group: @SciPy2024 This is a mastodon bot that will boost any post that mentions it. Follow it for updates
  2. I threw together a small promotional image. I was feeling Art Deco today 😃

I'm finally making a separate page for conferences over at https://fedidevs.com/conferences/

I'm still tweeking the code that aggregates Mastodon posts from the confs, but once that's done I'll start adding 2024 conferences, starting with pycon.it and djangocon.eu (the two that I already have tickets for 😇).

Which other conferences should I add?

edrogers,
@edrogers@fosstodon.org avatar

@anze3db You should add SciPy 2024. SciPy brings together attendees from industry, academia and government to showcase their latest projects, learn from skilled users and developers, and collaborate on code development.

This year, the conference will be held in Tacoma, WA during the second week of July. Online passes will also be available.

More info here: https://www.scipy2024.scipy.org

Folks interested in connecting should be sure to follow our chirp.social group: @SciPy2024

So, I recently gave away my copy of The Manager's Path by @skamille as a gift. (If you're in tech, and in any danger of becoming a people leader, it's an absolute must-read.)

I bought a replacement copy online, but when it arrived, it's clearly not meant to be sold in the US (where I'm located). Should I return and try to buy it again? Report the seller? Just keep it?

The back cover of a sealed copy of "The Manager's Path" by Camille Fournier. A notice limits legal sales to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives, and most of the African Continent.

Do you need help with using Mastodon and the Fediverse? Especially if you're a beginner or unsure about techy things?

You can ask by messaging me or replying to this thread, and I'll try to help or find someone else who can help. Don't worry if a question seems silly or basic!

You can also look things up on the guide at https://fedi.tips, which has an "essentials" section at the top and a complete list of answered questions below that.

edrogers,
@edrogers@fosstodon.org avatar

@feditips Niche question for you: is chirp.social still open to creating new groups?

I really appreciate your guide on groups ( https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse/ ) and used it last summer to create a chirp.social group for a conference I was organizing. I'd like to do it again, but this time, the new group isn't boosting any posts (as far as I can tell).

Here's the group: @scientific_python

Do you see the above group boosting any posts?
Do you know if chirp.social is still creating new groups?

edrogers,
@edrogers@fosstodon.org avatar

@feditips @scientific_python
lol, after 3 weeks of refusing to boost any posts in which it was mentioned, the group finally boosted its first post: my question to you just now! 😅

Here's hoping the issue is resolved and I can use the group for our upcoming conference 🤞

watching a recording of a talk Q&A where the speaker says they never heard of X although X was on their slides & Q&As just deserve to be burned to the ground & the ashes spread to the wind.

absolutely EVERYTHING is stacked against speakers in Q&As.

as a speaker, refuse to participate. even IF you get a worthwhile question, chances are good the acoustics will make sure you’ll answer a different one.

if you have question, go & talk to the speaker after. that’s the point of conferences.

edrogers,
@edrogers@fosstodon.org avatar

@hynek Any time a speaker offers to give a talk, it's a gift. (Even when they're compensated.) But, as the FOSS community is all-too-aware, the dynamics of how strangers receive gifts (and what expectations they may reasonably make of a gift-giver) are fraught

Are Q&As ever worth it? Sometimes speakers are swarmed by a scrum after. For some attendees, Q&As are the stepping stone to public speaking

Regardless, you've convinced me that speakers should have the choice to skip Q&As altogether

I think this is geospatial binary data, but I don't know the format. Try a bunch of things and figure it out

It correctly guessed it was a WKB point and decoded it for me using "from shapely import wkb"

@simon Slightly off-topic, but I'm interested in the choice of wording for your prompt. Specifically, the phrase "Try a bunch of things and figure it out"

A few months ago, the common lore was to use the phrase, "Let's take it step-by-step." Have you found "Try a bunch of things..." to be noticeably better? (Or am I missing the forest for the trees?)
