Bookwarm internet friends, I'm considering getting one of those cocoon hanging chairs to read on the terrasse but I've no idea if it's comfortable to read for some time? Anyone got one of them? Feedback?

Of geek interest: UUIDs have been around for a long time and they work well and interoperate fine, but the specification space is a mess. So the IETF just shipped RFC9562; it has a fine consideration of the history and the trade-offs involved in all the different flavors of UUIDs, and is well-written and I think, as of now, the place to start looking if something UUID-flavored is puzzling you. @spmatich @timbray Reminds me of the time some web devs complained that they can't store a UUID in 32 Bytes due to the dashes, and ended up choosing 16 random Bytes they stored as a hex string.

It led me to conclude that the problem with UUIDs is that they're way too simple and sensible.

The German prefix "ur-" is a time machine. Unfortunately, it only has one setting: to WAY back. A few examples:

alt = old
uralt = very old, ancient

Wald = forest
Urwald = primeval forest, jungle

Zustand = condition
Urzustand = original condition

Großmutter = grandmother
Urgroßmutter = great-grandmother
(here, each added "ur-" will make you jump back one more generation)

Funny: "Uhr" means "clock", so the "Ur-Uhr" would be the first clock ever - if someone finds it.

I've heard takes based on "there has never been a palestinian state", which is a) not really correct. But even so b) it'd only be true if you ignored that the people living there have been a mildly independent kingdom under several empires for around 3000 years that we can reconstruct.

Which shouldn't imply that they have a greater claim to the area than Israelis; that is a very thorny issue because the co-occupation of the same territory is also ancient.

@zdl @The_Tim But it's generally the case that any take on territory is always based on some point in history which "people" declare as the starting point, ignoring everything preceding it.

In this case, it seems to be the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the British Mandate for the area in 1920, sometime after which Israel was established.

Again, not disputing that Israelis deserve their own state.

But also observing that this is literally a colonial project.

@dentangle @kees I had a similar argument once about ring buffers and maintaining the end of it as one past the last element, because it makes things easier (TL;DR), and I only managed to shut the other person up by sending a photo of the appropriate page in the Art of Computer Programming.

I hate appeal to authority, but it can work wonders sometimes.

The odd thing is, as I get older, the things I like and have sentimental value don’t have an all-encompassing touchstone.

Let me give you an example. Almost everyone has heard Nirvana, played Super Mario Bros., and watched The Matrix.

But at some point I diverged from the mainstream. My Nirvana is The Rapture. My Super Mario Bros. is Septerra Core. My Matrix is Turbo Kid.

It is so rare to encounter another human who has heard of these things. And the thing is, I didn’t set out to be niche. It just happened.

I suspect I’m not alone in this phenomena. It’s entirely possible that most of us carry memories of art that mean so much to us but not to many others. And I suspect this is occurring with increasing frequency.
