Harvey Elliott is well on my way to becoming my favourite player. His readiness to actually take a shot is part of this.

@mike who does he take the place of?

I hadnโ€™t thought about it, but Iโ€™m not sure I have a favorite now that Bobby is gone.

xG (4.46!) is more than double actual goals. On brand for 2024

Good first half for , finding some success through quick combination passing, especially the triangle on the left with Diaz, Robbo, and Mac Allister.

Wolves were never going to play openly, which is understandable, but makes the game less fun. Expect some caromed goals as a tired 10 men continue to try to pack the box.

Quansah has play it. At first I thought heโ€™d inadvertently poached Salahโ€™s shot. In replay it was a very necessary touch. A great season for the young man.

Mac Allister with a lovely header. Another goal involvement for Elliot, who continues to be red hot. Everything had been down the left, until now. #LFC

Wolves petitioning to remove VAR. VAR removes Semedo. For me, itโ€™s not a red. But the precedent has been set (VAR vs Curtis Jones, 2023)

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@vruz @mlawton Kavanagh and Coote agree. I think there is a spectrum of height and recklessness and this, for me, was reckless but not necessarily to the level of a red. Subjective, I know.

Semedo should have elevated to studs into the the chest. Would have been seen, by precedent, as โ€œa coming togetherโ€. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Finished โ€œJamesโ€ by Percival Everett, a retelling of โ€œThe Adventures of Huckleberry Finnโ€, but instead wholly focused on Jimโ€™s story and point of view.

Although physically enslaved, the autodidact Jim wields an intelligence which pragmatically comprehends the institution which binds him and others, yet rebukes it fully. This review is brilliant captures my thoughts: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/6364739158

5/5 stars.

My unique curse is that the correct answer will always be very last possible word I guess.

In my experience, the answer isnโ€™t static, but slinks about, morphing and transfiguring into any viable possibility until it is absolutely cornered and I pull the damn wriggling mess out into the air, where it solidifies into what everyone else thought obvious on their fourth try or better.

I did 2 miles tonight. Knee isn't worse, so that's good news. Achilles tendon hurts, so I'm going to back off the pace and rebuild my base from scratch very slowly.

No races planned, but I would consider the lookout mountain 20 this December

Friday:
102 seconds of plank
11 minutes of yoga for runners
30 minutes of HIIT
20 minutes of strength training
5.24 km of (17ยฐC, 100% humidity)

Everything up to the run was tough, but fine. The run was best described as suffering in motion. By the time I was done, there was a Humidex of 26ยฐC, and I did not handle it well.

It's mid-May and it's too hot out in the morning. I know this is only going to get worse, short and long term.

Can we please have winter back?

Joel Matip No GIF by Liverpool FC

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@franksting I already greatly miss Matip's loping, probing runs forward and his head slap celebrations.

And I loved the way Van Dijk regards him with such joy. At times gently teasing and other times with honest reverence and brotherhood.

Such a brilliant, yet odd duck. He cannot be replaced.

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@franksting thatโ€™s the second Hansen reference Iโ€™ve heard today. And Iโ€™ve since been lost down a rabbit hole watching highlights of his. He predates my love of the club, as there simply wasnโ€™t a broadcast or recording to he found in the U.S. back then. (And who knows if Iโ€™d have fallen for Liverpool if there had been?)

I can see why people see a similarity. Watching him play a looping pass to himself to break a Man United trap? Unexpected genius! ๐Ÿคฃ

Finished "Translation State" by Ann Leckie, a nominee for Best Science Fiction for Goodreads in 2023.

I came into it without having any knowledge of the Imperial Radch trilogy and it works as a standalone book. It's a bit of a space opera, a bit of a fairly predictable & angsty love story, and a bit of political intrigue. It's kind of a bit of everything and I think that's why I liked it but didn't love it. 4/5 stars.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/62873999-translation-state

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@Nonya_Bidniss I enjoyed Leckie's writing, and I really liked the three main characters. I just thought overall it was a bit messy... a Swiss-army knife when we really just wanted a fork.

I think I'll look at the Ancillary series, as I saw other positive reviews for it when looking at what others thought of Translation State.
