@ernie It's not so much that I dislike Docker, it's more that I question the capabilities of any dev team that's only able to make code work if they set up the entire OS.

Kind of sick of the anti-Arab racism I'm seeing from turtleisland.social's admin. Just soft-blocked another user on there for boosting a post from him that depicted an indigenous woman holding up a sign saying "Indigenous against Arab colonialism" who was trying to force her way into a group of protestors and claimed it was "assault" when they physically prevented her from doing so. (She claims there were more violent actions, but mysteriously the only videos show no such thing.)

If you think indigenous people can't be racist or support a colonialist project, you are wrong.

I certainly would not call for a fediblock against an instance dedicated to indigenous people, but at the same time we should not be giving anyone a pass for racism.

@LALegault And an engineering director from Meta was Biden's Director of Technology in the White House from 2021-2022. And another engineering director from there became CTO of the Republican Party.

I guess (new) Silicon Valley has been gradually insinuating itself into DC for a while now. IBM had certainly learned its lesson, then Microsoft. I suspect Google always knew.

Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

I actually have way less of a problem with Jewish and/or Indigenous supremacy (or Black supremacy for that matter) than I do with white supremacy. Because they're not the ones on top.

Jewish Zionists aren't the root cause of what's happening to the Palestinians. The US and UK are.

"What time is it?" is a surprisingly political question for our hypothetical hardware-Internet Communicator to answer! Daylight Savings is just the tip of the iceberg! So how'd we implement it?

For starters I'd offload tracking the relevant global politics to IANA's tzdb project. tzdb primarily consists of datafiles, making it trivial to port to our novel architecture! I'd ship updates the same way as any other OS update (HTTP-cached zips).

As for reading & writing dates...

The problem with restrictions on protest generally is that it's very easy to selectively enforce them. And there is a long history of doing exactly that, not necessarily in Germany but anywhere without a strong recognition of the right to protest. In particular, the authorities always seem to overlook irregularities in "protests" that support whatever it is those in power want.

Public "broadcast" is indeed different from private communications, though e2ee can be applied to arbitrarily large groups. But if anything protecting public speech is MORE important than private speech. Few governments care much if I criticize them to my mom in a Signal message.

In the US, incitement to riot, terrorism, or some other kinds of crime is also illegal, but putting the burden on protestors to make sure the police can understand what they're saying would almost certainly be considered "prior restraint". It's far from a universal concept, but we manage to do all right despite the government not being allowed to pre-censor even public speech.
