I disagree with you on some of these points but I'll say that the way you presented them is interesting.

kilroy_was_here,
@kilroy_was_here@dobbs.town avatar

@freemo

I have a flipped view of welfare and UBI, I think there should be a UBI and that welfare programs should be eliminated and their funding directed towards a UBI. Primarily because the administrative bloat of many disparate programs could be greatly reduced with a single program.

I'm not hard-set on any particular conception of a UBI, however I do like the concept of a negative income tax.

kilroy_was_here,
@kilroy_was_here@dobbs.town avatar

@freemo

See, I think a UBI would help more people. Look at what happened during Covid where there was kind of a semi-UBI. Many people broke off and started their own businesses, started doing their own thing.

I want to see an explosion of local business rather than having all our eggs in one big corporate basket. We'd see some actual capitalism happening! Making it so people can try new ideas without going destitute would support this goal and we'd all be on a more solid economic footing.

I have 429 ebooks in Calibre that need organised. I'd really like to NOT have to do it completely by hand. Are there any scripts or programs out there that can take some or all of the work out of the equation?

finally finished uploading my 750 or so ebooks to my e-paper tablet.. The hard part was going through and categorizing all of them. Cool to see though after a full day of constant use it is only at half battery. That includes with the backlight and wifi on.

I've been looking at Onyx Boox for when this Kindle finally gives out, thanks for the endorsement.

And no, I didn't buy the Kindle, somebody I know dropped theirs and messed up the finish and got a free replacement from Amazon. Amazon had them keep the old one and they gave me the old one. Still works fine many years later. I just use it with USB and Calibre, no wifi.

I've really gotta organise my ebooks in Calibre. With 429 of em might be a while though, lol.

I was looking at them for the ability to draw on the ebook too. Just a basic highlight function isn't enough in many cases, especially when it comes to reference material. Or sometimes I want to call something out temporarily with a circle or an arrow, that kind of thing.

Just a reminder, your average factory worker today can buy a pound of butter with only 20 minutes of labor, compared to only 100 years ago and that same amount of food would have taken 3 hours of labor to earn.

@VoxDei @freemo

The average price for a pound of butter in 1975 was $1.025.

The average gross hourly wage for a factory worker in 1975 was $4.81.

4.81/1.025=4.692 lb/hr

60/4.692=12.78 minutes to buy one pound of butter.

Reminds me of these insane backpackers I'd see back in my camping days. They'd try to get rid of every extra tenth of a gram they possibly could. Sawing toothbrushes in half, not using one to begin with, making their first aid kits and other safety equipment deficient. Just absolute craziness.

Meanwhile I always used old, heavy army surplus stuff because it was still cheap as hell back then. I had more fun than the insane backpackers.

Liberating the metal from the statue of a insurrectionist and racist for better purposes seems like a great idea to me. The Washington Post has some excellent photographs of this moment.

This article is a gift. It poses some great questions about how the past and the future are tied together. Probably a good read for people who seem to forget the “Unite the Right” rally.

I'm glad they kept the name of the metal shop secret. My concern was the shop it got chopped up in being turned into a pseudo-holy site or a magnet for conflict.

I was thinking they should've chopped it up, transferred the pieces to a secret ship, and dumped them in the ocean.

It's always interesting to me when I see people talking about how much less engagement they get here vs their history on other places.

And then I look at their account and they hardly follow anyone, and rarely reply except to people who are responding to their posts.

Like, I don't wanna tell anyone how they should do social media... but my own observation is that this place is less a broadcast forum and more of a conversation. And folks don't like one-sided conversations.

    From Wikipedia:

    "The early Spanish or French explorers of the state gave it its name, which is probably a phonetic spelling of the Illinois tribe's name for the Quapaw people, who lived downriver from them."

    So, blame it on the French. Or the Spaniards. Or both!
