as we know from portlandia, a decade ago "quirky" gift shops used bird motifs on everything. now, quirky gift shops use mushrooms motifs. to me, this is a sign of the decay of the imperial core. we go from flight/escape to now the notion of waiting out the collapse and then thriving on the decay.

nrchtct,
@nrchtct@vis.social avatar

@janeadams @Birdbassador hmm… interesting! i noticed that the owls seem to get replaced by jellyfish on quirky tote bags, t-shirts, and pillow covers. going from wisdom and observing to entanglements and just going with the flow?

Over the past two summers I had the privilege to co-teach experimental design courses, which not only yielded great projects, but also spawned stimulating discussions and discoveries with our students.

it might not be apparent from the posts here, but was a blast of inspiring presentations and lively conversations! thank you, Uta, Ben and the whole @InfoPlusConf team for making us feel so welcome in Edinburgh!

not sure if i am getting too old for live-posting or if it was the jam-packed program (probably both), but there was a lot of good things to take in: from workshops and presentations to the exhibition and socials…

some recurring themes in my notes:

  • vis co-design is expanding to involve formerly excluded people
  • there is a growing interest in improving the accessibility of vis
  • critical recognition of historically suppressed voices in our data
  • people can (and do) acquire data and vis literacy at many academic stages
  • digital tech is optional: the natural/physical world is full of data
  • sound and speech can complement visualizations
  • there is a growing concern for work-life balance

nrchtct,
@nrchtct@vis.social avatar

@seblammers several talks centered on designing visualizations for people with unique life experiences shaped by their age, abilities, and encounters with marginalization and discrimination. it seems our community is shifting focus from a single user to a plurality of people, all bringing diverse needs to the table.

nrchtct,
@nrchtct@vis.social avatar

@wonderveilleuze @kristinHenry another reason for little activity on here is probably the current state of social media. there was a bit more activity on birdsite, but the alternatives to the fediverse (let's put it this way) do not interoperate and there is no easy way to follow what is being said across platforms. now thinking back to last week, maybe we could have had a registration party (as a social activity). i assume many attendees would feel very welcome here…
