I never thought someone would write a song about Modesto, but the incomparable Pedro the Lion just did.

Since Mangane is unknown to most of you here’s an explainer.

There are three main microblogging flavours of the Fediverse:

  1. Mastodon, Glitch, Hometown, etc.
  2. Misskey, Firefish, Sharkey, etc.
  3. Pleroma, Akkoma, etc.

For atomicpoet.org. I used to use Pleroma but I’ve migrated to Akkoma. The Pleroma/Akkoma flavour is quite unique in that, not only is it perhaps the most resource efficient—it allows you to use different front-ends.

This is where Mangane becomes interesting because it is an incredibly user-friendly and attractive front-end developed by @clovis. And, in fact, I think it provides the most user-friendly and attractive UI/UX on the Fediverse.

Three servers that use Mangane are:

Why am I so enthusiastic about Mangane? Because not only is it good-looking and user-friendly, it provides excellent rendering for text-formatting. And its management of reposts (both regular and quoted) is spectacular.

Anyway, I’ve been testing Mangane for months. I’ve been using it on a live server for two weeks. I’m pleased with the results.

@fediversenews

meg,

@atomicpoet fe.disroot.org has also been using Mangane for some time. It is one of my favorite front-ends too.

Just your friendly reminder: Get off the Internet! (For a while, at least)

@MattCrumpLab Excellent, thanks! I'll give it a go since I practically live in RStudio ;)

DuckDuckGo has been down a lot lately, so I started using Stract for search. So far I like it.

https://stract.com

meg,

@Mehrad

Qwant is good too, but it collects some data and transmits it to Microsoft 👀

Stract uses its own index, so the results are not as robust yet, but the quality seems to be higher. I'll probably use them both in tandem for a while.

Is "remember this device" a myth or does it actually work for some people? I still think 2FA is just another way for companies to get under my skirt, er, into my mobile phone. Otherwise, they'd let me verify by email and not just by device or SMS (which is very insecure, by the way). Guess I need a YubiKey to get around their shenanigans?

meg,

@pootriarch Yeah, that must be my problem as well. I don't want anything storing a persistent cookie or whatever on my machine. And I never stay logged into things, so the daily re-authentications are becoming a real drag. But some sites seem to recognize my browser/device combination and others don't. Maybe it's the VPN, but I still suspect foulplay or incompetence on their part. Perhaps I'll just keep deleting accounts as my new threat model ;)

I haven't watched Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon yet, but activists and academics Melanie Yazzie and Elena Ortiz are on point as usual.

Here is a clip from the latest episode of Red Power Hour where they discuss the disturbing nature of the . It is worth watching in full to prepare yourself or understand better.

Right, I've been away for several years, so what's the best ad blocker for ? Free or paid. Quality and a good business model over quantity.

Ideally on iOS as well?

meg,

@m2m I have been using Orion Browser on my iPad. https://kagi.com/orion

It is far superior to the other blockers and extensions for iOS, which don't catch all the ads and trackers in my experience. (Only Brave worked as well, but I refuse to use that.)

I haven't tried the desktop version yet, but since it is based off Safari/WebKit, it probably integrates well with Mac and iCloud sync. It also uses uBlock and has a bunch of privacy featured built in.

🧵1/3 Tested for you: If I an or people privately, I can no longer interact with them after a short wait, even though I can still see the profile. But I have tried this with and it does NOT work!
Regardless of whether I block the whole domain or just one account (test with Insta-Boss), I can still interact and comment (he probably, too?). So I will have to move to another instance with ▶️ https://fedipact.online/ @Gargron

meg,

@NatureMC You are absolutely correct to be concerned. I can confirm that this behavior is replicated on my instance. As you discovered, this is not a bug but a feature of Mastodon. Even if you reported it on GitHub, it would likely go unanswered like most requests over the years. Eugen does not share the same philosophy as most of the developers in the Fediverse. He has a growth mindset rather than a privacy one. This is his right and I support your decision to leave the large unsafe instances!

"Björk and Rosalía are donating all their rights to income generated by this song to the AEGIS non-profit organisation to combat open pen fish farming in Iceland. Their record companies have agreed to do the same. All funds raised will support legal fees for protesters, taking action to stop the development of intensive farms that harm wildlife, deform fish, and pose risks to salmon's DNA and survival. Immediate action is crucial."

Two things are blowing my mind tonight. The new Beatles' song with George Harrison's ghostly guitar riffs (the darkhorse was always my favorite). And new research suggesting starfish are just a head without a body. Convince me these cool things are unrelated.

Mastodon has been a negative place lately. I understand why. I have resisted every temptation to contribute my thoughts on current affairs. It is complex and many people are hurting. I try to hold space for that.

In times like this, I am reminded of this photo of my pup expressing pure joy at simply running free. We need to aim for this for ourselves and all others.

Critics of economics say it’s unworkable – but from an ecologist’s perspective, it’s inevitable.

Hint: It's more than capitalism and the current climate crisis.

https://theconversation.com/critics-of-degrowth-economics-say-its-unworkable-but-from-an-ecologists-perspective-its-inevitable-211496

meg,

@breadandcircuses @SallyStrange @RD4Anarchy Yes. We could also argue that colonialism is the root of these problems, which I am inclined to do since it is essentially what capitalism was built upon. However, I think it is probably better to reframe this in terms of the capacity for human beings to exploit others and their surroundings to such devastating effect. In other words, we can't let ourselves off the hook if we are to create solutions that do not repeat these atrocities.
