Research shows it is possible to reward users for sharing accurate information instead of misinformation:

https://theconversation.com/social-media-can-in-fact-be-made-better-research-shows-it-is-possible-to-reward-users-for-sharing-accurate-information-instead-of-misinformation-209676/

It's foundationally a good concept to reward users for sharing high quality, accurate information. The problem is that it's somewhat idealistic. Who decides what is accurate and high quality and what isn't? Therein lies the issue.

shrikant,
@shrikant@noc.social avatar

@TiffyBelle The problem, IMHO, is that any 'did you hear' conversation that is even in 'lame gossip' territory does a LOT better than any 'did you hear' conversation in the 'generic good news' territory.

"Did you hear about Jack and Jill?" "No! Tell me more!"

"Did you hear about X good deed Jack did." "Oh? That's nice..."

If it bleeds, it sadly leads...

Railway Cop Sent For Mental Health Check Over Killings: "No Communal Angle"

Chetan Singh, 33, killed his senior and shot dead three more passengers on the Jaipur-Mumbai Central superfast express. He was arrested while trying to escape.

@indianewswatch No communal angle???

What?

Did they watch the video that has been making the rounds of social media? Did they bother to listen to the audio at all?

It may be a mental health issue. But bigotry is a mental health issue.

Chetan Kumar Choudhary murdered his boss (A Meena) and 3 Muslims.
This is an inter caste and inter religious murder

Just because you donโ€™t get caste doesnโ€™t mean others donโ€™t

@Calamur If he had mental health issues, why was he allowed to carry and wield a LIVE FIREARM?? This is a brazen attempt to sweep the whole thing under a rug.

His little 'speech' recorded after the incident makes it amply clear that there was deep-seated hate behind the crime.

And if they are calling his hate a mental-health issue, then perhaps it's time that we evaluate EVERYONE in the police and armed forces for mental health issues...

The official line is "He lost his cool and shot at whoever he saw in front of him."

There are clear videos on the birds*ite of him spewing hate-speech about Muslims. Very few news outlets seem to be covering that bit.

Lemme see if I can find a nitter link...

Sorry I kind of enjoy the rapid decay of or #X or it's called tomorrow but it feels like we finally get to see centralized (social media) is not the way for the future

We still have a long way to go but that's okay, we take it slowly and make sure everything works correctly before shipping stuff and that's a feature also :mastogrin:

I'm happy to see so many people work so hard for this all and not because they are getting paid but because they love thisโค๏ธ Me included!

shrikant,
@shrikant@noc.social avatar

@stux The news of Twitter's death is greatly exaggerated.

Platform inertia is a hell of a drug.

Facebook continues to exist despite it falling of a cliff in terms of utility and usefulness. Twitter will also continue to exist as a way for advertisers to dump their advertising dollars.

Elon achieved his objective - stripped a thriving global village filled with great communities bare and converted it into a tourist town filled with racist grandpas and overpriced knick-knacks.

๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธhive mind: Are there time budget trackers out there?

I.e., I want to spend x hours reading, y hours on project a, z hours on supervision this week. Every day, I task switch according to energy, but track whether I overshoot my hour budget for a given task type or project, in which case I stop and switch again.

Suggestions?

shrikant,
@shrikant@noc.social avatar

@codingconduct Do you want them automated or manual entry?

Like do you want the app to automatically track based on the app you use on your phone and desktop/laptop? Or are you okay with manually entering start and end times each time you do a task?

If it is the latter, try any of the thousand time-tracking apps. I use clockify to track my work-hours but you can use it for practically anything.

Not many cross-platform options for the former, sadly...

    @AAKL @TheConversationUK A My hypothesis is that the Gartner Hype Cycle is seeing shorter durations with each leap/advance in technology.

    Part of the reason for this is also self-wrought, tbh.

    Each new iteration of/advancement in tech forced our attention spans to become shorter and shorter because that was the currency they operated in. Shorter the attention span, more the revenue they could squeeze.

    Except, now they are having to compete with this devil that they created themselves. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

    @ben@werd.social avatar

    I donโ€™t know that itโ€™s fair to count AI startups as media startups. Given the (justified) labor disputes going on right now, Iโ€™d offer that theyโ€™re closer to anti-media, and Iโ€™m not sure that Iโ€™d think of them as a bright spot. Thereโ€™s plenty of room for AI to assist creatives, but of course the real money is in replacing them or devaluing their work. https://news.crunchbase.com/media-entertainment/media-startups-vc-funding-ai/?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

    shrikant,
    @shrikant@noc.social avatar

    @ben I don't know how much more creative work can get devalued. (Although, I get the feeling I shouldn't ask that question because it might jinx the whole thing even further.)

    Writers have already been working in content-sweatshops for a while. And now, with LLMs, they are experiencing what handicraft artisans felt when factories began cropping up.

    All content produced by AI is headed in the SAME direction - a bland average of all creativity.

    shrikant,
    @shrikant@noc.social avatar

    @ben What? No! But you must!

    How else will the bots get their daily dose of training material that will enable them to replace us eventually?!

    @ArneBab Yup, that's why I called it the holy grail. Because finding a discovery mechanism that is all three - secure, private, and easy - is THE holy grail.

    It is a trilemma that has stumped engineers since the advent of networking and I don't expect it to be solved any time soon, honestly. But, we march one step at a time... :)

    @ArneBab Okay, first of all, holy wow!! This is impressive! ๐Ÿคฏ

    And second, the app is clean and seems to work well. The admin interface of the server has a ton of options that will probably scare off beginners.

    I sincerely feel the UX will have to take the approach - bundle everything urgent into a wizard and keep the process largely one-click. The Android app does that with the single button but the server interface also needs to do that, somehow...

    @mastodonindians @glynmoody

    @ArneBab I haven't yet run the desktop version. Been a bit tied up with some work stuff and was hoping to tackle this over the weekend. But that screenshot looks perfect in terms of its content - pretty much what I was describing.

    Hate to say this but the 'design' needs a bit more work but that will also happen with time and involvement of more people in the project, for sure!

    Found an XSS on a fairly big site.
    The people running it didn't respond to my contact requests.
    Found the developer and told them.
    They fixed it. I asked if there was a bug bounty and got this charming reply.

    I wasn't expecting riches, but a "thank you" would have been nice!

    shrikant,
    @shrikant@noc.social avatar

    @Edent I think there might a miscommunication of expectations here.

    I read the message as you asking the dev if they (as in the dev not the company) would offer a bug bounty. And the dev responded 'Oh, I absolutely cannot because I would possibly be violating a company policy if I did that.'

    Again, this is just my interpretation and the truth might be something else entirely... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

    All in all, an undeservedly poor outcome for you, whatever the case...

    shrikant,
    @shrikant@noc.social avatar

    @Edent Oh, my bad. I thought the messages in the screenshot were exchanged with the dev on a non-company comms channel... Sorry! :)
