Introducing a new major feature for StreetPass: Hiding profiles!

Now you can hide and unhide profiles in your StreetPass list to keep things organized. If you wanna go full Inbox Zero mode, there's also an option to automatically hide profiles when clicked! (ty @prenagha for the great feature suggestion)

Available on all major browsers ❤️ https://streetpass.social

@tvler So good, thanks for your work!

Do you think cloud sync could be implemented? So that the list of profiles syncs between multiple computers.

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

@tvler Interesting! I'm assuming it would a browser-specific sync?

    TERFs are defending #Substack’s decision to host and monetize literal Nazi content

    It says it all

    o_simardcasanova,
    @o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

    A few of them heckled me on Notes, asking me if, and I quote, I am a "communist”

    First of all, no, I am absolutely not a communist

    Second of all, conflating "I don't want to share a space with Nazis" and "I only hate Nazis because I'm a communist" shows a level of brain rot that perfectly embodies how detached from reality the terminally online far right is

    Are these people even aware that liberal, non-communist democracies fought against the Nazis during WWII?

    Ultimate brain rot

    As noted by @mastodonmigration, there has been a recent increase in discussions about uncivil behavior on the Fediverse. I want to acknowledge that this is indeed a significant problem, and I have previously addressed the issue of reply guys here. In June, I personally experienced a difficult situation when a particular group of individuals decided to gang up on my posts and send harassing comments.

    However, it is crucial to discuss proactive measures that can be taken to reduce hostility.

    First and foremost, if you have a high profile presence, it's essential to moderate. The most effective way to do this is by operating your own server. This grants you the ability to not only block problematic individuals but also block entire servers from interacting with you. I understand that this may require additional effort, which no one enjoys, but trust me, it is well worth it.

    Additionally, utilize view permissions when posting. Not everything needs to be shared on a public timeline. Sometimes, it is better to post content as unlisted or limited to followers-only. This significantly reduces the chances of encountering random people who thrive on being reply guys.

    Furthermore, I firmly believe that using the right Fediverse software is crucial. While Mastodon is excellent, it might not suit everyone's needs. For example, Mastodon lacks comment controls such as locked threads. On the other hand, Lemmy provides this feature.

    Lastly, let's keep in mind that the Fediverse is a diverse community. What might be applicable to Mastodon may not necessarily hold true on other ActivityPub-enabled platforms. If Mastodon isn't working well for you, there is no shame in exploring and trying out other federated software.

    @atomicpoet @mastodonmigration I don’t think "host your instance" is a realistic option

    People with a big presence will prefer to create an account on Threads or Bluesky

    It’s just easier

    o_simardcasanova,
    @o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet @mastodonmigration I’m sorry but I don’t think you’re answering my point

    I wasn’t discussing what should be

    I’m saying that if to join an already complicated federated network, you somehow need to host your own instance, most people with a large audience just won’t bother to come in the first place

    It’s not a matter of "should", but a matter of what can realistically happen

    o_simardcasanova,
    @o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet @mastodonmigration Do you have any evidence that there’s a trend of big accounts cutting off with "corporate" social media to own their identity?

    Despite its growth, the Fediverse only has < 2 million MAU. It’s negligible.

    Also, I know a lot of people who have "big" accounts on social media (myself, I have a 15k account on Twitter). Very few of them have shown an interest in controlling directly their identity. What they want is ease of use, enthusiasm, and reach.

    o_simardcasanova,
    @o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet @mastodonmigration On Mastodon directly, personally I have no interest to build an audience here, at least for my French speaking account

    I’ve been told very explicitly too many times that "people like me" (content creators) aren’t welcome on here, despite my enthusiasm for the platform

    Message well received

    o_simardcasanova,
    @o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet @mastodonmigration I’m sorry but I think you’re still answering outside of my point

    I have never mentioned my personal position here. I’m not defending anything. I’ve been defending open protocols for years now. I run my own business on open protocols as much as possible. I’ve been going against "trends" for years.

    But my personal opinion doesn’t change the facts I’m mentioning

    o_simardcasanova,
    @o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet @mastodonmigration Yes, I know Firefish, and I think it’s a really cool project

    I came to Mastodon long before the Musk situation happened at Twitter. I came here with the exact same goal I came to any platform: to share and to discuss my content (I write scientific popularization content in French) with interested, and interesting, people. Plus, I was keen to help a platform built on an open protocol to grow.

    o_simardcasanova,
    @o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet @mastodonmigration My point is basically that based on my own observations, many, if not most, large accounts will not come to a platform if the entry cost is as high as "you need to host your own instance"

    "Owning your identity" is not a major factor. Reach, ease of use, moderation, pleasantness and ability to monetize are.

    I don’t think the Fediverse, at least in its current state, offers any of those things

    o_simardcasanova,
    @o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet @mastodonmigration Yes, I saw that. And I’m glad these improvements will come.

    But I don’t think the problem is just UI. It’s also the underlying philosophy of AP. Very few people are interested in hosting their nodes. They don’t care, they just want a place to hang out.

    This is where (I think) AT Protocol is a more realistic protocol: it’s not based on a model of many small nodes communicating with each other, but instead on a model of a few big nodes communicating with each other

    o_simardcasanova,
    @o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet @mastodonmigration The AT Proto model is by essence a lot easier to grasp for average users than ActivityPub

    I’m not sure ActivityPub can circumvent this sort of fundamental difficulty

    "Mastodon is great because it gives you tools to curate your own experience without depending on any centralized authority. Also, everyone here needs to follow these 5000 rules I made for what and how they should post."

    o_simardcasanova,
    @o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

    @mattblaze I experienced one of the worst abuse of my life on social media when I said that I have a legitimate use for quote posts

    I even got a strike from my (then) instance that said "if you don’t like Mastodon, you don’t have to stay there" (then followed by a list of posts that broke none of the rules the strike said I had broken)

    Strike got reverted and the admin apologized. But part of my enthusiasm for Mastodon died this day.

    So excited to announce a brand new feature for StreetPass: Custom Profile URLs! Users now have the ability to set a custom URL scheme they want profiles to be opened with.

    This feature is super powerful. Not only can you set it to your home server to easily follow people, you can also set it to 3rd party Mastodon apps... even native ones (🤯)! A few presets include @ivory, @elk, and @IceCubesApp, as well as mastodon.social & mastodon.online

    Try it today at https://streetpass.social 😄

    @chrismessina I’m baffled by the verypoor quality of the media coverage of Threads

    It’s either "Threads is struggling because a completely normal thing is happening" (i.e. a three months old product doesn’t have a retention rate of 100%) or "Threads is struggling, here’s a sample of four anecdotes to prove it"

    Making people pay to tweet should be the nail in the coffin for ; but then again I thought turning it into a glorified Parler would've been that nail already. As they say, the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent.

    o_simardcasanova,
    @o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

    @Gargron It probably is, I have some data that suggests the network externalities of X have already started to unravel

    A platform this big doesn’t collapse overnight. Even if its network externalities unravel catastrophically, it would still take a bit of time (a few months maybe?).

    In my opinion, the data is consistent with what they would be if X were unraveling

    If you have a WordPress-powered blog, you can turn it into a Fediverse server and people will be able to follow the blog from Mastodon etc.

    More info on how to do this here:

    ➡️ https://fedi.tips/wordpress-turning-your-blog-into-a-fediverse-server/

    This works through the AcitvityPub for WordPress plug-in, which has just been updated to version 1.0.0:
