holy shit. they actually called it "reply guy". seeing the Torment Nexus and copying it for profit is one thing, but seeing a reply guy and being like "I can monetize that" is a whole new type of evil.

yessss, the concept of closed-gardens being dying malls is spreading. I'm pretty sure I'm the first to make this comparison (about 4 years ago), but I'm so happy to see others taking the idea (or interdependently conceiving it, it's not like it's some profound thing) and running with it.

we should stop using the term "self host". It encourages making services that are only used individually. Not everyone can host their own services, and those capable of hosting should figure out ways to share services with others.

    Other options might be:

    • community host
    • mutual host
    • affinity host
    • friendly host
    • neighbor host
    • peer host

Been using this since this morning and it does what it says on the tin. If you click a link that goes to a reddit thread you get the wayback page. Super helpful to find information I need when searching, but gives no traffic to reddit. So, as communities relocate the historical knowledge will still be accessible.

Recently, the WHO released a statement along the lines of "sugur free sweetener are bad for your health".

The research that was done does not say that. The communications goal was reported to warn against people who drink water, that switching to sweetener alternatives has no health benefits, and long term effects are unknown, so it's safer to not drink them".

However, that isn't really well communicated through the WHO's short statement and how media is reporting it.

If you drink a lot of sugary drinks, then artificial sweetener seems to be better than that. Switching to plain old water of course is also good. The benefit seems about the same. And drinking water long term is known to have benefits over drinking sugary drinks.

The studies DO NOT say that artificial sweeteners are bad for your health, poisoning you, causing diseases, or anything like that. So, if you are like me and occasionally drinking artificial sweeteners to replace sugary drinks then you are fine, but water is still the gold standard.

getting really tired of the response to bigots, where they film some clip of queer people acting non-puritanical in some way, by liberals being that queers need to "think of the optics".

    1. bigots will make "the optics" negative no matter what happens, including just lying

    2. optics policing to ensure that queers are remanded to only puritanical public expression is just as bad as what the bigots are doing

sometimes I think about how different the fediverse would be if we, from the start, invested in allow-list federation models and had supplementary services that helped facilitate discovery of other instances to allow.

The push from the right to make US muslims an adversary of the queer community is BS. It is trying to stoke anti-lgbtq hate and islamaphobia with a one-two punch.

If people try to push this crap just remind them that US muslims are more accepting of queer people than US white evangelicals.

Portland, now is a good time to get fans or window ACs before the shelves go bare.

I was able to get a fan from a mutual aid group a couple years back. I asked and got about 5 offers for good fans.

After today the 10-day forcast is all in the 80s and 90s.

It's hard to convey how much I despise ads.

I watched Twitch a bit when it was my friends who had no ads on their streams. Also, ad block worked pretty well there. Then one day it stopped working and after a single ad I completely stopped interacting with the site for like a year.

Recently, someone got me a "gift sub" to a streamer and I went back to watching them for a bit. The first time it showed me an ad again I instantly closed the tab, and I haven't opened it again since.

If we needed any more proof that consumer rebellion is a dead end, after the outcry around Netflix blocking account sharing the change resulted in ... nearly 6 million new paying Netflix subscribers.

When Gary Bowser was put in prison for making Switch mod chips people swore at Nintendo, but no one stopped buying their games (including me).

Fighting capitalism through consumer buying power will never work.

    grumble grumble

a year ago I said that using an ad blocker was one of the most important and first steps a person can do to protect themselves on technology these days.

I then got a people telling me that was ridiculous and it was bad that I dared to suggest such a thing.

since then, CISA and the NSA have suggested that people use ad blockers to protect themselves online.

who are these people still defending using the internet without basic security that blocks entities trying to gather your PII and trick you into clicking malware links?

sometimes, I do actually know what I'm talking about.

    end grumbling
