Have you or do you know someone/s personally who've come through one infection seemingly fine* but wound up worse off after one or more? I'm asking bc of the normalization pressure to treat it as one-and-done, herd immunity, it's a cold, it's all fine; in contrast to what research shows. Feel free to comment, too.

*Yes I know there are possibly long-term effects not immediately visible; & many ppl are not "fine" after one infection

julia,

@inquiline I'm not fine after one infection, sixteen months of disabling long COVID. Just got the new vax and desperate to avoid a second bout, as unrealistic as that appears to be now.

One thing I hate about my phone and localization is that I get to pick ONE language. That's it. But I'm fluent in both English and Norwegian.

I don't want American apps in shitty translated Norwegian, I want them in native English. At the same time, I don't want my local bank, gym, metro etc showing me their dubious English translations, I want the native Norwegian.

But I can't choose this. I get everything in one language. And it sucks.

julia,

@kly Maybe I dreamed it, but I think the newest Android OS allows users to set language preferences per app? Is that a thing? I would also like it, as a native English speaker trying to learn Norwegian but still using English a lot...
EDIT: Okay it's a thing in the newest OS https://support.google.com/android/answer/12395118?hl=en

Just have to say this one more time: the whole #X thing continues to profoundly upset me. I left in Oct/Nov ‘22 and have been very happy here, but: i had a really good Twitter community of and academics and lost it all, because hardly anyone came here. And i do not understand how they are ALL continuing to use an ever more overtly fascist platform, along with majority. The very people who i thought were the good, critical ones. I know i shd accept it but struggle.

julia,

@Loukas @Ruth_Mottram @pvonhellermannn THIS! Hard same. I can't believe it either and now so many academics are on Bluesky instead of here. I know it's more similar to the Twitter UX but so appalling in terms of privacy.

After some reading I think I have an opinion about the new 5.

I think it's the 3rd greatest electronics product. Most repairable ever. Small EU company, values-based, punching above their weight. Not perfect but transparent and moving forward. But it's expensive and it has Google inside.

2nd is the phone you already have. It has always been more ethical and green to NOT buy a new one.

1st - A refurbished phone running a deGoogled operating system. Cheaper, greener, more free.

julia,

@rafa_font Yes, agree. The phone I have now is the Fairphone 4 and it's fine. Planning to keep it several more years.

Hmm... I think this is tricky, since we are usually invited to review because the article is in our area of specialization, in which we have ostensibly published a good bit. I have included my own work in review suggestions, always with other examples, because that's what's out there on that topic. And in humanities fields, at least where I've worked, citation statistics are not really a huge factor, so there isn't a lot of material gain there anyway.

Thoughts on a show and some real science notes.

I watched the miniseries Last Light -- a look at what would happen to the world if all production were stopped overnight. In this fictional scenario, eco-folks introduced oil-eating bacteria into oil sources.
A mediocre script, nothing special about the cinematography, and a too straightforward approach to the storytelling. But, a lot about it feels real and it maybe a reasonable guess was to what would happen. Societal collapse, mass deaths, panic, lack of transport, chaos and all the rest. It focused on the human experience, not nature's response.

REAL SCIENCE. An interesting tidbit is there really is such as thing as oil-eating bacteria and archaea. Extremophiles. Several varieties, in fact. I once wrote an article about one type. The oil industry has a problem with a type of archaea (primitive bacteria) that sticks to the inside surfaces of pipelines. Colonies of the archaea build up thick layers of slime as they grow there and block the flow of oil. They are anaerobic (don't need oxygen), hang off the pipeline walls with tendrils that hang down and catch sulfur, which they eat.
Some of these oil-eating organisms are being use to help clean up oil spills.

Back on the bird site I followed people who tweeted & blogged about books & who introduced me to great books & authors I wouldn’t otherwise have read. Is there a fediverse equivalent? I’m particularly interested in sci fi & fantasy and in queer, neurodiverse, women & non- western & non-white authors & stories partly as they get less publicity, partly because they educate me but mostly because those I’ve read have been awesome. Thanks

julia,

@bOrgCastAMO Definitely follow hashtags like and similar. Also follow groups; there's a group or two but not sure how active: @sffbipoc @lgbtqbookstodon

Our faculty is offering six PhD positions, with a deadline of 1 Oct. This year applicants must express an interest in one of the faculty's research groups (listed on a linked page). My group is the Environmental Humanities Research Group, FYI. But there are lots of good ones listed.

This is a proper salaried position, with benefits and no non-thesis work or teaching required. Please boost and/or forward to interested folks.

As usual, the press is doing a pretty crappy job of explaining Bluesky amid all the distractions and angles. The single most important aspect of it is the Personal Feeds. They work. They are the complete customizable algorithms anyone can write and publish, or you can write yourself. These will be fantastic tools for the future and we should have had them years ago. And they are nothing we cannot replicate here in Fediverse. In fact, we will have to.

julia,

julia, to academicchatter

That thing when you've been waiting for a submission to get peer reviewed for over a year and the journal has periodically written you to say they are trying but nobody will review it and then you finally get the reviews and they are 1) seemingly responding to a completely different text and/or 2) suggesting you shift the main focus to something you clearly decided to NOT focus on (for obvious reasons).

Now to craft the reply to this nightmare and ask myself again why we didn't just withdraw it and send it elsewhere. But also, to question the usefulness of these reviews and ask myself if they did a single thing to improve the piece. (Uh, yeah, no).

I also realize peer review is a broken system and I myself have declined MANY requests over the past year due to illness as many other folks have since is in fact a mass disabling event and will impact all the free labor we used to do.

But still, had to have a gripe.

Pleased to see the biggest state broadcaster in Germany (ARD) open up its own instance and now an account for the daily news show: @tagesschau ! How about it ??? I see accounts and bots but not instances, so it's unclear if they're official. What gives?

:mastodance::mastodon:

julia,

@MaryPot @tagesschau but it's an official instance: @ard.social

julia,

@MaryPot @tagesschau Maybe I misunderstood the way that works. I know mastodon.social is that. But ard.social belongs to ARD as far as I can tell. So far they only have accounts for the TV news show and regional affiliate stations, I think.
