The answer to "how can we make more technology work better and more for everyone" PROBABLY can't hinge on "individual software developers are responsible for knowing internalizing and perfectly executing every single thing in the world and perfectly understanding the needs of billions of people" eh?

I bought this album in 1970 while in high school, for no other reason than I was mezmorized by the cover art, and heard that Miles is hip and I should be listening to him. At the time, I didn't get it and shelved it for years. It took being exposed to much more music to understand what genius is contained on these disks. So much history and influences are amalgamated into this music.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@digginjazz for me this was the album that opened up everything. A friend put it on late at a party when everyone was in a perceptive and receptive mindset and within minutes I realized I knew nothing about music at all

#nba questions tonight

I know it's cheap, simplistic, inaccurate, surface level analysis to say this is on Ant. But if Minnesota wants to win, isn't this still really kinda on Ant?

26 minutes for KAT? I know it was the Naz game but there were a bunch of possessions he should've been in there. Maybe including that last defensive possession. What's up with that rotation?

Speaking of that last defensive possession: what the hell? (also: lol)

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@claude yeah so it was def funny to see him on skates because he's so long, he looked like a baby deer. But the play isn't his fault. Defending a wizard one on one on the perimeter isn't his thing, just as you say. My point is the team shouldn't have hung him out there like that. That's not his job

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@jdm2 sub KAT for Rudy? Where was KAT? To me that's the play

@paris I've spent a ton of time there, though not in years - grew up in the area, still have a friend or two there. It's delightful, but increasingly gentrified, and of course it's an oasis of progressive people in a reactionary Maga desert.

@bourgwick @bookstodon how'd you like Hyperion? One of the supposed "modern classics" I can't quite dig like most SF fans

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@bourgwick @bookstodon well, it's the Canterbury Tales In Space With A Monster, so it's definitely old fashioned! But I know what you mean. Left me cold as well. I assume you know Sterling is on Mastodon?

Dallas looks like they know exactly what they're doing. Minnesota doesn't. Might be all there is to this series really.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@emarktaylor yeah the two teams are really closely matched. But when one closely matched team is executing in the endgame and the other isn't, it's decisive. Wolves can def turn it around but at this point it will take sustained next level excellence from Ant to do it.

I'm not usually a Rudy defender but i feel like it's time for people to let that go. Guarding Luka alone on the perimeter while he dances isn't what he won the award for. No one in the league can do it reliably so 🤷

I'm so unfamiliar w/the Doors' music beyond the obvious songs that I heard "Peace Frog" on FMU recently and it took me a minute to register who it was. Sounded perfectly OK to me, and vaguely contemporary till I caught Morrison's voice. The Doors-haters cult is a strange thing.

mrcompletely, (edited )
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@dmandl it's a classic overrated/underrated backlash thing playing out over time I think. Plus a lot of Music Guys struggle coming to grips with a band whose appeal lies partly if not largely in the hotness and charisma of the male lead singer - Morrison above all from that generation for vibe reasons. I'm not much of a Morrison As An Artist fan, but i get that he really works for a lot of people, and they certainly have their share of perfectly good songs.

There really ought to be an established nomenclature to distinguish among types of instrumental playing.

“Jam” obscures a basic distinction that Phish fans have managed: Type 1 (related to a song) and Type 2 (unrelated to a song).

Dead setlist culture tends to make Type 2/pure improv invisible, esp. in the 1972-1974 period.

For example - 12/31/72: “Truckin’ > The Other One > Morning Dew” is not adequate or helpful.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics yes, it's one of those things that sounds tricky in abstract, and I'm sure I'll find edge cases, but in practice, it's not very hard.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@wharf_rat @4CPcomics I also think it's case that this level of granularity is intuitive and correct for many everyday users. There's also an aspect that's important to me which is to avoid creating deformations in statistics and advanced searching, both of which will happen if we add extra tracks at the macro level. It'll also fuck with the timings project other people are working on. So I think we're likely to keep the existing large grained structure and add detail in a second, optional layer

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics yeah for sure. The last major note is that some jams kinda suck and that's okay. Improv doesn't always work. If they clearly create separation from the preceding song, try to find something new, fail, and give up all in less than a minute or so, that's nothing, setlist wise. If they keep flailing in a unique mode long enough, eventually it becomes something notable, even if it's never worth hearing again. A lot of these are Jerry-less jams fwiw (some of which are great)

Elton John - Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters

From the ceremony for the Gershwin Prize for songwriters that aired on PBS earlier this year. That's Bernie Taupin hanging on the piano. An exquisite performance of Elton's best song (imo, but it is). He debuted this song in 1972 also as a solo performance on the piano, and that's the way it should be played imo. Maybe I posted it before. If so, here it is again. Incredible, I think
