My wish for Mastodon is sharable lists and list portability. @Gargron

shrikant,
@shrikant@noc.social avatar

@phillycodehound Oh, YES. Yes please. Please, @Gargron?

I mean, I don't know how complicated this is to actually make happen and I hope I don't come across as an a**hole, but this would be a superb addition to the platform!

@ArneBab Ah, that is indeed a very well-detailed post. Will set it up tonight on a VM and test it out.

As for propagating it further, well, I hope either the creators figure out the holy grail soon viz., a way to enable quick, secure, and private discovery. Or that my fellow countrymen find some reason to sign up to it en masse... 🤞

Comparing my list to followers/following here to what it looked like on , I don't see a lot of people from , or that region of the world, here on ? This is a bit surprising to me. I can't remember having seen any discussions on this either, so I'd be interested to hear why people think that is, or even better, that I'm wrong!

shrikant,
@shrikant@noc.social avatar

@anderseknert Because there aren't many of us on here. Most clout-chasing Indians seem to have chosen to stick to Twitter. Or move to Threads.

You might want to check the hashtag and the group @mastodonindians to check out some good accounts to follow... :)

shrikant,
@shrikant@noc.social avatar

@anderseknert Yeah, true! Well, glad to have met you here! I'll keep an eye out for Indian accounts in and recommend any that I happen to come across.

Hopefully, @mastodonindians also boosts these toots and they will reach a wider audience soon. :)

Paywalls are not it - for the news business or for society. I personally think there’s a lot of mileage to be gained from patronage models, which have worked very well for both non-profit and commercial newsrooms - if their journalism really does provide a strong public service.

Here's a deep cut related to the entertainment industry:

If two writers are listed in the credits with their names connected by an ampersand, it means they wrote the script as a team. But if two writers names are connected by the word “and,” it means they worked on the script separately.

"Smith & Jones" has a different meaning from "Smith and Jones."

https://www.wga.org/the-guild/about-us/faq#credits4

shrikant,
@shrikant@noc.social avatar

@grammargirl Interesting, because the Indian film industry chose the hyphen instead of the ampersand. Any popular duos - writers, composers, directors - are all joined by a hyphen. And first names only.

It took me an embarrassingly long time after I heard their names to realise that Salim-Javed, Nadeem-Shravan, and Abbas-Mustan were SIX people, not three... :)

jace, to fediverse
@jace@mstdn.ca avatar

It is endlessly fascinating to me that the selling point for Threads is "Celebs & brands are joining in".
To most, I guess that sounds exciting.
But to me, and I assume most of you in the , this just says "People who want to sell stuff and people who want to tell you to buy stuff are here."

And that's just not an attractive proposition at all. 🤷‍♂️

shrikant,
@shrikant@noc.social avatar

@jace Most of social media is basically a HUGE gossip machine for fawning fans, so I'm honestly not surprised that everyone swarmed to Threads.

Add to that, we live in a consumption economy. That means when you tell someone 'there are people who want to sell you stuff', they will hear it as 'there are people who will be your personal genies".

Now, that makes it an attractive proposition for a LOT of people... 🤷‍♂️

Poll: If goes ahead with its plan to add , will you follow one or more Threads users in your Mastodon account?

shrikant,
@shrikant@noc.social avatar

@ricmac The assertiveness of both options might be skewing the polls but, a lot of the stalwarts in my industry ( ) might be on Threads because that's where all their followers migrated after Twitter. Since I don't want to install that horrible app, I might have to follow their threads account.

But, my instinct says Meta will not federate Threads. Or will federate it with some bizzare conditions.

I'm just a girl, standing in front of the entire infosec community, asking them to give practical, simple digital security/privacy advice to people seeking abortions instead of describing outlandish Jason Bourne scenarios.

shrikant,
@shrikant@noc.social avatar

@evacide The slow erosion of personal privacy over the years has led to a point where a 'simple digital security/privacy advice' that doesn't involve stuff like Tor and Tails and such doesn't exist, sadly.

Maybe an E2EE messenger app (a la Signal) to automatically and anonymously connects 'seekers' to 'helpers'? Servers outside US. Still need to solve the non-trivial problem of trust vs anonymity.

Basically a digital version of the current underground, if such a thing even exists?

Good morning followers

This week I am hoping that my Northern Irish border poll post is ready to be posted.

I am also hoping to make progress with my post on Orkney and the UK's variable geometry, and also on other posts.

My blogposts can be done either quickly or very slowly, as rabbit-holes should be either ignored or explored fully.

I spent part of last week building up an early Threads presence, so that I have a channel for promoting my work there.

But at heart I prefer Mastodon.

shrikant,
@shrikant@noc.social avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 @davidallengreen Not installing a Meta app unless I ABSOLUTELY need to. And even then, I might set it up on a separate phone or VM, sandboxed from everything else...

I shudder to think of what Zuck is doing with that firehose of data that is being fed to the Meta server farms.

Not on FB, not on Insta, use WA only because contacts have inertia. Trying to stay away from Threads as much as possible.

I shall be one of the last ones to fall to Zuck's supremacy, I guess. 🤷‍♂️

shrikant,
@shrikant@noc.social avatar

@electropict @ChrisMayLA6 @davidallengreen WA = WhatsApp, now almost the defacto calling and messaging service in my country, thanks to cheap data.

I don't want Meta/Zuck supremacy either but I am preparing for it, like one would prepare for an apocalypse.

Life without social media has made me an outcast in my circles. I am now seen as the digital equivalent of a weird hippie who lives off-the-grid and occasionally trundles into town for supplies.

Not complaining, just stating facts... :P

Fellow , what are your favourite Podcasts? Specially made in or about India?

My two favorites:

  1. The seen and the unseen
  2. Puliyabazi

I also like 3 things by the Indian Express. But they're just news bites.

Suggest me some! The topics can be anything.

@shibaprasad @mastodonindians Do you want India-focused podcasts? Or Indians doing India-focused podcasts? Or will any podcasts by Indians do?

If it is the last one, may I offer up the podcast @ngkabra and I make? It's called "Future IQ" and it is primarily on YouTube but we also post an audio-only version.

Does anyone else have BT headphones where the right earbud keeps getting quiet. It's not the headsets, bc it's happened on multiple earbuds.

I'm using a Samsung Note 20 5G

shrikant,
@shrikant@noc.social avatar

@phillycodehound Happens to me with my left earbud. AKG earbuds. I usually attribute it to a bad battery. Or a glitch in the Bluetooth pairing because sometimes resetting the pairing seems to bring them back online.

(I say sometimes because the left earbud loses sound again a few uses later.)

No idea what is happening there...
