MAGIP and TNGIC in 2024

I just came off two conferences with one being in Montana and one being in Tennessee. Both Geo related. It was my first time attending the MAGIP conference. Not that you need a long overly drawn out review of both - here are some of the highlights: TNGIC was fun. It was a different approach this year focused on people more than "the usual conference thing".

Interesting read... I haven't been in contact with the esri side of the world for a very long time now and I'm completely out of touch. In Mexico nobody will ever migrate to pro unless it can be cracked... And I don't even know if that's a thing nowadays.

I also don't know if resistance to change can motivate people to change to foss4g or learn new stuff.

@rnanclares@fosstodon.org avatar

@defuneste @sgillies @rjhale1971 They only know what they have been taught... Same in Mexico.

The "industry" has changed over the last 10 years, at least here in Mexico, but some of the universities are still stuck in ESRI world, and they aren't even aware of the disservice they're doing to their students.

The main factor driving migration to foss is budget cuts and price hikes, and the local ESRI partner and their incompetence.

I have to write something about the Mexican foss4g revolution

The more I play 10th edition, the more I think the game system is disappointing. I just find the « rule stacking » that is encouraged in this edition to be illegible when fighting your opponent.

Each unit has a special rule, their attached characters have special rules on top, your army and detachment add extra rules, and stratagems give even more variance.

Sad to read this stuff I stopped playing w40k a long time ago for different reasons, but this ia the same stuff that made me stop playing Blood Bowl, freaking rerolls and stupid mechanics. I started playing BB when I was a kid, I remember it was a french edition all made of cardboard.

    @ojala I'd recommend the Firefox plugin "Multi-Account Containers" thus you won't need to use different browsers.

    In @fedora 39, Parquet support for @gdal is not compiled in, and I see that it won’t be in 40 either (build logs: https://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org//packages/gdal/3.8.4/2.fc40/data/logs/x86_64/build.log)
    That means no GeoParquet support in the rpm version of @qgis for example.
    I’ve got no idea where to go in order to ask for it or help make it happen, any hint ? 🙏

    You can try the conda-forge version and see if it supports parquet.

    Everyone said get a Brother printer so I bought a 3-in-1 scanner and printer. There seems to be something wrong with it though. I plugged it into a Linux laptop, opened a document, pressed print, selected the printer, and it printed. Then I opened simple-scan, pressed scan, and it scanned.

    This isn't how printers and scanners are supposed to work. Where do I install the drivers that don't work properly etc? This was no fun. I demand a refund.

    @rnanclares@fosstodon.org avatar

    @JoeRess
    Try connecting it to your network, it works! Now you can scan your documents directly to your laptop without needing a freaking usb!!! It's magic!!!1!!

    These were a wee bit overpriced at the farmer's market 😬 (passiflora grow like weeds, and it also takes a LOT of them to make juice or anything).

    So I got up a running with on 40 (beta) with NVIDIA drivers installed from RPM Fusion in like 15 minutes, yesterday. It's just amazing. I expected at least some issues, but only noticed an issue when playing YouTube videos fullscreen in Firefox and its probably something more related to missing codecs and not plasma itself. Congrats to all the KDE team for an incredible release.

    Nothing better than to paint a bunch of minis after finishing a video!

    I do hate myself for painting my Custodes as the Solar Watch instead of just spray painting them gold and calling it a day. Hitting all these small details and arabesques on their armor with very liquid gold paint is pretty nerve racking.

    @rnanclares@fosstodon.org avatar

    @thelinuxEXP
    You can cheat and use a gold ink fine point pen on the arabesques.

    R terra is like freaking black magic. Just rasterized 1496388 line features (extracted from OSM) in less than 14 seconds 🤯 The size of the reference raster 14177x14674, the whole state of Jalisco (80k km²) at a pixel size of 30 meters. Actually this is rasterizing AND writing the output geotiff with deflate compression.

    We're glad to see more of Valve's dedication to Linux as Counter Strike 2 kept CS:GO's native Linux support from day 1 of its release.

    Have you tried it? How does it run on Fedora?

    rnanclares, (edited )
    @rnanclares@fosstodon.org avatar

    @fedora
    The performance is pretty bad compared to win11, stuck around 100 fps while the win version runs almost at triple fps (with the same settings). It also stutters. I've been playing on F39 (beta) since the CS2 release but the performance hasn't improved, I will keep testing it.

He thought "omfg what do I do now" ... Fired up the terminal and ran htop.... His boss was very pleased 🤣😎 :kali_linux: :kali_linux_g: :kali_linux_r:
