I see the Atlantic is continuing to destroy its brand by allowing terminally delusional NeverTrump Republicans space to entertain their fantasies.

What a disgrace. But unfortunately it's typical for the Atlantic, a magazine specializing in passing off conservative dogma as liberal thought. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/07/biden-2024-reelection-age/674634/

If some people say the is a left-progressive project, it only shows how successful we collectively are to block the Nazis. Loads of far-right instances and users exist in the fediverse. Gab, anyone? But defederation and blocking makes that part invisible to most of us. They still exist and federate amongst themselves. ActivityPub, the protocol, is neutral. We decide what we want and not want. The fediverse is a herd of Venn diagrams, not a closed circle.

msbellows,
@msbellows@c.im avatar

@jwildeboer Agree completely. If someone wants to come into the fediverse and argue for lower taxes, school vouchers, smaller government, or similar (serious but nevertheless legitimate) policies that conservatives used to define themselves by, they would be welcome. People would debate them, Just as we did in the early days of Twitter. It's only assholes who aren't welcome here.

But yeah, Red Delicious apples would work great too. And it's not like they're any good for eating!

    Twitter is threatening legal action against Meta over Threads

    in November, Elon Musk mocked laid off Twitter employees, saying “their immense talent will no doubt be of great use elsewhere”

    well, apparently some went to Meta to build Threads & Musk now has a problem with that

    msbellows,

    @MattBinder Similar employees also went to Bluesky, which began as an internal Twitter project, but Musk's not whining seriously about that.

    I wonder why not.

    @jbe Jesus H. Christ, this is an awful ruling. Trump-appointed judge, of
    course (ie, a Federalist Society handpick).

    I don't see how U.S. democracy can recover from all these fascist body-blows without a Democratic supermajority and a wartime consigliere President willing to support massive numbers of judicial impeachments (including on SCOTUS), reversal of countless bad decisions, bold Congressional preemption of state voting laws, etc. But I don't see how we can win such supermajorites given our congenitally flawed Constitution.

    @ephemeromorph Lots of people talk about how wealth accumulation is bad for everyone else, but few talk about how it is bad for the wealthy themselves.

    My view: excessive wealth is toxic to the humans afflicted with it; generational wealth is even worse; and appropriate taxation and redistribution of excessive wealth provides a vital, sometimes even life-saving, spiritual benefit to the people whose wealth is decreased.
