Re the Rwanda migrant bill, that was passed yesterday in the UK HoL

Natalie Bennett (Baroness Bennett of Manor Castle) in the House of Lords at midnight last night:

My Lords, I rise with a heavy heart, given the lack of further amendment, to this dreadful, international law-busting Bill. I note that in the other place, the SNP twice used procedural Motions to delay it by 15 minutes each time. I applaud them for that, and I am not going to take up the same length, but I am going to take a moment to mark this historic occasion.

Your Lordships’ House has put a lot of work into trying to make the Bill comply with international law, with basic moral laws and with the principles of justice and fairness. The noble Lord, Lord Anderson of Ipswich, earlier today said:

“Its costs will be measured not only in money but in principles debased—disregard for our international commitments, avoiding statutory protections for the vulnerable, and the removal of judicial scrutiny”.
Nothing has changed in the Bill in the last few hours.

I note that Amnesty International this evening warned airline companies that many members of the public take an extremely negative view of the content of the policy. Those were really unnecessary words, because no company of any repute whatsoever is going to take part in implementing this dreadful policy. That is a measure of the Bill and the disgraceful, despicable actions it represents.

I am disappointed to see the almost empty Benches around me. I note that the Liberal Democrat Benches are here, having played their part in trying to stop the Bill at Second Reading, and I commend them for that action that the Green group supported. They are still here to the bitter end.

We heard from the Minister, we will hear tonight, and no doubt will keep hearing in the coming days that “Well, we’re the unelected House”. That does not mean that this House is without moral or legal responsibilities. I have asked the House a number of times: if not now, when? What will it take to make this House say, “Here we take a stand”?

We have had the abomination of the Elections Act, the elements of a policing Act that targeted Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people explicitly. We have had multiple indefensible restrictions on the right to protest. Now, we are letting through an attack on some of the most vulnerable, desperate people on this planet. What more will we let through? I suggest to noble Lords as they leave this Chamber tonight to ask themselves that question.

With a desperate, flailing government party bereft of ideas and philosophy and without principles, this House will keep being tested. I ask these empty Benches: you might be waiting for an election, but what kind of a country will it be if you do not stand up now?

does anyone know why, when I am NOT logged in, my pixelfed.social feed only shows images that were directly uploaded to pixelfed (as opposed to imported from instgram using the json file)? I have about 500 images imported from IG that dont show up in my profile feed if Im not logged in. Weird.

its at https://pixelfed.social/budlea

Before I get to work, a few thoughts on the current big movies and TV series. You may not agree with my PoV.

  1. Oppenheimer was about 1 hr too long. Some good character play but overall very dreary and talky. Gave up about 30mins before the end.
  2. Flower Moon thing was almost too boring to keep watching after about 45 minutes but I kept on for a bit. I gave up and went to bed and didnt bother watching the end. What the hell was it really about? Did I have to do loads of googling to get the plot? Tedious.
  3. Rebel Moon - a pathetic waste of time lost I will never get back. Gave it about 45 minutes.
  4. The Killer was good. Not really good but definitely good. Fassbender is quite compulsive in these loner roles and I enjoyed how the film was put together.
  5. The Creator was overall very enjoyable. A bit long and drawn out but the whole idea and the general production value was excellent.
  6. I have watched earlier series of Succession but stopped as I was sick of watching stories about really horrible people. This also applies to Billions.
  7. I haven't watched Napoleon yet but going on comments I wont bother fttb.
  8. Same as above for Maestro.
  9. I didn't watch Barbie bc (...) Id much rather watch Lee, but haven't been able to find a source to watch it.

I think current movies are overall terrible. There is no story, or if there is, it is so obscured by terrible screenplay that it gets completely lost in supposed nuanced meaningfulness that we the viewers lose all interest. We dont care about the characters. Quite a lot of TV series on the other hand tend to be very good, if you choose what interests you. This is the opposite of what may have been true a decade ago.

@danjac I think we get script by committee (filled with yes people), there's far less visionary people in the industry maybe, and a lot more nepotism.

penworks,
@penworks@lor.sh avatar

@danjac this makes total sense. Superhero movies are completely generic now, no real message or any character development beyond the basics. Cut and paste storylines. Maybe the re aimed at 10 yo's.

penworks,
@penworks@lor.sh avatar

@danjac you sound a lot more familiar with this genre. Maybe bc I dont know all that I got the feeling it was really vague and just for action and bright lights.

Those older Batman and Xmen movies, I feel were overall were a much more serious set of ideas. But it kind of lost it some time ago imo

@danjac thats a really interesting and astute comment. Im in that latter grouping for sure. So Ive lost interest in most of these movies (eg Rebel Moon was terrible imo), even though I was and am part of the market for superhero/fantasy action. Ive tried various TV series but I think they are pretty much very light. I did like Andor a lot, that felt really different. I liked Rogue One for example, its very watchable. I dont think this is about budget or about CGI tricks, its very much about characters, the charisma of lesser known actors - which I think add a lot to new movies/series - and about the basic premise of the script.

Born on this day. Otto Dix, 2 December 1891, one of the most important painters of Expressionism and New Objectivity in Germany during and after the Weimar Republic.

The question to ask is, if he was around today would he be happy for his work to be used in genart training sets? Would he be using DALLE 3? If he was a musician, would he put his tracks on Spotify? Do you think his searing scorched earth anti war anti corruption anti fascism messages would go across well on those platforms? Do you think he'd tweet some of his paintings? Would he have a big following on Instagram?

Does the communication medium impact the quality of the message? Do we trivialise everything through the extractive capitalism of our digital platforms?

hey id like you to solve the issue of dense housing and being able to play my music and movies at super loud volume. it's really the best perk of living in a house.

just a suggestion of an area that needs some work and attention. thanks.

@wagesj45 well, do what we rock band folks do. Hire a rehearsal room. Other than that, you kind of have to respect your neighbours I reckon. I cant run my Rokits 6s at full blast playing deep house or Tool but then I also dont have to listen to terrible 1970s show tunes or eurotechno from the other people living in the block. Works both ways ;)
