My parents took me to Italy on holiday fairly soon after Nutella had been launched. The hotel where we stayed included Nutella in its breakfasts. Oh, the joy of that first taste!

I'm not sure that my mother would have had such fond memories of her children's discovery of Nutella, as for years afterwards we would nag her to get THE REAL THING and not some British supermarket generic knock off.

PRESIDENTIAL FELONIES.

Hmm.... I'm not going to post a song directly about crime or the courts, because they usually are written and performed with a sense of sympathy for the bad boy.

I have not one whit of sympathy for the felon Trump, and indeed am delighted to see that the ordinary Americans on the jury were neither fooled nor intimidated by him. This is a win!

In that spirit, here's my musical selection:

Mariya Takeuchi -- Plastic Love

Looking back at the eighties is more fun than actually living through them was. (Thatcher - Reagan era...ugh)

In that spirit, I present "Plastic Love". Even if you don't follow East Asian pop, one listen will take you back to the eighties - and then perhaps to 2017, when an unofficial remix was uploaded to YouTube, becoming viral, and sparking a revival of interest in the city pop sound.

You might remember the thumbnail that went with that YouTube, which has since been taken down.

In fact, the single was not a huge success in Japan when it was released in 1984, although the album reached number one; it's only in retrospect that the song has achieved its status as a musical icon of the eighties.

Do you remember how we were discussing taste and evaluation a little while ago?

In connection with issues we talked about, this is the kind of story that interests me:

I am not going to make any claim here -about whether about whether I think there are standards of taste that are more than expressions of raw preference; in other words, I'm not going to say whether I believe it makes sense to talk about someone's evaluation being mistaken, as opposed to one that I simply don't share.

Instead, I'm just going to make the observation that the story tells us about lots of pop culture fans who do think mistakes are possible.

I think this points to one aspect of a tension that exists in our attitude towards the products of popular culture.

On the one hand, arguments about rankings, "Best of..." lists, and so on suggest that popular culture consumers really do feel that terms like "good" or "bad" are more than just expressions of raw taste, and that listings like this should not juts be popularity polls.....

I''m one of what seems to be a small minority of Kpop fans in not liking aespa -- Supernova.

This experience brings me back to questions that I consider frequently:

  • Do we really believe that taste is purely subjective, as is so frequently affirmed in pop culture media?

  • Does it make sense to say that one can have defective taste or in some way be mistaken in one's artistic preferences?

jemmesedi,
@jemmesedi@c.im avatar

@zdl

>>So your experience sounds like it's likely universal.<<

I know, but I still find myself questioning my own taste.

You mention generations, and I think that's important in the formation of taste. One of the reasons that I do not like a lot of hiphop is that I did not grow up with it. It's all around my 17 year old son and his contemporaries, so unsurprisingly he loves a lot of it.

The door was opened and tea and sympathy were offered. [...] The Queen promised to look into the request and in due course the deeds were handed over."

In the UK, I would never have dreamed of voting for the Conservatives, and if lived in Canada, I imagine I would support the NDP.

Nevertheless, this piece, written from what seems to be a Canadian Tory perspective, interested me.

My response stems not only from a fascination with Canadian history and identity/identities, but also from a recognition that social democrats like me should consider rather than dismiss out of hand certain Tory understandings of history and culture.

Whitney Mitchell, who was engaged to Foster before his death at the hands of Perry, laid out her feelings about the pardon in a statement sent to the Observer.

“I loved Garrett Foster. I thought we were going to grow old together. He was the love of my life. He still is. I am heartbroken by this lawlessness,“ she said. “With this pardon, the Governor has desecrated the life of a murdered Texan and US Air Force veteran, and impugned [the] jury’s just verdict. He has declared that Texans who hold political views that are different from his—and different from those in power—can be killed in this State with impunity.”
