This allegedly compostable fork went into the compost bin with a typical kitchen bin full of veggie trimmings and coffee grounds. It really looks like one could wash it and re-use it, no sign of deterioration. I will give it a second chance to compost, because as I was digging out from the bottom, there were also quite a few eggshells that didn't really break down either, must have been a pocket of preservation.
Weโre on the look for a new family car and Iโve been pleasantly impressed with the BMW X5/X6. 2023 models have nice climate controls: physical switches and a little screen showing mode, degrees, etc
Then I drove the new 2024 model. And got this absolute mess:
Carmakers, please stop using screens instead of buttons. This is not an upgrade.
Since leaving Twitter, I've been trying to figure out what my journalism-y socials look like. (Threads: A sad Potemkin village where I just share articles. Bluesky: A fun, bitchy hotel cafeteria that still seems ill-suited to news.) I've been trying to use Mastodon for more hard news stuff, but I'm having a hard time getting my feed to be both active and relevant.
So I'm trying a few experiments to see if I can rejig my good. If you've got good journalism follow suggestions, send em my way.
@justinling I personally havenโt found my favorite hard news sources have really embraced their mastodon side. I seriously started using deadbird site during the arab spring, and had quite a firehose of good, fast, sources. One thing I did during the 2015-2016 campaign โseasonโ was to follow some of the non-news instigators โฆ and found theyโd often reference journalists doing the hard work, so I could then follow that journo.
Okay, honest question, why do people call funny posts shitposting? I think we should call news about Elon, Republicans, Fascism, Shootings ect, Shitposts, because they are actually shitty, and posts that make me laugh need a different name, because why is enjoyment shitty? What kind of world is it that we are shamed for enjoyment?
COVID took so much from so many. It's breaking my heart how many families lost what little generational wealth they had. Lets help this family keep some of theirs...
Any email power users in the house? Anybody happen to know off the top of their heads any #email clients for Android that work well for dealing with drafting and receiving plain text emails? Gmail does not seem to allow plain text emails at all on Android, I checked out a couple others and they didn't seem to support it either, and this doesn't seem to be a searchable feature, so rather than brute force the Play Store I thought I would ask.
Edit: Whoa, rarely have recommendations been so unanimous, so prompt, and so correct. Thanks for all the recs for FairEmail, it does indeed seem awesome! So I think I'm all set now, but of course if anybody has any other recommendations for awesome email clients for Android, feel free to chime in!
@siderea I've been using K9 for a while. I'm all plain-test email everywhere-as-much-as-possible, and don't use google outside of as required at work.
My one quibble with K9 is lack of save-draft button while working on a missive.
@ben For every one of these โreligious exemptionโ arguments against childhood vaccinations - I really want a โFreedom from religious pandering exemptionโ for all women who want an abortion and control of their own body.
You know what scares me? If I had a button that would absolutely guarantee that Donald Trump would be imprisoned, abortion made legal nationwide , and Fox News exiled to Siberia, only one in four Americans would push it.
@shoq You sure it's only 1 in 4? If such a button existed, and folks could use it in private, I bet it would be closer to 3 in 4... because for some who would like to, their fear of violent reprisals probably masks their wish to be willing to participate.
Many years ago, almost more than I want to admit, I was on the phone with a very angry person.
I worked in a CSR role, handling customer complaints about various products. It was a terrible job that paid exceptionally well and allowed me to utilize my people skills.
I have a few personal quirks. Some of them are useful, some of them are less than useful. One of the more useful quirks is my confidence in self.
I'm not afraid of you, I'm very difficult to intimidate.
One day, a police officer was on my phone. He had a problem with his purchase and he felt compelled to abuse someone about it.
I explained that the policy was against him and he wouldn't be able to move forward. He complained and threatened to file a lawsuit. I politely explained that his original threat of a lawsuit is what prompted my call and that I wanted to make sure he understood the situation.
He did not. He persisted in threatening to sue me personally, sue the company I worked for, just really make his point. So he could properly sue me, he explained that he needed and was legally authorized to know my full name and physical address. (Remember how I said he was a police man?)
I chuckled slightly at his overreach and calmly explained that would literally never happen. To be fair, I shouldn't have chuckled. It was slight, it wasn't cruel... but it was wrong.
He then threatened my safety and my life. He used language that made it clear he was unwilling to reaction rationally and I froze his accounts with the legal warnings and forwarded him to the security team.
A few months later, I was informed they had pursued charges against him. My audio recordings were being used to protect others from people like him.
Whenever I see threats like the one Donald Trump made against the #DOJ -- I think about those months.
This is a very dangerous and unserious person. He should not be allowed to walk free with public access to resources if this is how he spends his time.
Mastodon is wild, y'all really got white folks on this site calling Black and Indigenous people colonizers, yet wonder why this place can't keep Black folks.
