Now there’s a GE on the way, recommendations for UK politics accounts and politics commentators who actually regularly post here (not just sporadic broadcasting or accounts that have been inactive since 2022) would be fab, if anyone has some. (Don’t worry – I won’t flood feeds with any of this stuff, although I may be a bit giddy on the night of 4 July, unless polling radically shifts before then.)

pasquires,
@pasquires@mastodon.world avatar

@craiggrannell I find most of the Uk political “discussion” is still happening on X rather than here so interested in recommendations as well

    @GossiTheDog there’s a comparative aspect, a level of comfort but underpinning it all is the difference between income and wealth. Earning well does not mean wealth - people have mortgages, loans (student loans are especially bad for this), outgoings. Even high earners can struggle with child care costs.

    Wherever you live, it’s likely that people around have similar houses, similar cars etc

    But then look at actual rich people - it’s a different life.

    pasquires,
    @pasquires@mastodon.world avatar

    @GossiTheDog maybe? I’m not sure the word works.

    There’s some complexity about the trappings of being rich - iPhones are quite egalitarian, is a big TV a sign, or is it gauche?

    I’m lucky in that I can afford to do things that many other people can’t, but then I can’t afford to do things that other people do as well. It’s all about compromise but I don’t think an actual rich person would be having to make those choices.

    Have you ever seen someone link to a Bluesky post?

    Bluesky may have more users than Mastodon, but it seems a lot less relevant. I’ve personally found nothing interesting on there.

    pasquires,
    @pasquires@mastodon.world avatar

    @craiggrannell @lapcatsoftware there are a few people who post more on Bsky that I’d like to follow but going to the effort of opening the app to view them is a bit much. The recommendations seem to be the same few people.

    Hence I barely use it (except yesterday to play around with federation…)

    Frankly I miss Twitter more - most of the politics/journalist stuff is still there.

    Slightly surprised to learn that the East Midlands has a mayor which is apparently voted for only by the people of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire (as best I can tell from the map)

    Why not call it a different name?

    Spent a nice morning not sitting at the defense table listening to opening statements in a criminal trial against me for financial shenanigans involving hush money payments I made to cover up an affair with an adult film star. I have to say that was a good way to not spend the day.

    @cstross I think there’s an element of that, but also seems something more concerning/disconcerting. This is an actual book that one can purchase (for £25 or more). The whole thing seems like a scam.

    Shit!

    If I "buy" some "content" (TV movie/film) on something like Apple TV, I expect to buy it.

    There are a lot of issues with that I know, but for now, Apple TV do seem to treat it that I "own" it and so can play it whenever I like. Good,

    But when re-watching "Continuum" series, and it hits me every time they have (now) censored the word "shit" or similar from the dialogue. I have watched many times. Artificial gap in dialogue!

    What I am watching now is not what I "purchased", FFS.

    OK, is quite good at showing me I have 500 new posts and letting me whiz through them. Previous apps I used seemed to be very bad at that. Clunky or “here is latest”.

    But the “problem”, which is more of a problem I think, is when 50 of those new posts are X boosted this one thing, I’d love to see that as one of the new items with “50 people you follow boosted this” than see the same thing 50 times as I scroll through.

    I'm a cis man but I don't see any issue with using moisturizer. My genitals shouldn't dictate that I don't look after my face.

    But the messaging for men's moisturizer is ridiculous:

    "Gives instant relief!!" - ie: Men should only use moisturizer if they are in the advanced stages of mind numbingly painful leprosy.

    "Ultimate protection!!" - ie: The only reason I'm putting this on is I'm about to enter an inferno to save the beers.
