Ah, we're in the time before the next semester begins, drenched in the lovely anticipation of how great it will be.

This time, I will find the magic words to capture each student, and fan the flames of their passion for accomplishment!

They will be invigorated and recognize the vital benefit of striving to do their best!

They will turn their fucking webcams on!

FYI if you use Medium it requires a sign-in to read posts. So I won’t ever read your posts because I don’t want to hand over my info to them.

Also I’m not interested enough to go through a bunch of extra clicks

And if a lot of other people aren’t in the first camp, you can bet a ton of them are in the second

We need to abolish Spring Break.

Hear me out.

People start mentally checking out days before and it takes a week or two after to get back on track.

It is consistently that point in the semester where things go to shit for a high percentage of students. Some of them either barely or never recover.

It doesn't help, it just drags out the semester a week longer. We could be ending a week earlier and getting an extra week before summer semester! It'd be a true break!

The case for AI in is a hotly contested one but I do feel the baby's being tossed out with the bathwater just a tiny bit. Yes, it is bad that AI is being used to phase out hoomans in all sorts of pursuits. And yes, it is also true that at least at the moment, Ai-generated anything is generally lower quality than hooman-generated stuff. And yes, it is also true that we're seeing AI in places we really shouldn't be seeing it (MDN anyone?) and that people, just like always with a new toy, are going absolutely nuts with it and putting it front and center like it's Cthulhu's new miracle to end all toilet paper shortages. But it CAN, at times, actually be an enabler. It CAN, OCCASIONALLY, actually be used for good, and I don't think people who find this out and do this should be villified

jjLitke,
@jjLitke@wandering.shop avatar

@zersiax @Binder It is possible to use AI ethically, but that seems to be more the exception than the rule. Are you using an image generator that is properly paying for images, or one that scrapes and steals them? If someone isn't sure of the answer, they aren't using it ethically. In which case, I'd say they do deserve vilification for contributing to the problem. No amount of "but this is easier for me" makes that okay.

Trump's campaign knows:

A vote for Robert Kennedy is a vote for Trump.
A vote for Cornel West is a vote for Trump.
A vote for Jill Stein is a vote for Trump.
Not voting is a vote for Trump.

A vote for Biden is a vote for democracy.

@Beedge @pixplz Yes, well stated.

I’m glad on an individual level for the people who are privileged enough to make the Middle East their single issue, but I wish they were also concerned about rights in the US, particularly women and LGBTQ.

Folks, this woman had COVID THREE TIMES, and she's "surprised" she had a stroke. What are people not getting? How can we convince them that your carotid artery doesn't just "self-dissect" because you're old, despite being "in great shape (from) running every day?" How did this woman let herself get this deadly disease THREE times? They saved her life, but PLEASE be careful, mask, and stay away from humans. This new strain doesn't show in tests for ~5 days.

jjLitke,
@jjLitke@wandering.shop avatar

@thepoliticalcat @jhavok He just said he was masking at work and got it anyway. Not everyone is so privileged that they can just stop working. Several of my students (college), work service industry job and have had it multiple times. It's not right to act like they're idiots for needing to work to live.

If you don't want to take down holiday decorations yet, I have good news.

If you're a Christian, you should leave them up through the Epiphany on January 6 (the 12th day of Christmas).

If you're not a Christian, you don't need to abide by Christian holiday timelines and can have up any kind of decorations you like for however long you want.

Saw a thing about using LLMs (so-called "AI") for gift ideas. All these things are doing is scraping existing gift guide articles and regurgitating the same tired suggestions.

I have some better, easier ideas for you. So here is a quick thread—the JJ Litke Holiday Gift Guide.
1/

jjLitke,
@jjLitke@wandering.shop avatar

Does your recipient have a hobby? If yes, DO NOT BUY THEM HOBBY-RELATED ITEMS. They already have the most obvious things. They might have way too much of it in fact, a common issue with hobbies. And you won't buy them the things they do want/need for it.

The only exception is if you also have specific hobby knowledge or they told you about a specific need (in which case you don't need a gift guide).
2/

jjLitke,
@jjLitke@wandering.shop avatar

Is your recipient a person who is hard to buy for? There's probably good reason for that. They already have what they want/need. Foisting unneeded "tech gadgets" or other such junk on them is not going to win you big appreciation.

Just get them a consumable gift, some kind of food they like. Extra points to you for considering their dietary needs/preferences. (More about food gifts in a moment.)
3/

jjLitke,
@jjLitke@wandering.shop avatar

Is your recipient a young adult in a tiny apartment? For god's sake, don't buy them stuff (unless they have specifically told you they want/need it).

Again, consumables are the way to go.
4/

jjLitke,
@jjLitke@wandering.shop avatar

Gift cards—ah, the lowest level of gifts in the history of gifts. This might be good for your grown kids or some other certain circumstances. Just don't do this as a fallback because you can't think of anything else. It just doesn't feel meaningful or thoughtful (outside of certain circumstances where it does, you'll know the difference).
5/

jjLitke,
@jjLitke@wandering.shop avatar

About consumable gifts— So. Many. Options. The classic beef and cheese box, those overpriced but delicious pears. Cookies, steaks, salsa. There are subscriptions if you want to go bigger. And if your recipient has any food issues, it's extra lovely and thoughtful on your part to consider that. Trust me on this—my sister has celiac disease, and it's amazing how insensitive people are about it, and how happy she gets when someone does take care about it.
6/

jjLitke,
@jjLitke@wandering.shop avatar

The most important thing to remember is gift giving/receiving is supposed to be enjoyable, not a burden. If it feels very stressful, try thinking through what you're really hoping to get out of it. I found I had unrealistic expectations, and setting my sights on a simpler kind of happiness made a difference.

Hope something in that was helpful to you, and that you get some lovely moments this season!
