Did you ever get around to this one? I've dipped back again. Arrakis, Dune, Desert Planet, and the excellent John Rhys-Davies.

A lot of history with this title and the RTS genre and even back on PS1 it was a classic. The original Dune would be the template for C&C, from the same Westwood Studios 💕

@PixelBandits Yeah, which in turn is the remake/port of Dune 2. Makes sense!

yesterday he was on about how he loves his dad more than mom because get this..
“I’m a boy. And daddy is a boy. But you’re a girl”
Then adds in a small voice “but you can join us!”
So as a good parent does😋 I ask him, “do you want me to be boy? Do I have to be boy to join you??”
He insists “but you’re a girl!”

Currently looking up resources cause now I got to have THAT conversation with him

jens,

@farah Ah, yes. It'll be something you'll have to repeat often. Society has a way of teaching kids stuff you have to work hard to erase.

When people tell me they read one of my books and found it “quite good”, I like to assume they’re from the US where “quite” apparently means “very” 😊

As opposed to the UK/Aus, where “quite good” is just damning with faint praise.

Unless you say it was “really quite good”. That’s when you mean “very good”.

If you say “quite good, really”, that means you’re surprised it was any good.

And if you say “Oh, I say, that is quite, quite remarkable”, you’re an 18th-century Earl confronted by a tempestuous highland beauty who is tossing her raven-black locks and flashing her sapphire-blue eyes at you because you’re enclosing her commons 😉

So, to get back onto having fun with programming after some bad experiences with people I decided to do a bit of (skull) to get back into the groove again.

One thing that I really like about nim is just how natural and extremely readable it feels. just being allowed to overload stuff, being able to pretty easily just extend stuff small things like indexing a 2D array with a point or that making a contains functino automatically lets me use the "if point in grid" style syntax is really nice.

The one thing from that I kind of miss is that each struct kind of works like a namespace where you can add your functions that works on that type, it kind of makes the code more ordered, because as I end up doing it in my code, it does become a bit more cluttered since everything is on the top level.

Another really nice thing that I like with nim is that it allows me to use the (oca)ml type function calls, so that I can do "seq.add blah" rather than having to do "seq.add(blah)" it's a small thing, but it's really nice.

@sotolf nim reads well, but I'm less enamoured when writing. It's still reasonable fun!

was wäre euer Rat?

It's so weird how many sci-fi stories will have technology that is hundreds, thousands, even ten thousands of years old and still just works, whereas in real life, it is a challenge to find 30+ year old technology that is still in an operable state

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@schratze Akshumally...

If you ignore consumer tech, and look at for example ships, you'll find they remain in active service for decades, and get replaced mostly for reasons other than "stopped working".

One thing I find weird about Star Wars is in fact that they seem to change ship designs so fast. Between the prequels and original trilogy in particular, things shouldn't have changed so much. The empire may have pushed in a particular direction more aggressively, but realistically the...

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@schratze ... rebels should be re-using so much more from republic times than they do, if only for financial and regulatory reasons. Just look at how F-16s are still in use.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@schratze https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Dynamics_F-16_Fighting_Falcon A 45 year old craft that last year was the world's most common plane of its type.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@hazelnot @schratze Yeah, it does seem weird. They were everywhere in the 80s and 90s media, from Top Gun to flight simulators.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@schratze @hazelnot I agree! The slightly reshaped X-Wings from the newer films make perfect sense to me, for example! But the 20 different variations of TIE-Fighter less so.

The difference between the Fighter, Bomber and Interceptor is reasonably well established, and a newer variation of each seems sensible. But I don't see much of a reason for the huge proliferation.

And don't get me started on imperial shuttles. Yes, the three wings with two folding up is iconic. But shuttles are boring.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@schratze @hazelnot I really don't see how every scene in every film gets a unique design for a boring transport craft for which there is little incentive for innovation. I'm pretty sure the interiors get redesigns every decade or so, and it's fair for a particular villain to order a customized version.

But there are just too many of them.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@schratze @hazelnot I mean... I'm not saying I am right necessarily. It's just something I noticed and found annoying.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@mcv @schratze @hazelnot Yeah, well, if you follow the lore, there are about a handful of shipyards that churn out most of the designs.

I think it's fair to say we're looking at this fictional place too closely 😬

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@mcv @schratze @hazelnot I don't know. https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Shipyard/Legends lists around 30 major ones, with three the main players.

Ina galaxy of hundreds of worlds that seems very little. The wiki page also states that "a shipyard" where ships can be repaired or constructed exists in many places, but we might be talking about something akin to the facilities at Mos Eisley.

Currently porting the TLS clientcert stuff from my old framework to my new site. Together with the (now proven to be time-stable) SHA3 password storage this marks the first time I'm building multi-factor authentication.

And all without annoying one time login tokens coming in through SMS or E-Mail.
