Being a mom in the US is dangerous—and wildly expensive:

More new mothers die in the US than in any other rich country. Several times over. The US has a maternal mortality crisis. ...

Giving birth in the US is insanely expensive ...

America remains one of exactly two countries that don’t mandate maternity leave ...

A lack of accessible healthcare

The cost of childcare in America is astounding. ...

@WillRobinson The American Dream has been replaced with the American Nightmare. Gun violence inflicted on children, matricide and more. The US needs to recalibrate it's compass.

    @jeff The answer could be quite simple. "Do people know that a government official tweeted this information?" If the answer is no, then that's when there is no value in staying.

    Twitter is straight up recommending a space hosted by Richard Spencer. I can't remove this. It's stuck at the top of my timeline

    EDIT: I have determined this was because a journalist I was following decided to listen in. (This is a situation where, if you’re reporting, you might want to pull out your secondary.)

    The only thing we currently don't see on is the media, especially local media. But I kinda don't miss the media being entangled in social media so much. It often doesn't bring any extra value to it now that I think of it.

    Seeing the handles like this make me think "oh, they're on Twitter, I wonder what they are doing there" and that's about it. I probably wouldn't follow push-style posts anyway.

    A new generation of clickbait websites populated with content written by AI software is on the way, according to a report released Monday by researchers at NewsGuard, a provider of news and information website ratings.

    @harmonicarichard@techhub.social avatar

    @jpmellojr I feel that this is nothing new. Spam blogs have been around for decades. The challenge is to determine what is spam from what is not spam. People think that AI saves time but it doesn't, when we see how much extra content we have to sift through, to find something worthwhile, let alone written by a human.

    MariaTheMartian, to animals

    Apparently Coco has hunting in her genes.

    She is half poodle. Poodles were originally duck hunting dogs.

    She is half cocker spaniel. Cocker spaniels are used to flush ground birds, like snipe.

    When we go outside, she squares her body off and stretches her neck out long, at attention, primed to bolt.

    When I say GO she bounds across the yard in 4 great big leaps and goes looking for the squirrels who taunt her everyday.

    The hunting instinct is very strong in her.

    I should have named her Artemis. Damn.

    @atomicpoet One of the key flaws of BlueSky is that people follow, without conversing first. It reminds me of Plurk. It's a network where you get your ego stroked by follows, but end up feeling lonely because interactions are rare. I don't want followers, I want conversations.

    Huge news 🥳

    WordPress now has 3,000 ActivityPub plug-in installs.

    Which means that on a per node basis, WordPress’s install base is appr. 25% comparative to the size of Mastodon’s install base.

    If I were to hazard a guess, WordPress is now the 2nd largest Fediverse server software in terms of active nodes.

    In terms of Fediverse server installs, it’s more than possible that WordPress could overtake Mastodon.

    My most used social medias in 2010:

    1. Twitter
    2. Facebook
    3. Foursquare
    4. Bebo
    5. StumbleUpon

    My most used social medias in 2023:

    1. Mastodon
    2. Instagram
    3. Reddit

    In the beginning of 2010 I was registered to over 150 social media sites. The rise of the social media were exciting times. There were rarely any algorithms, no TikTok, no Instagram for Android, no ads on Twitter.

    However, over the years everything went to shit. The social media sites died one by one and couple of the dominating players slowly shifted to platforms where your data was no longer yours, where you were the money machine. The sad thing is, most of the people didn't even notice this change.

    I'm really hopeful about the rise of the open Internet, , etc. We need this.

    harmonicarichard,
    @harmonicarichard@techhub.social avatar

    @rolle I complained and blogged about the change from conversations to hashtags in 2007, as well as about the emerging cult of personality, the idealising of million follower accounts. I was way ahead, with my criticism. I saw the flaws decades before others.

    harmonicarichard,
    @harmonicarichard@techhub.social avatar

    @rolle One of my other comments is that social media forgot about ROI for users. They focused so much on ROI for corporate and PR interests that they forgot that users need a reason to stick around.
