All you seniors posting about how you survived lead paint, no seatbelts, no helmets etc… I’m very happy for you. Would love to hear sometime from those who didn’t, but for some reason their posts don’t show up on my feed.

I would like to share the track of my recent 4-days tour through Uppland, Sweden. I usually start planning a route with the app BRouter (Android) with the profile "trekking" for finding suitable routes. Next I check the chosen route and might manually improve it by using smaller "no-name" roads. Quite often I also check the pavement of the road by using Google Street View.

This question is kind of a continuation of a discussion last week. @esnyder@MylesRyden asks about what good cycle infrastructure looks like on rural roads.

Q8. As someone living rurally in OR, I am not sure what exactly I want changed on most of the rural roads. I would love to hear more about / see some links to / etc. really good examples of what it could/should look like.

Q6. Does your community have a tool library?

Here’s a great video of a Portland tool library with a focus on bike tools: https://youtu.be/NUbFJjPewh4?si=EaA_YXWsZGj3xcVK

In 2023, word was it would be the last production season of the Surly Big Dummy (non-electric) cargo bike. It's still for sale today. https://surlybikes.com/bikes/big_dummy But they have made some changes that not everyone is happy with, including using a single chain ring up front and removing the mount points for a centerstand like the one that Xtracycle made for it originally.

I think it's a great around-town pick up truck. I wrote a long-term review here: https://mark.stosberg.com/surly-big-dummy-long-term-review/

I started a blog to promote the idea of electric cargo bikes a decade or so ago. At that time, many electric bikes and cargo bikes were still made from kits. The combination was even rarer.

The idea caught on so much that it seems non-electric cargo bikes on their way towards to extinction. It's true that cargo and electric pair very well on a bike.

It's also true the non-electric Surly Big Dummy is joy to ride whether it's around town for a long bike tour.

San Francisco should convert all slip lanes into public plazas with planters, trees, seating, tables, and murals.

Doing this would instantly make streets safer and increase public space for people to gather, connect, and build community.

Slip lanes can be opened to people fast!

This is my ninth year of having goslings here, and I'm still amazed by how big they are at three weeks old. They're fully waterproof (the top layer of fluff gets a bit soggy but the undercoat is now feathers) and safe to leave out with the adults.

You will read stuff about goslings on the internet like "goslings can be taken off heat at 6 weeks old" and WHAT?! Wild geese fly up to the Arctic to breed! Goslings are tough as old boots, and under good grazing conditions they grow like mushrooms.

On the topic of brakes. It's also been my experience that disk brake pads will need to be replaced each year. I can afford it but I can't help but think about regen braking whenever I see the bill. I understand why it isn't really used, but I still wish there were an option.

"The ultimate test to prove what cars have done to the American psyche only requires that you walk out your front door. Take a photo with your phone. Now highlight in red the places in which it would be fully legal for a car to strike and kill you. Now highlight in yellow the places in which a car could strike and kill you and you would have to make a legal case that it was not your fault. Now highlight in green places where you believe you are safe from cars." - Dan Sheehan

Dual-motor ebike report: Temperature of rotors + motor after 1 mile of steep descent.

Bike: R&M Packster 40 cargo e-bike
Total weight: 330 pounds (bike + passenger + rider + cargo)

Braking:
front wheel: 70% regenerative braking / 30% rotor braking
rear wheel: 100% rotor braking

Front rotor: 91F (warm but not too hot)
Motor: 95F (warm but not too hot)

Rear rotor: 211F(!) (don't touch!)

Conclusion: Regenerative braking saves a lot of wear and tear on rotor brakes.

To all the supporters of universal basic income out there, what happened to make you support it even more after you already came to support it?

For me it was learning the many dirty details of traditional welfare benefits and how programs like TANF are designed and treat people, and how many people in need they don't help.

Wild how it took so long to do something so simple. Not that I long to visit the byward Market but Majors Hill or Rideau Falls were rarely on the list of destinations if this was the direction of travel. But this makes basic access possible especially with the bridge open and the new NCC lookout on the +50% complete?? status
