Ego is the matter with us. We are burning it down in the attempt to be the power that can implement solutions.

As far as "our" side goes, more capital isn't a solution, but we think it is. It does solve several problems, just not the big ones.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@maddad RIght? I like it because I know it's studied, and because it's a container for my existential terror. I don't touch news on the subject(s) outside of hitting that. I can be ready for it when I go there, and leave it behind. Sanity simply isn't possible of you carry that around with you all the time.

TBH, I'm not really sure sanity is possible, but I keep chasing it....

The US government is ending the program that provides free COVID vaccines to people who are uninsured and underinsured.

This is a public health failure that will further decrease already low vax rates, and puts marginalized communities at greater risk.

@artemesia @luckytran She got her last at the end of Feb. It says $28.39, all Medicare.

That's not to say the sticker price is the same as what CMS approves, but I'm thinkin' we need to be talking medical prices at least as much as we've needed to be talking about paychecks.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@luckytran I'm sure they calculated the numbers and probabilities of spread. It's hard to believe, but most Americans have medical coverage.

"The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has established a fee schedule for the two-dose vaccines, such as the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, that gives providers $16.94 for the first dose and $28.39 for the second. If any single-dose vaccines are authorized, Medicare will pay providers $28.39 for that shot." https://www.aarp.org/health/conditions-treatments/info-2021/covid-vaccine-costs.html

@KatM @VirginiaMurr @StillIRise1963 I'm not sure people understand that boycotting voting isn't like boycotting a business. The political machine won't shrink for lack of participation. Quite the opposite.

janisf,

@maddad It could be, but it's between having some rights removed and a potential sale of your data to and actual enemy nation. I mean, yeah, a forced pregnancy et al (which can be equivalent to 18+ years of prison, with disfiguring scarring, and more) might actually be worse than dying instantly in a well-targeted nuclear explosion, but there are probably people that would argue with you on your absolute equivalence.

The Supreme Court Rules That Cops Can Steal Your Stuff—as They Always Have
By a 6-3 vote, the conservative justices decided that there is no need for the state to provide a preliminary hearing in civil forfeiture cases.😡

When cops decide to help themselves to your property, they can do it without a warrant, without securing a conviction, without even charging you with a crime. 😡

When the government doesn't obey the law,
Then there is no law.

@Jon_Kramer @maddad

Well, not entirely. You can't just own a gun and make the rules. You have to be more organized and have more better guns.

Let it be said, it's better to be on the side of the people with the more better guns and the organization to back it. There are ways. I encourage people to run for City Council.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@Jon_Kramer @B_Whitewind @maddad Do you know what I say to people who say, "That's just the way it is?"

janisf,

@Jon_Kramer @maddad We can keep spiraling, or we can improve the systems people put in place to join the fight against violence, en masse. There really isn't a middle ground.

I'm committed to non-violence, and thinking of smarter ways to leave a better, safer world for my kid, and all the other kids.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@B_Whitewind @maddad @Jon_Kramer It didn't do anything to mitigate violence, though. The fight I'm fighting is bigger than just letting men keep shooting men and leaving kids in the crossfire.

@cy Some, yes. The world is gradually weaning off of it, despite a distinct lack of suitable psycho-social replacements.

Atheists and agnostics really do need to dream up replacements. Beyond Religi-Burger weddings & funerals, replete with community. Jobs and corporations aren't cutting the muster.

@theotherverion @rimu I'll be sure to tell my 90-year-old mom (who's probably got at least 8 years left), to hurry up and get off her ass.

The knot in the right-wing angle is the belief that the church, the family, or other philanthropy will meet the perpetual need. The harsh reality is that there are and always will be people who don't and won't ever have what it takes to provide "enough value," as defined by people with money, to a free market.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@theotherverion Right, but despite decades of failed and emotionally traumatic attempts at getting him employed, and my mother never having been employed outside the home, now that they're both past retirement age, who's responsible to absorb the cost of their utilities, rent, food, and medical care? Or do we let them rot out in a grassy field somewhere?

I'm not proposing a solution, I'm indicating that employment is frequently not one.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@theotherverion My mom wouldn't have a pension. She was effectively a clergyman's wife full time, who has and is still spending spent quite a bit of time caring for my disabled brother, who hasn't ever been properly "gainfully employed" despite desperate efforts that have now come out in the wash as traumatic, not just to my brother.

The model works for babies, too. The question is: who pays (etc.) the care workers?

Heard on a Reuters piece yesterday, "I don't think I'll vote for Biden since Roe v. Wade was rolled back under him."

ADDED: Too much of the US population doesn't know how the system works. The conservative court system doesn't go away with an Executive administration change. Alito and Thomas rolled back Roe, and the sycophantic Trump appointees fell in line. (Roberts rightfully goes unmentioned.) Obegerfell could easily be next.

Conformity only helps the status quo.

Forcing your children to conform to not-science-backed behavior standards can hurt them.
