Star Wars never reverses canon so you can take anything the merch says straight to the bank

@robindlaws So, you don't think Disney is going to canonicalize Caddyshack as part of the Star Wars Universe?

I see no way this could possibly go wrong.

@jwz @textfiles That had to be sarcasm. Please?

I guess I'd rather have Biz than Jack involved in this, but I can think of several better options than Biz without really trying.

Anyone wondering what wax worms look like (as they start working into an empty hive), here's a good photo. Your easiest fix -- especially in a small hive--is to freeze the frames, which kills all the eggs and larvae, and hope bees move in quickly! A large, healthy hive will keep out wax moths.

@chris @ai6yr Nature loves things that greedily fill a niche until they cannot possibly survive anymore and thus die out.

The natural world isn't so much about equilibrium, as it is about brutal boom and bust cycles.

If I owned a home, I would be rushing down to get these so I could install them in place of the normal toilets that come with a house

foxxtrot,
@foxxtrot@dice.camp avatar

@MLE_online When we built our house, the Toilets felt like a much more consequential decision than I thought they would because I've always just had toilets and now we had to choose and commit to one.

foxxtrot,
@foxxtrot@dice.camp avatar

@MLE_online I've never used to think so much about fluid dynamics and bowl shape before. And then the question of upgrade options if I want to do bidets later? Just a cascade of questions and choices.

foxxtrot,
@foxxtrot@dice.camp avatar

@MLE_online I like Bidet Seats, but when I was in Spain several years ago, I found the separate Bidet to be intimidating, and didn't want to accommodate separate bidets into our floor plan, but being able to make that choice, especially for unusual features like that is basically the reason to build, though it's not really cost effective to build right now, since the Trades haven't recovered since 2008's crash and everyone has way more work available than they could possibly do.

Biden makes rather typical gaffes for his age but Trump is clearly into dementia territory.

foxxtrot,

@lauren If the media actually ran Trump speeches in full, it would be impossible to claim he was fully present. But it's so nonsensical, they trim it, making him seem more coherent than he is.

Looks like my girls decided to use the warm weather (it was over 50 degrees here today) to clean house.

foxxtrot,
@foxxtrot@dice.camp avatar

@nickdrawthing There is plenty of pee/poop, since they hold it until it's warm enough to do "cleansing flights".

In future, I'm probably going to switch to better insulation, which will help cut down on the number of bees that die, since much of this is probably bees on the outer edge of the "cliuster" they form to keep warm in winter. I've got some insulation, but probably no more than R4 or R5, and I can do better.

They still had plenty of food though, so they've been overwrintering well.

Poor Things is like a much, much more accessible The Lobster. It is almost as good as Everything Everywhere All At Once which is an unbelievable compliment. See it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlbR5N6veqw

A new ad claims that Apple is choosing to allow child abuse to proliferate on their cloud services. I looked into it and found a shadowy network of billionaires who wish to remain anonymous while turning your iPhone into a spyPhone. https://skepchick.org/2024/02/why-billionaires-want-your-iphone-to-spy-on-you/

foxxtrot,

@rebeccawatson Have you ever read David Brin's The Transparent Society? It lays out an interesting set of arguments about the privacy gap between the Rich and the Rest Of Us.

While I have my doubts about some of the thought experiment regarding radical transparency, it is a really interesting read.

People get really, viscerally, pissed off at mid-20th century art and design. The "my kid could do that" school of art criticism.

foxxtrot,
@foxxtrot@dice.camp avatar

@mattblaze As someone who just spent way too much money building a modern take on a mid-20th century home, those people don't really understand how hard good design really is.

foxxtrot,
@foxxtrot@dice.camp avatar

@mattblaze Here are a few angles of our Great Room and a drone shot of the house from the street side. We have done some additional work since we moved in in August (there are stone walls around the deck pilings now, solar panels, etc), but I only have CR2 files of those and am not on a laptop I can easily convert them at the moment.

A mid-century style house photographed at an angle, clad in Douglas Fir siding with a wrap around deck around the forward corner. There is an extension visible behind the house with a roofline that follows the forward line.
A photo of a post and beam great room looking toward the unfurnished dining area. A kitchen can be seen behind a wall on the left side of the frame, opposite of the dining area.

foxxtrot,
@foxxtrot@dice.camp avatar

@mattblaze Since we're in New England, we used the "Deck House" as an inspiration (mid-century style from Acorn-Deck company around here). Our architect happens to live in an actual Deck House, and he absolutely nailed the brief. He's submitted for a few architecture awards, and if he wins, I'm absolutely casting a plaque and attaching it to the house.

My thought on Neuralink implanting tech in human heads for the first time:

Brain implants are one of those technologies where the MTBF for the implant MUST exceed the MTBF of the implantee. And there must be lifetime after-sales support, Or else the execs who made the decision to pull support should go to prison for the rest of their lives.

I see a lot of folks making the argument that yeah, a lot of layoffs are happening, but it's due to irresponsible hiring. And yeah, it's true that you shouldn't hire a bunch of engineers that aren't doing anything; which usually isn't the case.

I think people don't understand just how unbelievably BAD the tech grift is right now for people in leadership positions. It's not just that they hired a lot of people, it's that they also tasked them with working on the wrong things.

foxxtrot,
@foxxtrot@dice.camp avatar

@hbuchel And even when they revert their bad decisions, they will never really do any introspection on their decisions. It's so aggravating.

foxxtrot,
@foxxtrot@dice.camp avatar

@MLE_online Rye can be fickle. Parts take much longer and others take much less time than wheat breads. A properly hydrated rye dough is also much, much stickier and paste-like than you may be used to.

Have fun! It's delicious, even when things don't go ideally.
