Ozone, 's tool for providing moderation services to the community, is surprisingly "simple" to install.

Not everyone can install it. But all you need is a Docker-enabled server.

By comparison, installing a instance is a lot more complicated.

I'm definitely not a system administrator. But at the end of 2022, I tried to install a instance on a virtual private server.

I was never able to get the instance to work, even if I carefully followed the instructions.

Things may have improved since then though.

It would be funny, and ironic, if in a few years, in order to survive, #Twitter is forced to support #ActivityPub and/or #ATProtocol to federate with #Threads, #Mastodon, and #Bluesky

o_simardcasanova, to mastodon
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

The ratio the good people of Threads is giving to Marco Rubio is so hard that it's probably illegal in several countries.

Whatever the differences between , or , users on all three platforms have the same rejection of the far right and its disgusting nonsense. I love that.

First time I'm seeing a post moderated by a third party labeler in my feed, and it's so cool!

I subscribed to a service that labels screenshots from other platforms.

A post with a Twitter screenshot was flagged in my timeline (first image).

If flagging is not enough, I can go further and decide to completely hide screenshots (second image).

(PS: if you display any antisocial behavior because I posted something about Bluesky, you will get instant-blocked. Same with reply guys.)

The potential of this feature is gigantic.

Also, as people are able to subscribe to any labelers they want, we will have a ton of public data on moderation preferences.

And yet, between a third and a half of the notifications I get out there are spam.

Even if the platform wasn't run by a lunatic far-right imbecile, I would still be unwilling to go back there because of that.

(Reply guys will receive an instant block. Your opinion on what I do on what is left of Twitter is NOT welcome.)

Thank you for your work! FediDB is a great tool.

It may be that this is little more than an extremely unfortunate glitch, but it's really unfortunate timing for . The thing is, companies like Meta don't have a great history with projects.

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

@dansup @hello Hidden replies are notoriously deficient on Threads, they bring a ton of false positive. I’m not surprised it was a glitch.

I’m also glad to learn your relationship with Meta is good! There is a lot of (legitimate) skepticism and caution about them on the Fediverse. It’s important to know they behave as good citizens.

The Threads app user experience, like Instagram, is pretty awful, and pulled in all kinds of different ways I don't care about. That's a major reason why I would never make Threads my main service, and why I love the idea of fediverse interop in its place

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith The app is very buggy, both on mobile and on desktop.

Even basic features are broken: I can’t open link cards on my iPhone, and I’ve been unable to log in on desktop for the past few weeks.

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

FediForum 2024 is almost here! Flipboard CEO @mike catches up with conference co-organizer and Dazzle Labs CEO @J12t to get a taste of top-of-mind topics for fediverse stewards, including how this space can cross the chasm into the mainstream. It’s a new episode of Dot Social, the first podcast about the open social web.

@mike @damon @Flipboard @J12t It’s a great podcast, every episode has been fascinating to listen!

Is there any plan to run an episode, or even several, on some of the issues that are documented within the Fediverse? In particular, the racism that pushed many Black users out of the platform, the reply guy problem (I’m considering stopping publishing on Mastodon because of that), or the many moral panics targeted at projects a vocal, but toxic, minority doesn’t understand?

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

@mike @damon @Flipboard @J12t I’m all on board with the Fediverse and its philosophy. But these problems can severely hamper its growth, hence why I think they need to be discussed and addressed.

Of course, those are just suggestions!

I'm tired of hearing about AI, to be honest. I never cared for it. I don't respect people who use generative AI, and I despise companies that sell out people's data to train it. Yes, people will lose jobs to it, but the world will not be better for it. It's just that consequences are rarely immediately apparent in such complex systems.

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron The phrasing of your post is unacceptable.

You have every right to dislike AI, I genuinely don’t care. I’m not a fan myself, and I also abhor companies that predates on creative people to train their models.

But as the CEO of the Mastodon foundation, you have a responsibility to set the tone in a way that doesn’t legitimize abuse against people.

Please edit your post. And please, get in touch with people familiar with executive communications.
