@knbrindle@creativewriting.social

I’m a queer, trans, agender person who has a long-established passion for stories and a recently discovered habit of writing them. I’ve always been drawn to the SF & Fantasy genres, so that’s where my words are leading me.
I prefer to call what I write “fiction centering queer characters” as opposed to “queer fiction.” Their queerness isn’t the point.

I’m not published yet, but hopeful

The part that's most overwhelming for me is the sheer ambivalence of the masses that I have to wade through on the daily just to get another day deeper into the shit. "Where's the outrage?” may seem like a stilted, self-defeating question, except that the context it's uttered in is one where the mainstream politicians that are literally on ballots in my state are campaigning on things like “round up and execute the trans people.”

of Mastodon, I want to (for $) 4 to go on the cover of my blue-collar space-opera WIP.

I've got descriptions for the 3 humans & 1 alien. I'd love to discover what they all really look like.

I'm looking for “realistic stylized painting” like you'd see on an old-fashioned movie poster.

content please; &/or especially welcome. Budget is... not a lot, but will find a way to pay fairly

DM to discuss!

Pls boost for reach!

I LOVE David’s work. Honestly, he'd be my dream collaborator for my covers. I doubt I can afford his work, though 😔

5-8 scientific plausibility?

In my space-opera WIP, I try to strike a balance between plausible, weird, cool, and narratively useful. I avoid deeply detailed technical descriptions, but provide just enough to build a “plausibility scaffolding.” The tech is somewhere between hand-wavy science-magic & hard-science

I also avoid narrating from the POV of characters who are actual experts in what's happening, so the whole thing has a sort of "every-person” level of fluency

Sometimes I think about how being an immigrant anywhere is about hedging your present choices against some unknowable future. To be a cog in a macro environment where you literally control nothing, but any small micro changes outside your control can mean you have to go, tomorrow.

Immigrants with privilege have a better shot, but it still holds. In some cases you have to win the literal lottery (most people have to win a H-1B lottery, to get a U.S. work visa, even if they have a job offer.

knbrindle,
@knbrindle@creativewriting.social avatar

@skinnylatte thanks for this. As an immigrant and naturalized citizen of the US, this all rings very true

It’s also heartbreaking and horrifying that I and my family will likely become immigrants again (and refugees. AGAIN) depending on the outcomes of the next US election cycle.

That’s not hyperbole. Local candidates of one of the two main parties have specifically said that they want to round up and execute people like me. National ones are saying & doing equally vile things

4-16 chapter epigraphs?

I briefly considered writing fabricated quotes out of my lore notes for chapters in my WIP, but quickly realized 2 important things:

  1. If I did, I would have to have one for every chapter

  2. The line between the quotes being a cool touch and evidence of me being smugly clever would be razor thin

    3-12 Do you agree with Ray Bradbury: "Quantity produces quality. If you only write a few things you're doomed"?

    I have no idea what he meant by "doomed”

    Doomed to make little/no money?
    Probably.

    Doomed to write badly?
    Fuck no.

    Doomed to wander the Earth as a restless spirit?
    I'm not much for ghost stories.

    As for writing a lot to learn to write, I'll say this:

    Learning = Doing + Feedback

    If you're not getting feedback, you're just “doing”

    I'm teaching a course and next week is , the idea that if you put something into a text, it should be there for a reason: plot, mood, character, world building, etc.

    In the spirit of @allisonwyss, I'll point out, this is a tool not a rule, but what does this "rule" mean to you? Do you use it, subvert it, deconstruct it?

    knbrindle,
    @knbrindle@creativewriting.social avatar

    @orionkidder @allisonwyss

    This is one of my core principles. Everything that happens in my work is either important, or is laying the groundwork for something important. So if something doesn’t seem important in the moment… it’s going to come back around later or something is going to echo it.

    I believe it makes for a richer reading experience, and helps me construct complications that all gather together and tie up at the end

    When you're selectively actively recommending some content, and selectively not recommending other, and people only get to see recommended content, then yes, it does mean hiding.

    It certainly is a choice. It's a choice to actively participate with the elimination of trans people from society. To actively side with the Christian Nationalist forces attempting to “eradicate" (their word) trans people from existing.

    This is a choice that places Meta firmly in compliance with, and in support of, the White Christian Nationalist (read: American Nazi) agenda

    On another platform someone talked about magic in fantasy always being specific elementals and why aren't there other forms...

    Buddy, I've got plant magic, graffiti magic, musically controlled magic, a guy whose magic power is brewing beer, and a weird fungus that controls peoples' minds through their anger and fears. I also have a character that can magically create the perfect outfit for anyone, because I write the things I want to see in this world 🤭

    knbrindle,
    @knbrindle@creativewriting.social avatar

    @xiane

    I love weird-cool systems of magic

    I have a short story that features a crochet-based magic system ☺️

    Also, I don’t spell this out anywhere (it’s not meant to be a concrete set of rules), but Trauma Magic in PoM can be loosely organized into 6 “facets” (or if you like, elements):

    Energy, Material, Connection, Memory, Reciprocity, & Emotion

    How do you ensure that you don't infringe copyright in your work?

    I used to be terrified that I'd accidentally plagiarize an idea or story - like, I'd remember a story I read a long time ago and think it was my own idea.

    Now that I'm older, I no longer worry about that at all. I don't think that's a thing that happens too often.

    But I do avoid brand names in this obnoxious way. "Social media" not "Facebook" y'know.

    1-25 writers who write outside their gender/sexuality/race etc.?

    A lot of people have posted cogent and complete answers to this that I largely agree with. Authors have to, no question

    There's one consideration, though, that is rattling around in my mind that I need to speak out loud:

    Right now, across the globe & including the US (where I live), transgender & nonbinary people are being murdered & allowed to die thanks to misinformation and invalid stereotyping

    1/x

    knbrindle,
    @knbrindle@creativewriting.social avatar

    Lives are literally at risk here in this "free" country. This all applies to many other minorities, but right now, it's open-season on trans lives & largely socially acceptable in many circles to call for us to be “eradicated" from society. A politician in my state called us "filth”

    When people write trans experiences, especially right now, they are taking people's lives into their hands. That's an enormous responsibility. Think hard about it. Consult your trans friends

    2/x

    knbrindle,
    @knbrindle@creativewriting.social avatar

    If you don't have any trans friends, maybe consider why that is… Because we're more of the population than you may think. Chances are pretty good you know a transgender or gender-diverse person—they may just not trust you enough to be themselves around you

    If you do, get to know them & their lives & their struggles before writing about them. Because lives are on the line

    3/x

    knbrindle,
    @knbrindle@creativewriting.social avatar

    Learn about the bills that are being brought and passed into laws that seek to “eradicate” (their words) and invalidate trans lives

    Yes, inclusion matters. Representation matters

    But right now, what matters even MORE is your voices. Because we need more than representation. We need informed advocacy & people who will raise their voices against this horror

    Representation in your books will not matter much if it's illegal to be who we are. That's coming—soon

    For anyone who has read this far, and still is like: “I don't know what to do or what to say in support... I'm afraid to ask friends I know about their experiences…”

    Ask me

    Seriously. I train agencies how to be more gender-affirming for a living. I will be happy to talk to you about the realities of being trans if it will help you be more confident being vocal about human rights.

    1-15 professional cover art?

    If I go the self-pub route, I plan to commission artwork for my covers. I don't have any real data to show that it will improve sales, but I'll be more comfortable putting my work out with skilled art. I have a graphic design background, and experience in self-publishing technology, so I'll be compositing & typesetting the cover myself, but I know my limits. I cannot paint the covers that I see in my head for my work. I need a real artist for that

    knbrindle,
    @knbrindle@creativewriting.social avatar

    Also, I wish it didn’t need to be said, but it does:

    “AI art” is neither, and we need to be paying real artists for their work!!

    1-13 maps

    I feel like this is a duplicate from a previous month, but YES. Absolutely.

    I love maps & diagrams, both in books I read & making them for what I write. I used Affinity Designer for all of these:

    The maps & floor plan in Paths of Memory provide a backdrop for readers to develop a sense of scale & the shape of the world as Arin travels

    My WIP is set mostly in space, so no maps, but I did draw deck plans & diagrams of the hero ship to aid me in blocking action

The first floor is full of public spaces and luxurious parlors along a central hall, the second floor is arranged around an open gallery to the first floor, with large private rooms. The third floor has small double bedrooms along one side of a narrow hall, and an opening to the roof. Copyright ©2023 K.N. Brindle
