My intention is to block any activity from Threads that appears on my timelines here. I will not reconsider this until such a time as it is fully a two-way system where replies from are seen on Threads, not just a way for Zuck to spread Threads gunk one-way beyond his own platforms.

kkeller, (edited )
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@billyjoebowers @lauren tl;dr: Threads is pseudo-one-way federating a very small subset of its users via ActivityPub. The most charitable explanation is a very long beta test before they decide how to federate fully. The least charitable is that they intend on partial federation indefinitely.

@dalfen as someone else mentioned, DOJ did sue Google last year. It wasn't over their phone stack, likely for a few reasons.

  • There are multiple Android hardware vendors, not just Google.
  • Their phone hardware is much more open than Apple's (you can run a third party OS on a Pixel, for example).
  • Their app store is less draconian than Apple's.

There may be other factors I don't know about, like phone-watch interoperability, as well.

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@dalfen I am not a Google fanboi, but I strongly prefer my Pixel phones over an iOS phone. That could just be that I'm a huge nerd and prefer the customizability that the Pixel provides, not just when you have Google's Android on it, but the ease with which I can put a third party OS like LineageOS on it after Google's OS support is EOL. (I have a Pixel 2 running LineageOS 21 with Android 14 well after Google stopped supporting it, which is very usable except for the battery.)

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@dalfen that all being said, I don't really know if DOJ's claims have any merit to them. Me disliking a platform isn't necessarily civil liability! :)

So all the talk about eclipses brings up a very old joke. Traditionally it's an ethnic joke, but those are now prohibited of course. So we'll try make it generic.

At an astrophysical conference, different countries announce where they're going to send their manned space missions. (Note: use of "manned" in this context can indicate a crew of men and/or women. Don't want to upset anyone with the wrong words today.)

Country A says, "We're going to land on Mars!"
Country B says, "We're going to orbit Venus!"
Country C says, "We're going to the sun!"

And the other countries say, "You can't go to the sun, you'll burn up!"

And country C replies, "No we won't -- we're going at night!"

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@lauren I think I learned this one from my grandfather from Country C.

I have yet to see any indication that the TikTok app is any worse in terms of privacy than any of the other major social media apps and a vast number of other apps both in the iOS and Android ecosystems. What we're seeing in Congress now is just protectionist China-bashing. There's lots of legit stuff to be concerned about with China, but these attacks on TikTok and DJI, for example, are political bipartisan grandstanding of a very bad kind, and it's disgusting.

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@Gregnee @lauren if the issue is national security, then the government can ban TikTok on federal networks and devices (and perhaps already have). Banning it for all Americans is a massive overreach.

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@tdietterich @lauren there are, but they are difficult and complicated, which is why Congress would rather take the easy scapegoaty way out.

Tonight on my usual Monday evening national network radio tech segment, I'll be updating about all the evil things being done by AT&T. The mobile outage. Not building fiber they promised to build. Telling people to use landlines in emergencies while trying to kill all the landlines (including now here in California). Stuff like that. I'm just getting started with them.

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@lauren you may need years to go over all the horrible things ATT is doing recently.

lauren, to twitter
@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org avatar

A friend of mine -- who has never before used -- created an account there because they wanted to follow a local emergency agency. They were immediately bombarded with Musk's disgusting Twitter garbage, and contacted me for help in immediately deleting their account -- a procedure that is now essentially hidden and convoluted.

While it's obvious that various agencies continue to use Twitter because no other platforms have similar reach, the situation is still a horrific disgrace.

@ChuckMcManis @lauren the "One Weird Trick" to avoiding that garbage is staying off Twitter entirely.

Discuss: To avoid the hassle of leap years, we should constantly adjust the orbital period of the Earth's solar year to eliminate the 0.2422 fractional days per year.

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@lauren why stop there? If we're changing our orbit, let's make it a nice round number of days, like 400. As an added bonus, the longer orbit will move us farther from the sun, thus reversing global warming!

I spent 5 years writing FAQ pages and "talking people off the ledge" each time there was a collective meltdown.

I stopped doing that because it is never ending.

I keep saying the same things over and over.

In 2021, when people were demanding indictments, I said, "indictments are the start of a long harrowing process."

I explained that trials are harrowing.

Judges make bad decisions.

Juries don't always get it right. A person can be guilty but be acquitted.
